My buddy and I were talking a while back about the Bond series and debating who the quintissential Bond really was. I know Connery was the original and Craig updated the series for a lot of people while Moore's films were a bit ridiculous and campy, particularly the later ones. But that conversation made me realize that so many of the tropes that I really associate with the James Bond movies come straight from Roger Moore. The flamboyance and ridiculousness was always part of the fun.

Every Bond movie and just about every action movie is unrelatistic to some degree.  They have to make it sensational or nobody would by tickets, we'd just watch CNN instead for the real world.

I've always preferred Roger Moore's Bond for his quick wit and ability to always make the right move.  It's all fantasy and unrealistic, so why not go full throttle.

Roger Moore is why I feel like Daniel Craig is such a huge departure from what the 007 movies really are. And the difference between those two actors makes me pretty indifferent about who the next James Bond is, whether it's Hiddleston, Elba, etc.

Your first sentence made me laugh when I realized it was a joke, initially my feelings were hurt. But, what's wrong with being basically Jason Bourne? Not saying I agree that he's basically Jason Bourne.

The classic Bond films were too delicate, Bond had no depth at all. It's quite hilarious that you dismiss what the novels represent seeing as that is the original representation of the character. The old movies were like caricatures of Bond.

One of the things I love about the Bond movies is that they reflect the times when they are made.  The over-the-top Moore movies fit the 80's, while Craig's darker, even crueler, bond is reflective of a world increasingly responding to terror attacks.  It is interesting that Craig's Bond is closer to the books which were first written within a decade of the end of World War II and during the early-Cold War.

Bond fan, but I'll go you one further. Bond franchise has routinely aped whatever was popular at the time. North by Northwest (From Russia with Love), blackspoitation (live and let die), Moonraker (star wars), indiana jones (octapussy - ok octapussy was 3 years earlier but I'm on a roll here) and of course the unforgiveable Skyfall / Dark Night shot for shots. Also, Skyfall's last 3rd was way too close to Home alone for me.

As well he should have been, he is, or was, three years older than Sean Connery.  Interesting bit of trivia, the producers of James Bond thought Sean Connery was getting too old to play James Bond so they went with the older Roger Moore.  Of course Moore still had all his hair which meant he could do more without the worry of his hair falling off.

Not my favorite Bond Girl, but Maud Adams must have been a producer's favorite.  She first appeared in Man with the Golden Gun as Scaremonga's love interest and then as Octopussy.  Finally she had an uncredited role in View To A Kill.

...but I openly think that Roger Moore was the best James Bond.  Said it for years.  No one said, "Bond, James Bond" better than Roger Moore.  I thought Connery was too much of a thug.  Roger Moore brought style and panache to the James Bond character.

Connery gets the nod looking back, but Moore was my childhood 007 and the first James Bond I think of ...sad as more time passes and childhood memories begin to pass away.

Everyone wants to talk about Bond, but for me Roger Moore was also Simon Templar, "The Saint".

When I was an RA in South Quad, I used to stay up and watch "Saint" reruns at 1am.  I really enjoyed that show and my memories of that year are linked to it.  RIP

A P1800 S, as I recall. It's funny how you become attached to the Bond you first experience. For me, It's Sean Connery by a wide margin, particularly before gadgets took over. The plots to Dr. No and From Russia with Love were more character sleuthing driven, and more in the spirit of the books. Put Sean and Roger on a couple of bar stools, and it's Sean that pulls the pussy.

Roger Moore was the first James Bond I knew with Octopussy being the first of the series' films that I watched. I guess as a kid I preferred him over Connery and even Dalton, but he just played the role differently with his style and the way he was comfortable doing it, and to me is fine.

And yes, he was also The Saint...but he was also Beau Maverick in Maverick (taking over for James Garner when he left the show), and one of The Persuaders with Tony Curtis.

You were a smooth operator and added to the character's legendary cannon of dialogue. You will be missed.

From Dr. No (1962) when he was at the beach with bond girl "Honey Ryder":

Bond: 'Don't worry. I'm not supposed to be here either.'

Honey Ryder: 'Are you looking for shells, too?'

Bond: 'No, I'm just looking.'
