OT: Spurrier retiring...immediately????
Per @WesMitchellGC and I, we have confirmed that Steve Spurrier plans to retire. No timeline immediately known. He informed team tonight.

I'm worried that there are way too many openings and people are going to be sniffing around all the assistants, but especially Durkin.
Edit: I'm not sure how we are feeling about Football Scoop around here, but...
FootballScoop has learned that South Carolina will name their interim head coach tomorrow morning http://t.co/sD4KPc0THi

In the middle of the season? Always thought he'd go out like a gangster, instead of like this

He will go down as one of the greatest college football coaches of all time, and easily the greatest coach in South Carolina football program history.

Spurrier was a real innovator in his day, and also ended up proving an old dog can learn some new tricks. Really respect a guy who took three nothing programs to prominence. Hell, people think of Florida as a blue blood now, and that's all thanks to him.
Few people showed the motivational power of hatred like Spurrier.

But I genuinely believed Spurrier when he used to say, "the day I think I can't do this any more, I'll step down. I'm not going to hang around and wait for someone to fire me."

hire, someone who knows the area and can go head to head with SEC & ACC recruiters. I think some one like Stoops @ Kentucky (UK is used to losing successful coaches to other SEC teams in football), Ruffin @ ECU, or Muschamp if he wants to get back in the HC ranks. My dark horse - clarevoyant pick of the week is Mike Leach leaves Wazzu after leading them to a bowl game to take the SoCar job. Swing your Sword off the Palmetto Coast!

If he's retiring immediately, then to me it seems one of two things:
(1) Pressure from AD to appease a fanbase that got used to 11-win seasons.
(2) Health issues from being a 70 year old man in a stressful job.
At least he's doing it now on his terms, rather than what's happened at USC (YTUSC).

named interim.

a year or two ago, but he stayed on to pursue an SEC title, while it was there for the taking. My theory is that there's no coinicidence that Edsall was fired on Sunday and Spurrier resigned on Monday. He might be 70, but he's always been a "youthful" coach, who seems to know how to balance life/golf with football. What Maryland needs is a dynamic, big-name coach, who can, just for a few years, capitalize on the Under Armor money that Plank is willing to spend. They need someone that can recruit the DMV area. There are still far too many good recruits that leave the area. And, they need someone that can win just win 7, 8 games for a couple years to establish footing in the Big 10. You could promis Spurrier that he can bring in his entier coaching staff, including a prospective successor, with the idea that he'd retire after 3 seasons to a cushy Under Armor promotions job. Spurrier's already turned around 2 programs. Why wouldn't he be able to do it at a 3rd. And, much the same way he went to the NFL, he would be making A LOT of money and taking his style to a conference where he'd be viewed as an outsider, kind of his M.O.

IMO he's done. His contract states if he retires before the term ends, he'll have a position at the university for the remaining time. Not sure why he's leaving mid season, but I think he'll finish out his contract and call it a career.

Durkin will be interviewed for USC and South Carolina and other possible openings, and Jedd Fisch (a Spurrier protege) will be interviewed for the South Carolina job, but ultimately I guess with absolutely no objective basis:
Kyle Whittingham to USC
Mark Dantonio (!) to his alma mater South Carolina and Sparty's head will explode.
