OT: tigers

Submitted by Rodriguesqe on

Anyone still following the season? The season looks like its on the brink of collapse and we're not even 1/4 of the way through. I was hoping they would be worth watching till the all star break but I don't think we'll get that this year.

Abyssmal pitching, an offense that should be awesome but isn't clicking. Sloppy, uninsipired efforts.

I don't blame Ausmus entirely but I think its clear he is a below average strategist and doesn't have the personality this team needs. Hate to say it but letting Leyland have his last year and not hiring Francona looks like it will haunt the Tigers for a long time.

I know he's a hockey guy so I know the Wings will be in good hands. Stevie Y will be hired back one day and it will be hockeytown again.

Sanchez and Pelfreybare wasted starts every time through the rotation. Offensively there have to be concerns about all the scuffling given everyone's healthy. Castellani has finally learned some patience at the plate, and it's paying huge dividends. But every time they go through a stretch like this week, the one recurring thought is Ausmus is just not up to the task. His in-game strategy has not improved much, and it's apparent he simply cannot motivate them with his beachy personality. McClendon or Gardenhire might be able to eke out a winning season, but unless Norris lights the world on fire when he comes back, this team is t-o-a-s-t.

They are 3 games out of a wild card spot with 132 games left. Bullpen has been good accept for a couple of blow-ups. Way too early to panic.

and lets be candid, these are ugly, ugly losses.  crushing, obliterating, beaten-like-a-drum losses.

love the tigers, but it's time to re-tool.  a lot.

EDIT:  they just did it again.  up 4-1, they get reeled in, then lose it in the bottom of the 9th with a walk-off homer to the nats.  so glad i wasn't watching.   7 in a row.  break up the tigers.

I fully stand by your assesment. Talk to me in a month or two about how good they are. In 2002, the Angels started 6-14 and ended 99-63 with a wolrd series win. saying we're a sinking ship and that everyone in the clubhouse needs to be fired is premature. every year a team gets hot and does better than the begining of the season indicated. maybe thats us, maybe it isnt. I agree that the team hasnt looked good recently but i wouldnt chalk it up to anything more than a slump.

Why isn't anyone complaining about Avilla who signed Pelfrey to a horrible deal? Upton is struggling and Lowe got killed today. I'm not am Ausmus apologist but Avilla should be on the hot seat as well after this season. Unless he fires Ausmus, makes some kind of genius hire, and the Tigers win a playoff series.

was an unbelievably stupid deal.  i said so at the time; not a hindsight observation.  word has it the new analytics staff recommended him.  i don't know what kind of analytics they were looking at, but i don't give a crap about his FIP, BABIP or anything else.  i saw a guy who hasn't pitched well since 2010.  and he had tommy john surgery since then.

worse yet, they are stuck with him for another year at 8 million.  a huge head scratcher.

meanwhile, a much better and cheaper gamble could have been made on rich hill (former wolverine).  he resurrected his nasty curve in the minors last year then  tore it up in boston in september.  he signed a one year deal with OAK for 6 million.  that would have been the perfect deal for the tigers.  a one year contract to buy some time for the 4 young starters.  and he has been very good thus far in 2016 (and beat the tigers).

pelfrey will likely be released by the all star game.  what a waste.  i would pissed if i were illich.

They have to get rid of Ausmus. Not only is he a clueless coach, but the players are also not playing for him.

Clueless coach? Coaching is teaching the game. He knows the game. As far as managing - I agree he is failing. Too many judgement calls blow up in his face and the players seem far too indifferent to losing. The team lacks fire. I felt the same when Leyland was here. We had 1 year (06) when we seemed to play with a lot of passion. Since then it seems like the Tigers have a country club mentality.

like they would a grizzled old baseball guy like Leyland.

Seeing Hartbaugh and his EUTM for baseball, does anyone else think he could step in and have the Tigers performing better than Ausmus? I've been thinking this since last season.

They aren't that talented and the coaching hasn't helped.  I mean, it's an older team with a number of holes at the bottom of the lineup and spotty starting pitching.  The bullpen has shockingly been okay save the last couple of games, but it's a team that finished last in its division and didn't make dramatic improvements.  My guess is Ausmus is gone sooner rather than later and they try with someone else, but at this point the window has closed and I'd rather they look for new talent than try to drag this out.

where are these holes?  gose?  that's one guy.  iglesias is a legit .280+ hitter.  and don't write off mcann after 25 ABs.  and salty has been huge.

a few guys are underperforming right now, but the back of their baseball card says better days are ahead for them, if they stay healthy.

the starting pitching, though, is another story.

I can't follow the team very closely because I live out of state. But god they love the Royals here (KC obviously). Also my friend played poker with VMart last night until like 3:30 am so whatever that means. Idk if he plays every day now (been a few years). Then again I guess baseball players probably have a later sleep schedule since they start work later in the day...

Ausmus doesn't seem to be doing anything. A N Y T H I N G. He is a handsome son of a gun though, but that doesn't do diddly squat on the field. The Tigers are without direction. There doesn't seem to be cohesiveness on the field. It's not a team. It's a bunch of guys playing for the Tigers and that's the managers fault.

Leyland still to blame. Lol. I told my friends we were in the modern glory years with Leyland and they pissed and moaned every year. Itll take a decade to prove itself out but its true. All the Leyland bashing while we were at our pinnacle was just crazy.

This is Mike Illitch back in the 90s when he hired Scotty Bowman:

"I took a look at hockey history and at sports history," Ilitch told the AP at the time. "Something dawned on me. There seems to be a pattern. People who win continuously win. The same people win, over and over. So when I was looking for a coach, I went looking for somebody who has won, who knows how to win." Why not apply that to the manager position with the Tigers?
