OT: Silent Night WW1, RCMB analogy (don't click unless bored on slow news day)

Submitted by MMBbones on December 19th, 2022 at 12:08 PM

On Xmas week, I'm sure we are all familiar with the "Silent Night Truce" of WW1. If not:

Anyway, in the spirit of said holiday, I thought to wade through RCMB for any sign of intelligence, and I was sort of moderately pleasantly surprised that a (albeit admittedly small) sample of their group has stopped declaring Hutch to be the worst draft decision in Lions history. The trajectory of their conversation is informative.

I've linked toward the end, where sense prevails. The start of the thread is typical banter.

It's RCMB, so all caveats apply. This is just my attempt at a "hope your Christmas doesn't suck" to all in Michigan on this festive time of year, even if you couldn't get accepted into college so you went to Michigan State. I know many of their number frequent this Blog. I confess to having relatives associated therewith.

re RCMB regulars "once a paste-eater, always a paste-eater"

Not sure why anyone would go over there on a regular basis.  The point-in-time schadenfreude makes sense, but after that it just seems like it'd be an exercise in having your general impressions of humanity constantly lowered.  For that feeling I prefer to read the latest news headlines.

Ever heard of the website, People of Walmart?  It's like that.  Sure, you're intelligence isn't going to go up.  It may even go down.  That said, going and pointing and laughing at the absolute ludicrous hot takes can cure almost all forms of depression.  Don't get me wrong, we have some really bad hot takes on here as any sport board would.  Over there though, our really bad ones are on par with a doctoral thesis with peer review.  Go, enjoy yourself laughing your ass off at the absolute extreme levels of inferiority complex that they can generate followed by the infighting of them calling each other walvies over and over.

It feels like I am reading a bunch of 1st grade comments whenever I venture over to that board.  I also feel myself getting dumber after reading some of those comments.  If you ever feel like making your IQ go down, I recommend going over there.

For Sparty / Lions' fans, since Hutchinson is performing well, he is moving from the "he's a douche bag" to the all important "he's our douche bag" category.

We've seen this before.  A few examples:  Dennis Rodman (for Bulls fans) and Greg Mattison (aka Benedict Arnold) for ohio fans.  To a much lesser degree, Chris Chelios could arguably be included for Wings fans - though Chelios was always a class act no matter the laundry he was wearing.

This is a really weird take.

When Cheli was with the Hawks, he hated the Wings... and took more than one's fair share of dirty hits with Wings' forwards; especially Fedorov.

I too am glad Cheli ended up with the Wings but I think very few people who were grown-ups during those days would consider him classy from his Hawks days.

Kinda like the first Jordan game against Hawaii.  Michael Jordan was announced as the honorary captain and the crowd gave him a standing ovation.  The guy sitting next to me said, "I cannot fucking believe fucking Michael Jordan is getting a standing-O in Southeastern Michigan".

Of course the millennials in the crowd never saw the Bad Boys days.

I did my fair share of perusing over @ RCMB this year mainly due to the tunnel incident.  When I found they were giving the MSU guys the "Tunnel 8" moniker, I haven't been back since.  It was literally some of the most tone deaf, knuckle-dragging rally around the team complete lack of any awareness type stuff I had ever seen.

They know they are an inferior school.  They'll never be on our level, the leaders and best.  They will always strive to be better than us but they never will. So what do they have left?  Shitty behavior, "fuck around find out" mentality.  Violence.  They've fallen back to their reptilian brains which is devoid of rationale thought but primal instincts only.  This is just who they are now.

They caught back-to-back-to-back huge breaks to go 7-1 vs. the worst UM teams since late 50s/early 60s. RichRod didn't have a defense to stop their power running game (or Wisky's or Ohio's for that matter). Hoke got so worried about offending them that he apologized for a tent stake that he was "vaguely aware of" and beat MSU's worst team from 2010-2015 (in 2012) by a last second FG. Then the punt snap game.

Around that, starting in 2007-2022, they've gone 3-5 vs. us, with one of those the covid team. And the future is WORSE now that Mel's sticking around at least 5 more years.

But...the tunnel? And what about Juwan? And Mazi is a mad man and felon (actually neither)? And the portal is killing us (and helping our big brother)? And Jim has a DUI on his record (from 2005, really?)?

When I was in school in the 1980s, we had bumper stickers in A2 that said - "Can't get into college? Go to MSU!" --> I will say I worked with a lot of smart and hard working MSU grads during my long career but they were the exception to the rule.

They have a thread about a player who once played for their biggest rival that is larger than many of our game threads.

We not only live rent-free in their heads, we are landlords in their heads.

While Mike Hart may have been right, I'd personally prefer as a fan base, we drop the moniker. After the tunnel incident, they do not deserve any familial references.

I've seen that thread before. It was initially titled "Aidan Hutchinson is a bust" before a mod forced the change to the current title.  For the first 10 weeks of the season it was basically just sparties shitting on Aidan and Michigan.

I think the oft missed point about Hutch that people don't seem to connect with the Lions (including RCMB) is that Hutch literally came from Michigan and lived around the Detroit area.  Meaning that through the ups and downs of the franchise, since he's a hometown hero, he's more likely to resign and stay.  The people on RCMB who were lauding Thibodeux or Travon Walker don't realize that even if they are great, they probably will not stay in Detroit long term.  That's just the facts of it all.

I personally think Hutch has the higher ceiling than both and even looking at it objectively from my best attempt at an outsider perspective it's clear he never takes a play off and has a high motor.  I'll take that any day of the week over projected skill that may or may not manifest in the other 2 DE's.

Oh I 100% agree.  Osu mentally checked out at halftime, and after the game they were clearing their lockers out until Utah saved their asses. They already have a few quitters not playing UGA and the ones that are sticking around to play that game most likely do not trust their coaches or the guy next to them at this point.  UGA could beat them down worse than they beat Michigan last year.

Noone should ever rcmb.  Aidan Hutchinson is playing so good he should be defensive rookie of the year, or very close to it.

What else is there to say?
