OT: Ryder Cup - Day One, general discussion - Europe sweeps opening session

I had to Google ryders cup in safe mode to know what it was about. The word "foursomes" and had my hopes up.

I thought the OT period ended a month ago.
You know what Mark Twain called golf: "A good walk spoiled. "

I'm not a big golf guy so I may be missing the obvious, but how can the Ryder Cup have a home-field advantage?
There are no refs to be swayed by screaming crowds. Golfers get to scout the course beforehand so local knowledge can't be a great advantage. Both golf teams are sleeping in hotels instead of comfortably at home.
So can someone explain why the US hasn't won in Europe in 30 years?
September 29th, 2023 at 7:26 AM ^
Well, the actual answer to that doesn’t have a whole lot to do with where it is played. The European team typically has much greater chemistry and seem to genuinely enjoy the team atmosphere more. The US team usually feels like 12 different corporations doing a very complex merger.
But there is “home field.” The Ryder Cup is not a typical event. The crowd is very loud, especially in Europe, and the teams feed off it. Additionally, many of the courses they play in Europe are really soft with slower greens. American professionals almost uniformly prefer faster greens (within reason). I don’t remember the last time a US team putted well in an “away” Ryder Cup.

The home team can set up a course to fit the strengths of their players. For example, if you have a bunch of bombers, you can cut the rough short so wayward shots aren’t as penal. That said, the 30-year thing is odd.

Good point and they just talked about how the US is better from 180 in, so the course was set up to leave more long iron shots.

Golf is such a mental game that once something bad gets into the players heads it's hard to get out.
The coaching aspect of Ryder Cup gets way overblown by the media. I love the shots of the captains riding around in golf carts with walkie talkies as if anything they do makes a difference.
September 29th, 2023 at 8:00 AM ^
It is overblown, but matchups and pairings do matter, as do when certain players sit out. It is hard to be a “really good” captain based on anything they do, but I have seen really bad ones. Looking at you Hal Sutton.

No refs to be swayed, but the golfers are definitely motivated by home crowds. And if home golfers can be motivated, surely away golfers can be intimidated.
RE: the course: The DP World (European) Tour adds the chosen course to their tournament rota the few years before, allowing guys to get actual tournament reps at the course instead of just practice rounds. Also, there is quite a lot of course manipulation by the home teams. Historically, US players hit the ball longer but much more offline, so the fairways are narrowed, the rough is grown tall and thick, and the greens are slowed down from what the players are used to in the US.
There isn't one thing to point to as to why the US hasn't won in Europe in 30 years, but lots of individual reasons in each year, that I think add up to an overall down streak. And with each loss, the pressure grows, making the win that much harder to acquire. Kind of similar to how The Game went for Michigan for the first 20 years this century.

The advantages of "home-field" in the Ryder Cup is mainly the home crowd atmosphere. Another advantage that is often overlooked is the home team also sets the course up to best suit their players abilities. Example, at Whistling Straits they had a couple drivable par 4's that benefited more US players than Europeans.

It's the water.

Wow, lots of solid info in the answers. Thanks!

I was really looking forward to this. Really hope the U.S. doesn't lose this thing on day 1.
September 29th, 2023 at 8:02 AM ^
I've never seen a Ruder Cup possibly out of reach before I woke up on Day One before.
September 29th, 2023 at 8:11 AM ^
Will I watch? Probably not so much now since the U.S. got crushed this morning. Looking at the rosters, I haven't even heard of half the players.
September 29th, 2023 at 8:28 AM ^
Who have you not heard of on the US side? I can understand not knowing a couple Euros since they qualify through the DP world tour and not all of them play on the PGA regularly
September 29th, 2023 at 10:32 AM ^
With “not knowing half these guys,” he meant “Tiger and Phil aren’t playing.”

This is utter domination. Europe is making EVERYTHING
September 29th, 2023 at 8:38 AM ^
Europe teabagging the US.

I think you just convinced MgoHillbilly to watch this.
September 29th, 2023 at 8:42 AM ^
I just want to watch Hovland. While I think he's great already, I think this guy is going to dominate the game for the next couple of decades. Amazing to watch him play.

The Ryder Cup is one the great sporting events period. The pressure in this event is like no other. It's 9:16am and we're down 4-0? Not a great start Bob.
September 29th, 2023 at 2:02 PM ^
My exact thought. The top golf event by a long shot and one of the top 5 sporting events...period.
The intensity and pressure is off the charts.
In many ways you can thank Seve for making it what it is.
This thing meant everything to him and he pulled Europe out of a "who cares" state of mind to make this thing so intense.

First session was ugly...couldn't sink a damn putt and the Euros were on fire. Bad combination.
September 29th, 2023 at 10:01 AM ^
A little momentum here though.
Let’s go boys. 5-3 after day one would be fine, particularly after the Euros thought it was just going to be cruise control. Johnson should stick with Sheffler/Koepka all weekend. Tough combo there.

The euros made every damn putt imaginable. USA had 1-up leads going into 18 twice, and both euro groups nailed 20+ foot putts to win 18. It should, at minimum, be 5.5-2.5 right now, which while pretty bad, is WAY better than the reality of 6.5-1.5.
September 29th, 2023 at 4:36 PM ^
The Euros made some putts but the US gagged for sure. Jordan Spieth… my man? And Homa and Clark can’t halve that match. They just can’t. That is like losing a game with a 15 point lead with 5 minutes to go in s basketball game. And they didn’t lose it because their opponents played well. They just lost it because they could not win it.
The only silver lining is that the European team may go to sleep tonight thinking this thing is over. It really is far from it.
September 29th, 2023 at 11:06 AM ^
I'll be watching. Much better afternoon start than the morning obviously. We'll see.
Grumpy old man mode: maybe don't put the outcome in the headline at 7:08 AM for matches that started at 1:35AM in case anyone wants to be watching on delay...

European team is much more focused and emotional. Kicking the USA teams ass. Wish we could replace Zach Johnson as captain mid match. What a dud of a captain.
September 29th, 2023 at 12:43 PM ^
Way to go guys. Maybe next time just use a random number generator to pick the team.
September 29th, 2023 at 1:50 PM ^
Losing three straight final holes to halve three matches was utterly embarrassing. This team was not ready, and they're going to get routed. Tough look.

Fair point, but not being able to close those matches out on 18 was comically bad. Choked on 18 in three straight.
