OT: RIP Harper Lee, author of To Kill a Mockingbird

One of my favorite books and I would say the very best of the 20th century outside of escapist fantasy tales.

Can't wait for Santa's Book Review tbh

This even further brings into question the circumstances leading to the release of To Set a Watchman. Somebody is making a lot of money off of that and it isn't Harper Lee.

Very first thing I thought too. This absolutely smacks of an old woman without her full faculties getting taken advantage of, and even more now...

because the book is... how do you say...... pretty bad. I think there is a reason it was not published before, and IMO, there is no way she would have consented to its release as a "finished novel" of any variety.

because they felt that the circumstances of its publication, and the fact that it was a draft novel, made it extremely suspect.

No offense to anyone who likes any of the above --- but I prefer to pretend none of the 3 exist.
To Kill a Mockingbird was absolutely great. RIP Harper Lee.

Wasn't that bad. Especially when you consider the fact that it was a sequel to one of the greatest films of all time (I'm counting 1 and 2 as a single film). Sure, it wasn't great, but it had its moments.
Rocky 5 was just terrible in every way. Although punch-drunk Rocky was kind of funny, if you enjoy laughing at cripples.

3 was a very confusing combination of really good and really terrible. It is a good movie, it just doesn't feel like a Godfather movie. Rocky V - Yeah, wow. So, now that the Rock has brain damage he just goes back to talking exactly the way he did in Rocky 1. Weird. What a disaster that was (minus the flashback with Micky in the gym which was an absolutely great scene in an otherwise terrible movie).

If Coppola had not cast his daughter, who was an absolutely dreadful actor, as Michael's kid, GF III might not have been too bad. Parts were quite good, other parts (all that involved her) were dreadful. Overall, just sort of a mess.

was truly a disaster. Pretty damn good director though.

Godfather 3 wasn't too bad and provided us with one of the more memorable quotes of the trilogy....

To Kill A Mockingbird is a pillar of American literature ...

me it is 1 and 1A with TKAM and In Cold Blood. I tend to favor In Cold Blood. Perhaps because I am creepy?

were neighbors and close friends. What are the chances that the authors of two of the best and most influential novels of all time lived right next door to each other? What are the chances that the author of possibly the best American novel ever written never wrote anything else again?
No, seriously, what are the chances? Something fishy there? Nah, can't be.

but out of all the books I was assigned to read over my academic career, this was easily my favorite. Thank you for making the world just a little bit better Ms. Lee. RIP

Is the 2nd novel about Steven Avery?
February 19th, 2016 at 11:20 AM ^
it is about Robert Durst.

I even loved the movie.

movie adaptations, which is not easy to do given the pressure when you have such a beloved book. Is it the best book for an author who only published one? (I am not counting the recent book, for reasons stated above.)

That is if you don't buy into the theory that JD Salinger actually authored TKAM.

Very sad to hear of this, To Kill a Mockingbird is one of my favorite books and I look forward to reading Go Set a Watchman (even though I have heard it doesn't compete).

I really liked Go Set A Watchman. Of course it's going to pale in comparison to one of the finest English-language novels ever written, but even with all its flaws, it's still a great read.

I'm a little embarrassed to admit it, but I had no idea she was still alive this recently. For some reason I thought the book was written earlier than it was (1960).
February 19th, 2016 at 12:11 PM ^
bought it, couldn't bring my self to read it because I felt like Harper Lee didn't really want it published... of course I already paid...
I should get around to reading it.

Sorry, from one UM alum living in VA to another, I hate to say I had to downvote this for just being 100% irrelevant to like, anything related whatsoever to this site other than turning our forums into a gossip column on all relevant daily news.
I'd bet 99% of readers here will click on a news site at least once a day to learn about things like Scalia or Lee's passing.

is not just a news site but a forum for discussion. Football is over and the OT rules are relaxed during the off-season. There is no question that you know this, but you clicked on the thread just to say this despite your knowledge. Huh.
