Grand Rapids (GRR) had a dew point of 81 earlier today.  That is flat-out absurd for Michigan*.  Crazy high levels of instability in the atmosphere.

------

*The highest I can recall for MI was an 80 dew point at DTW on 14-July-1995, one of Detroit's most infamous hot and humid weather days ever.  No storms exploded that day because the atmospheric cap was so strong.  But if it had (like it did the afternoon before), whoa.

I can verify this.  Because of persistent clouds until late afternoon, the temperature only reached the mid 80s here in northern Kent County, but I saw on both my weather apps a dew point reading of 80°! (and yesterday a 79° dew point reported).  But because the temperature was 10°-15° cooler all afternoon than yesterday, I got in a 16 mile ride on the local bike trail, arriving home with my clothes soaked in sweat.

And then this evening we had a couple tornadoes reported in Kent County, and severe storms throughout the county.  There's lots of downed trees and power lines, numerous homes and businesses damaged in the same Alpine Township area of the infamous 1965 Palm Sunday tornado.

TBH, I took it at a relatively relaxed pace, averaging 5:40/mile over 16.4 miles---I usually average around 5:10/mile or less on my Trek 24-speed hybrid mountain bike and the trail is mostly flat.  And when I started today's ride it was 79° and the dew point 78°---an hour and a half later when I  finished, it was up to the 85° temp/80° dew point.

Yesterday (Wednesday), OTOH, it was still 93° when I hit the trail just 20 minutes before sundown, with a heat index of 107.  I only did 5.6 miles in that soup.

The worst of the storm appears to be on its way out here in AA/Saline. We had some very strong winds and heavy rain for a while there. Have a feeling there willl be many tree limbs down in the morning.

My team somehow luckily was able to get our game in tonight. As we were cleaning up the field the lightning began. My entire block is flooded now. Stay safe y’all!

Had to drive to Hartland to put my awnings in on my camper. It got insane just as i got there. No damage and I guess it was fun to be Lieutenant Dan for about 90 seconds.

Came back home and the power is out. Should have just stayed out at the camper.

Yup! I’m a Williamston resident and there are a lot of bad reports, specifically around I-96. Ingham county emergency services requested that people not call unless it was a major emergency because all resources were/are tied up.

The Belmont area north of Grand Rapids had a spotter report a tornado touched down last night. Reported winds of 104 mph. I drove down 7 Mile between Alpine and Pine Island and it’s unreal.

Reports of a tornado briefly touching down at the Arctic Edge parking lot in Canton last night.  We were definitely in the basement in my house in Canton from 10:15 to 11:00, but avoided the worst of it.

And this was the same day after Canton saw many streets with a foot of standing water in the morning.  It has been quite the eventful August.

That's crazy. I'm in Canton, too, about 3 miles north of Arctic Edge. Right before the tornado warning was issued, we moved the kids down to our basement and just all slept down there. Made sense especially with the power out. The kids didn't know anything until they woke up this morning. Glad we were safe, especially with the weather from the night before. 8" of rain in 2 days! Unreal.

This is a bit dated - but, there are areas where power is out in Ann Arbor.   So, if you have kids who have already moved into a house or apartment - they may be without power for parts of the day.   OR - depending on Detroit Edison's responsiveness - they could be out of power until some time tomorrow.

Live in Brighton.  You could see the tornado on radar as a round hole in the heavy precip.  First time in 20 years I've headed for the basement.  By the time it got to us, it was not tornadic any longer, but super windy and lots of lightning.  Power stayed on, internet/cable went out.

Probably the worst back-to-back nights of severe weather I've seen. Last night was definitely the worst storm here since I've been back. West of us by 20 miles there were reports of 80 mph straight-line winds, and the dew point definitely hit 80 here. Virtually unheard of.
