OT- Stamkos Re-Signing with the Lightning

Submitted by FatGuyTouchdown on

According to Bob McKenzie of TSN, Steven Stamkos will re-sign with the Tampa Bay Lightning. This comes as a bit of a surprise as the three favorites to sign him were Detroit, Buffalo, and Toronto. This comes as a bit of a blow to the Wings, who were favorites to sign the 26 year old all star.

(Sorry I cant embed tweets so can someone else embed McKenzie's?)

It's all about lucking up and tanking the right year(s) and being fortunate enough to grab certain superstar players, which Chicago did. They got extremely lucky during the years they tanked. Though a team could tank for many years and still struggle to turn things around. Edmonton is a prime example. You still need some luck. The Oilers may have recently drafted the kid who can finally put them back on the right path, but it's been taking them awhile. Even if the Red Wings had tanked these last few years, they probably wouldn't have been as lucky as Chicago. Therefore tanking isn't the sole solution, especially without the luck. The Blackhawks definitely hit the right Lotto numbers during their down years of tanking.

How Mantha got no time in the playoffs is a mystery.  He joins the team in the season, power play % goes up.  Then they sit him in the playoffs and Holland/Blashill dismisses his impact.  Anthanasiou goes out there and draws penalty after penalty to give us those impotent power plays, and he gets less time than Glendening.  Once again, Blashill talks like AA hasn't earned more minutes.  Oh, and metrics will show you that Brendan Smith was our best defenseman last year.  But he was a healthy scratch during the playoffs.

Holland is not the gold standard for GMs, but Blashill is worrying me that he's the hockey version of Brad Ausmus with curious lineup manuevers and no respect in the clubhouse.

The Wings are only favorites to land prized free agents in the minds of Wings fans it would appear because Holland never gets the job done. That man needs to go, his legacy is more about missing and managing a mediocre team than about managing an elite NHL team. But he will remain forever because he was born on third and the Illitch family are convinced he hit a triple.
