OT: Talking Unsolved Legends/Events Wednesday. Yuba County 5

Submitted by Eli on June 19th, 2019 at 9:30 AM

Happy Hump Day, lets get through the day. Today’s topic is the Yuba County 5. For those unfamiliar, here is a basic breakdown..

5 guy friends age in their 20s and 30s went to a small college basketball game in Northern California in February of 1978 and never returned home. The men all had slight mental disabilities or issues and they had met at the center that helped them with this. 2 of the 5 could drive.

Their car was found on a snowy mountain road and later 4 of the 5 bodies were found and all died from hypothermia or starvation. The 5th body has never been found and Gary Mathias is still considered missing. He was a military veteran and had schizophrenia, but many believed he faked it for attention. I personally believe he purposely led them astray and I believe he might still be alive (lots of strange circumstances surrounding his family and so forth). One of the guys was found in a trailer wrapped in sheets where he starved to death, yet there was plenty of food within reach.

If you look it up you will see that the events are very strange indeed. Anyways, what does everyone think happened with this event? Many call this the American Dyatlov Pass.

I have somehow never heard of this, I will have to, look into it, if you know what I mean! What is the reasoning as to why the one guy starved to death within reach of food? Is it because they think he was held against his will in the trailer?

My guess is that you’re basing your evidence off the full fruits and vegetables sections in the front of the store. My guess is that if you ventures back towards the sporting goods section you would find many coolers full of poop, which I would say contradicts your theory of starvation.

He seems crazy from what I have researched. One account said he broke into an old couples house and stood over their bed at night and said he was looking for a ring that belonged to satan and they owed him rent money because they were in his house. After this incident he supposedly straightened up.

I'll check it out.

I love podcasts on the unexplained and paranormal.

In the 90's after a late shift at Nubs or Angell Hall computing sites I'd listen to Art Bell on the radio.

nowadays the podcasts kind of scratch that itch. But its not like having Art go over scratchy AM.

Let me know the week we're going to discuss the Denver airport.  To me that's the weirdest thing I've looked into and mostly because of the sheer number of people who had to be involved in the construction "oddities".

Much of it hiding in plain site.  Much of of it buried underground.  And all of it requiring the cooperation of a LOT of people to make it happen.

Blucifer, the layout of the runways, the odd murals...all things that lead to conspiracy theories.

The location of Denver, the extra long runways, the underground construction currently underway...all things that clearly point to there being a high profile bunker underneath the airport.

There is nothing out of the ordinary at Denver's airport. And what I mean by nothing, is that there is a massive industrialized military complex, completely function in plain site that also serves as the backup to running the country should D.C. become comprised.

Again, there is nothing there.

Well, Dulce is not too far from either (1) Roswell or (2) the San Luis Valley of Colorado.  There have seriously been something like 100+ reports of UFOs in the San Luis Valley over the past 50 years.  There's no better spot for a secret military base housing aliens!

But speaking of New Mexico.  A few years ago, I was driving around NE New Mexico.  I don't mind getting off the main highways and exploring around.

So I was in a pretty remote spot - the road I was on was still paved but I also hadn't seen another car for 30 minutes.  Until I see a few prop planes flying real low, seemingly directly over me.  And then a car pulls in behind me and is on my tail for a good 10 miles before peeling off.  It was all rather alarming.  Frightening, honestly, given I was rather isolated in the high desert.  I did some google searching on the area when I got back to Denver.

Turns out the area where all that happened was right next to where the Scientology folk have one of their big remote compounds!  I guess they might have thought I was a spy or something?!?!?!?!?

My favorite sports related legend is the Cal Ripken/Kevin Costner rumor (https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/the-costner-of-love/).

Cal Ripken, Jr. was allowing Kevin Costner, the actor, to stay at his house, following the wrap of “The Postman”. One day, Ripken left for Camden Yards to play in a game. Somewhere between his home and the stadium, Cal realized that he had left something back at his house, and turned back to retrieve it. Upon arriving at his home, he found Kevin Costner in bed with his wife, Kelly. Cal then proceeded to beat the crap out of Costner, to the point that Costner was unable to make any publicity opportunities for a time. Cal then called the Orioles, and told them he wouldn’t be coming in to play that day. Upon hearing this, the owner reminded Cal about his streak, telling him The Streak would end if he didn’t play that day. Cal told him it was impossible for him to come in, so there went the streak. Reportedly, the owner told him not to worry, because he would take care of it. That night, the game was cancelled due to “electrical failure” with some lights on the field. The caller [I heard this rumor from] said that there was no problem with the lights, that everything else, including the hotels and restaurants that are part of Camden Yards, worked perfectly. The next day, the lights were fixed, Cal was able to play, and the streak stayed intact.

Do I think it happened? No.  That still didn't stop me from bringing it up when I went to Camden Yards in the early 2000s.  Whoever started that rumor gets an A+ for creativity.

I think they covered this on Unsolved Mysteries or one of those other shows like that.

Here's a link to a discussion of it:

https://mentalfloss.com/article/532063/bizarre-hell-disappearance-yuba-county-five

The one possible eyewitness (Shones) thought he saw people in the area, "He would later say he saw a group of men, one woman, and a baby" walking near the abandoned car.

That makes this even more weird.

I know it's rude -- Sorry. I know I can move past and just not click. I will in the future. I know there's nothing else happening on the board as we all wait for baseball to resume, which is the only reason I clicked this crap in the first place. I know this thread is doing absolutely no harm. I know...

But I hope this thread and all ensuing Wednesday nonsense threads die a fiery death posthaste. What do I think happened? How in the holy fuck would I know and why would anybody give a shit about anyone's unprovable bullshit theory?

I feel better. Good luck with your nonsense everybody.

I'm into this stuff so I have no problem - especially midweek in the summer. But I kind of see your point.

But, what if we called it Unsolved 'M'-ysteries Wednesday and kept the topics Michigan related? Like the 1966 Ann Arbor UFO sightings or the urban legend that a couple bought a car that mysteriously got 200 miles/gallon and was reposessed by shadowy figures allegedly from a Detroit automaker?

Or Ann Arbor/UM ghost stories? Of which I know none. Anybody know any? I don't know if there is a less haunted 200+ year old campus than Michigan.

The only podcasts I listen to besides Mgoblog/WTKA-related podcasts are paranormal ones (well I listen to Preet Bharara's as well). I got into What If? podcast a while back and they did an episode on this: http://whatifpodcast.com/american-dyatlov-pass/.  'What If' is kind of goofy and broey and the excess banter can get annoying but generally I like it. The Skinwalker Ranch episode got me hooked - I highly recommend that one.

Not Alone, an even nerdier podcast about paranormal stuff, isn't bad either.

Both pods take interesting tacks on these issues - they're genuinely interested in these phenomena but don't buy a lot of the nonsense surrounding them. They try to find the most legit answers but in some cases the conventional explanations are lacking!
