OT: Things that annoy you on MGOBLOG

Submitted by Dawggoblue on
On the eve of MGoBlog football (or non-OT) season, I thought this might make an interesting topic. What behaviors do you find most annoying on MGOBLOG?

I'll start with a couple:

-People who start posts about what annoys them in a retail store.

-Draftageddon

like, a couple weeks ago my brother sent me a link at 10:30PM to a yahoo story, "Starbucks' Horchata Frappuccino is Subjected To A Latino Taste Test," because he knows I love Horchata. My response? "Quit drinking horchata frappuccino and go to bed." See, there it works.

Recruiting.  I understand that it is the job of college athletic staff to find good players and coach them into better players.  I find it strange/inappropriate that adult fans are following the decisions of high school kids.  I also think it is insane that there are published rankings and websites for high school players.  But hey, I don't click on those threads.

These people start topics about slight changes in a 17 year olds twitter page and get genuinely worried about what it might mean. They look up who they follow and the tweets they like. That stuff should be quarantined to the pay sites and not here, its so fucking weird and obsessive.

100% cosign. Recruiting is basically the worst. The creepiest, weirdest worst.

At least MGoBlog is free from the radio call-in recruiting stuff where you have freaks calling in about an 8th grader they watched the other day. At a middle school game they voluntarily went to that included none of their actual children.

The worst has to be when someone posts a link to an article with no summary or highlights or comments.  This board is not an RSS feed (whatever those are).  Tell us what the article is about, or at least give us some thoughts! How else is a discussion supposed to start?

On that same line of thinking...

Last I checked, amateur football players are potentially putting their long-term health and safety at risk in practice and in the grand temple that Yost built, working extremely long hours, physically and mentally punished, and are deserving of our support.  When they don't meet our expectations of perfection 100%, they get crucified, publicly called out.  Apply that same standard to your personal and professional life -- imagine how shitty that would be.   Now imagine it happening if you were 17-22 years old, still trying to figure out who you are.

When our incredible coaching staff offers a hidden gem, see St. Juste, Kwity, McKeon, who doesn't have (the sky is falling) 4+ stars attached, there is a negative chorus that seems to think that 3-9 is coming to A2 soon.  Again, imagine you're a 17-18 year old young man who just made one of the most important decisions in your young life, you log onto MGoBlog to see the reaction and maybe affirmation, and instead you get a flaming bag of shit thrown at you by your new "family."

This staff knows what it's doing and knows how to judge talent and desire.  We should give these young men the chance to succeed and be behind them all the way if they don't make it all the way to the top.  Tempered venting is fine, flaming vitriole is not.

I love M and M football to the bone.  I was at Bo's last game and was in tears when it ended the wrong way -- although it was the way Bo's bowl games so often ended.  I was there too in '97 when Leaf heaved the pigskin in desperation as M climbed the mountain.  Have seen horrible losses at U Dub, Eugene, ND stadium (2X).  Great victories when Forcier ('09) and Denard (UTL) willed us to victories over ND.  I was raised on Ufer's weekly Saturday sermons.   Bitter and Sweet.  I've had many failures in my life and I do my best to get back up with dignity and do my best, give my best the next time.  That's what M instills in us.  Strive for our best.  Pick ourselves up when we fall.

That's what our coaching staff tries to teach these young men.  More important than winning is the way Harbaugh teaches (and Bo) taught young men to be good men, good fathers and husbands.  For a lifetime.

When I come to the site specifically for Michigan Football/Basketball info and there's AA politics on the front page. Or when I come here for the UM FB/BB info and there is a fantasy draft on the front page that the sites proprietor harasses people on twitter for not liking the free "content" even though I come here for the message board.

Where you DID NOT find what you need? I doubt it.

What else is there to talk about from the end of April until about now? Nothing. You can only extract so much data from the very little activity that occurs during these months.

When the seasons are going on, there's more than enough info. Probably too much sometimes.

The posting of cat photos.   Who does this?  Cat Ladies?

Muppet videos?    Really?   Jim Henson is Maryland grad and they have a monument on their campus for him.....    Drop it and grow up.

However. keep the three and nine references going.

- Live threads for low-interest sporting events that boil down to the OP talking to themselves about what they're watching

- Score threads for low-interest sporting events. If I truly cared how the water polo team did, I was probably already watching or looked for the score.

- T-shirt threads. Or, threads about threads, if you will.

- I don't get "Talking Cars Tuesday."

1. Anyone who gets mad that I didn't read the 108th comment on an OT topic to know that something was already "posted" on the blog.

2. Drafteggedon

3. Pretty much all responses that are only GIFs or a repeated meme that just isn't funny anymore

4. People who make fun of MSU for being obsessed with us and then point out rankings to prove we're happier than they are.  You can't make fun of them for caring about our status/success if you care about their status/(lack of)success.

5. "3-9" jokes.

6. Defense of Brian by saying, it's his blog, he can do what he wants.  Well, yes, of course, but I'm allowed to be annoyed still.  No one is threatening to jail him but we can point out questionable opinions or statements.

7. People who post bad titles or no summary of a link.  I don't mind all of the random OT stuff.  Add any topic you want and if the subject is clear I'll just move along.  Way too many people post things like, "Subject: interesting article.  Post:  Neat stuff: LINK"  You need to at least summarize the article in a sentence or two.

8. People who feel that they are stealing content by posting any part of a public source.  I get not posting a paid content article or even an original insightful piece of writing, but don't make me click a twitter link to learn something very basic.  Don't "tease" basic content.  Theoretically, you think whatever you are posting is interesting and worth sharing so you want me to see it to.  Tell me why I might care or give a quick summary.  If I agree that it's interesting I'll go read the full article.  Without any summary, I'm just going to ignore it.

9. People who believe mgopoints mean something and do things only to build points.

10. Drupal

11. Game Previews that are posted late on a Friday.  i read mgoblog to waste time at work.  If something comes out late on a Friday I probably won't see it until Sunday night or Monday.

12.  People who turn on 17 year old kids the second it looks like they might choose another school.  We all love Solomon now though, right?

13. People who post news about someone and act like we all know everyone by a single name or even nickname.  Just use the full name.  I've seen posts like "Jackson in trouble" or "Zack commits to XYZ"  This is especially true when discussing recruits.  Sorry, i don't know all 200 kids considering UM in the 2020 class by first name.

14. People who post questions to the board but don't edit the post to summarize.  If you feel the need to post, take 10 minutes and update the OP with whatever information you learned. There are a lot of questions I'd be interested to see answers to, but I'm not going to read 40 memes and 15 side topics before finding the few actual answers deep in the comments.

Generally, when anyone acts pretentious, or in a HEY-EVERYONE-LOOK-HOW-MAD-I-AM-ABOUT-THIS-SLIGHTLY-OFFENSIVE-TOPIC manner.

People Tweeting recruits/players.

Who cares what Joe Bucknuts has to say about a game, a play, a school or something in 140 characters or less?

I've seen our resident sock aficionado get worked into a lather over something an Ohio State player said online.

Dude, it's not personal, it's the interwebs, get outside more -- and I mean more than M DEN trips.
