OT: Thoughts on Lions/NFL Draft

Submitted by Chicken22 on

Overall I'm happy with the draft, but would have liked to see another linebacker and a corner. Maybe Scooby Wright III in the 7th instead of the RB.

Also would've liked to see Burbridge instead of the LS, when we already have a Pro-bowl LS who signed an extension over the offseason.

In this draft, Quinn focused on needs more than best player available.

Also open to thoughts on the entire NFL Draft

I think Ruddock is a smart pick. Nothing fancy, but he gets it done on the field and I would rather see that than fancy interceptions and fancy missed passes. I think Ruddock will end up being a ball control and very solid, meat and potatoes QB.

I thought Decker was a slight reach at a position of need. continues our streak of average Big Ten NFL OTs. Liked Robinson, great value in a draft with a lot of defensive talent. Glasgow pick was OK. to be seen if he is better than Swanson. provides depth and competition if nothing else. Love the Killibrew pick. After the 4th a bunch of meh picks. Dahl is limited athletically and physically and played in a pass only offense. Zettel might be Swancutt 2.0. Rudock doesn't come with much upside. a longsnapper? but they are all day three picks so I'm not losing sleep. really hoped to get Howard in the 5th but Bears snapped him up pick before ours.

I really think they needed a WR instead of a LS today, but everything else was solid. Jesus, though, if Tate or Jones misses any significant PT this year, it'll be another long season.

...the long snapper and the guard. I think the OLB was a bit of a reach as well - it just appears that no one knows much about him.

I cannot get my head around why the LS was drafted when Muhlbach was just resigned. The Patriots evidently valued LS very highly - they drafted their current with their 5th round pick last year. However, why not draft one next year instead of use a roster spot on 2? If our advanced scouting is so good that they saw Landes as the best LS in 2 years, then kudos. If not, then this is puzzling.

We must've *really* liked Dahl to draft him after we drafted Glasgow. Seems to be more of a depth pick - a luxury that I'm not sure we had, exactly.

Overall, I liked the rest of the draft. We get enamored with college stats - was thinking about Scooby Wright in the late rounds as well - but pro teams need to draft for specific skills. The RB is 6'2" and runs a 4.5.

I liked Robinson and Zettel the most, considering where we got everyone. I know some think Rudock was a reach, but I'd want him as a backup on any team for his eyes and brain, if not his arm. Overall, I'm surprised we didn't get a WR or a CB. But - I went through the last 10 years of Patriots drafts, and the only WR they took with any significant value was Julian Edelman, who was a QB-turned-WR-flyer in the 7th round. I guess Quinn is following the strategy of devaluing that position, at least in the draft.

Do you honestly expect something more than a depth pick out of the Dahl slot? The fact that people are irrationally annoyed at the 6th round pick from a franchise who seems to never get their 2nd or 3rd round picks to pan out is a sign of a successful draft. A lot of solid players with a high chance of contributing early at in-sexy positions

Better draft that what we've seen out of them in a long time.  At least someone who has a clue is selecting guys that, as a whole, notch up the strength of the team in areas of need.

If Quinn can turn Lions into half of what Patriots is, I will be happy. Overall, a good draft. I liked Rudock pick. He will be a valuable backup. They definitely did well I the first four rounds.

I thought it was it was a good draft and a good start at rebuilding a foundation of young depth on the lines.  You can kind of tell that the new GM has a long term strategy right now that I think is going is going to pay off down the road.  I like that there was no wasted picks on high risk players.  I like the idea of bulding from the inside out, then adding the right skilled position players when the time is right.

I thought the LS was a good move that deep in the draft. He has the skills to be fancy. That means we are going to have some fancy misdirection type of plays in our futures! Overall, the draft was very un-Lion like. The picks actually made sense. Rudock was a solid choice for a back-up QB. Everyone knows how smart and coachable he is. I wouldn't be surprised if he surprises us down the road. Overall, I'm throwing a sold "B" grade on this draft.
