OT - **Rumor** Pistons trading for Paul George

Submitted by The Legion on

It is only a rumor at this point, but the deal that is being rumored is the Pistons would trade Stanley Johnson, KCP, Tobias Harris, 1st round pick 2017, 2nd round pick 2018, and 1st round pick for 2019. In return, the Pistons would get Paul George and Monta Ellis.

Could be.  I'd say George is more of a SG, but SVG does what he does. That would be our best five.

Jackson/Smith
George/Ellis
Morris/George
Leuer/Morris
Drummond/Baynes

So say that's our 8 man rotation.  How far does that get us?  Does it get us a better seed?  Do we advance further in the playoffs?

Don't look at where the new rotation will get us now b(If this trade was executed), look where things will be in a year or two.

It lands Detroit a quote unquote Superstar to pair with Drummond. Which in effect, would possible lure other mid-top tier talent to Detroit.

Or, the alternative would be to bank on Stanley Johnson or KCP or any of the draft picks to eventually meet or exceed the skillset of Paul George.

It's DETROIT. You have to pull the trigger on this trade.

We have to agree that we are mortgaging the future, right?

24, 23, 20 year old and a number of pure potential assets for a 26 and a 31 year old.

If we are consolidating assets from the youngest playoff-caliber seed, it BETTER catapult us in the short-term. To do that and *not* hope for immediate gains?  I don't really follow, and I don't buy into the notion that Detroit will be a bandwagon FA destination, especially when we're capped out.

It's Paul George and Andre Drummond, not Curry/Thompson/Draymond, not James/Love/Irving, not Anthony/Porzingis.  It's Detroit, not Chicago/New York/California/Florida.

I think the mistake here is that you're only looking at this season. Yes our depth would take a large hit and our roster would be worse. But I feel it is so, so much easier to find role players to fill holes around a star than it is to find a star. We would obviously be targetting a new SG & stretch 4 in FA after the season. I feel we would have the opportunity to be significantly better next year.

Ellis is definitely a poor fit with this roster but may have some value in scoring for us off the bench. That said I would definitely think SVG would be looking at ways to unload his contract during the offseason.

While, no, I don't believe this would make Detroit a prime FA market I also do believe some players would look at the core we put together of Reggie/PG/Andre along with a proven coach in SVG and see this as a destination they can go win at.

This here is just an offish topic thought. I believe Stanley Johnson is going to eventually be a good player. He needs to mature both off the court and with his on court skill set. Which is going to take awhile. Just seems like he is going to be one of those guys who wears out his welcome here then finally has it click 5-6 years down the road when he is with someone else.

Paul George is one of the 10 best players in the NBA. Pair him up with Drummond who is on his way to being one of the 15ish best. With both under contract for the next 3-4 years, that makes it an appealing spot for a great, but not exceptional player. Think Al Horford level. It would be a major gamble, but most mid-markets need to take that kind of risk to be successful. I would prefer that we kept Tobias, but oh my that would be terrific.

Giving up first round picks is absurd. What happens if George get's injured again and we are back in the lottery without our pick?  We'd be worse off than the 76'ers.

This makes coaching rumors from the past 15 years look reasonable instead of hot take theater. I can't believe this was posted, let alone believed. Have we forgot how SVG operates?
