OT: Oscars
Will Smith gets 5-game suspension. Chris Rock fined $10,000.
On another note, out of genuine curiosity, anyone see and love any of the nominated/ winning films? Busy with work and two kids under 3, I've seen far too few films this past year, but would like to check out a couple. Any favorites/ must sees?
CODA isn't schmaltzy but compared to other movies, nobody dies and there are some funny parts. Maybe more like Little Miss Sunshine? Many of this year's nominees are on streaming on VUDU/Fandango. Drive My Car btw has a many scenes where is deaf character signs including probably one of the most powerful finales I've seen in cinema.

Jada didn't like the joke, so she told her little effeminate lap puppy to girly-slap and yap at Chris.
I am sure Jada will be with Will's Oscar soon

Funny how will Smith is so upset about another dude making a bald joke about his wife but he's okay with another dude nailing his wife.
I think he does the same thing. It goes both ways in that house.
Yes, they each are free to be with other people.

The Best Picture winner, CODA, was excellent - my favorite movie last year. Dune was also quite amazing, and if you have kids of course Encanto.

Agree. Coda is very deserving of Best Picture. Good to see the Academy get it right every once in awhile.
Thanks! I have a deaf parent and definitely want to check out CODA, happy to hear it holds up :)

what a weird moment... that's what comedians are supposed to do during these events aren't they? poke a little fun at stars?
"Can't wait to see GI Jane 2" doesn't see to rise to the level of the slap imo.
Pretty over the top reaction by Smith to it...he was laughing, but unless Jada started to cry after the camera cut away, that set him off...

As seen on Twitter:
Will Smith’s marriage open to everything except jokes

What a bizzaro night. What irks me the most is Will Smith is essentially staking claim that the ONE, untouchable subject is Jada Pinkett-Smith. No dude, piss off. That's not how this works. Of all years and of all jokes...this is the one that invoked violence and a scene (if real, I don't know what to think anymore nor hardly care). Get outta here Will.

Thanks so much for the detailed breakdown!
I think I'm most interested in Drive My Car and Licorice Pizza, although Worst Person in the World also sounds up my alley.

So Will Smith throws one slap and he's now movin' with his aunty and uncle in Bel Air.
Someone's gotta get that young man under control.

The whole time I was at UM, I only went into Detroit once: to see a Chris Rock concert.
He is one cool customer. He's the guru of staying calm in tense situations. To wit:

I would have been more interested if it had been THE Rock and Will had been thrown across the stage. Of course if it was The Rock that had made the joke, Will would have stayed in his seat.

an oldie but a classic. 'don't drive with an angry woman'....'he got weed!!'
Once. Sad. Your loss.

On your second question, I saw Belfast and liked it a lot. I thought the interplay of a child growing up in a family with violence stirring up around him was well-done, and while my Irish relatives are from parts west and south of Belfast I felt like he got the culture and feel of the place down.
Definitely interested in this one, thanks!

I loved Belfast. Even the camera angles told the story is from the perspective of a nine-year-old.
I know it's semi-autobiographical; it was obvious this was a tribute to how much Branagh loved his parents and grandparents.

I was really surprised by how the media covered the Smith sucker slap. Has our country become so thin skinned that we think slapping a comedian doing a comedic bit is just? So bizarre. If this was at a comedy club, and it wasn’t Will Smith, dude would be spending a night in jail.
oh, and I hated Encanto. Thought it was terrible. Just a bunch of people being mean to one another instead of communicating. Not original or well done. Raya was much better.
after working for 1 year in the Film industry recently, I went away with the utmost respect for the people who make films happen behind the scenes(PAs, costume/set design, editors, sound, etc) and zero respect for the greasy, narcissistic fucks who run the industry.
Thanks for saying that, as my wife is in one of the art department unions and works her ass off, along with her team, to make the movie actually come to life.
Unfortunately I think greasy, narcissistic F*@ks run most industries.
I was wondering what the over/under was going to be coming into this thread where posters had to make it known they don't watch or care about the Oscars, like we already didn't know that about most people here.
Watch the slap at 0.25 speed. Looks like its fake to me all the way. Plus Chris Rock to get hit that hard and not show anything on his face. Plus be able to play it off as if nothing happened seems also fake. If you get hit that hard it's going to rattle your cage a little bit.
Only confusing part for me is Smith looks genuinely mad afterward but then again he is a professional actor.
Was the joke in poor taste, sure I guess?, but I feel zero sympathy for that family/anyone in that gross business. I have heard WAY fuckin worse jokes, but you know...they are freakin comedians and tell jokes for a living.
Future (the rapper) once told the world he did the dirty with Jada with his Gucci slippers on and Will didnt say shit about that did he? Your wife out there telling everyone she is smashing dudes, then a joke like this sets you off? lol, OK Will...you got an interesting world you are living in
You really can get away with anything in Hollywood...the dude walked like 30 yards and still thought it was a good idea.
Honestly, the only Oscar nominated film I think I saw this year was the Attica documentary, which was excellent FWIW.
I saw all the nominated films except the some of the animated films, and documentaries and commented earlier in this thread on the major films, feel free to ask any questions on those.
Really enjoyed the documentary, " The Queen of Basketball" about Lusia "Lucy" Harris Stewart, a pioneer in women's basketball, leading a rural Mississippi college Delta State to three national titles, scoring the first basket in women's Olympic history in 1976, being the first and only woman to be drafted into the NBA. Sadly Lusia just passed away. More info on Lusia after this trivia:
Trivia: Delta State's run of titles followed national championships runs by Immaculata College It was the first Catholic college for women near Philly. A star on those teams is the wife of which Michigan basketball coach.? Well it should be obvious.... Phil Martelli is married to the former Judy Marra, who played on two national championship basketball teams at Immaculata College. In 2014, Marra's Immaculata teams were inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Lusia Harris-Stewart, a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame, was the first dominant player in the modern era in women's basketball. Harris garnered three Kodak All-American honors and was the AIAW tournament MVP three times. She scored the first points in women's Olympic basketball competition, led the United States national team to second place in the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Canada, and even had the honor of being taken in the 1977 National Basketball Association draft by the Utah Jazz.
Harris-Stewart ended her Delta State career with 15 school records, including points scored (2,981), rebounds (1,662) and field goals (1,267). She scored a career-high 58 points in 1975-76, her 58 points against Tennessee Tech, and tallied 47 points against Queens College in Madison Square Garden, which was the most points scored by any man or woman, college or pro, that year in that venue.
Delta State's meteoric rise in the mid-1970's was a tremendous boost for women's basketball and played a huge role in modeling a future for the women's game at the collegiate level. With the introduction of Title IX in 1972 and increased opportunities and resources being allocated to women's sports across the country, the women of the Delta State University women's basketball program proved that there was no reason that they should be afforded fewer opportunities than their male counterparts.
There sure are alot of people who felt the need to tell us that they never watch the Oscars. Besides the air of superiority, who cares?
It was one of those things that was very predictable to read when I came into this thread, was exactly what you described. It's sort of like if there's a thread on something that happened on SNL then every other response will likely be someone proudly declaring that they haven't watched SNL since the days of Chris Farley and Phil Hartman.
Didn’t watch the Oscars show. Preferred watching Michigan-Quinnipiac hockey, the USMNT-Panama CONCACAF World Cup qualifying match and Billions.
Thought that Coda, King Richard and Summer of Soul were great and I was surprised that I liked tick, tick . . . BOOM as much as I did.
Although I enjoyed many of the other films that were nominated for various awards, they aren’t necessarily ones that I’d want to watch again. They include West Side Story (loved the 1961 version when I saw it in a theater during its original run), Dune (recently saw the original for the first time and think this version is much better), The Power of the Dog (almost turned it off after the slow, first 20 minutes, but glad I stuck with it, even though I’d predicted the ending early on), The Lost Daughter (great cast, powerful acting and lots of miserable characters), Being the Ricardos (probably not for fans of Aaron Sorkin’s writing), Don’t Look Up (quirky, funny in parts; might like to see Tyler Perry and Cate Blanchett as co-hosts of another celebrity-interview TV show) and Nightmare Alley (far from my favorite Bradley Cooper film; wasn’t surprised by the twist at the end).
Haven’t seen Belfast, Licorice Pizza, The Tragedy of Macbeth, Spencer, Parallel Mothers and No Time to Die. Planning to watch The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Encanto, Spiderman: No Way Home and Drive My Car later this week.
When both matches were 4-0, I switched over to the Academy awards in time to see the slap. Glad I didn't see the first 17 minutes of the third period. Our habit of leaving the area in front of Portillo wide open, much like the USMNT does against good competition, is too much to handle at times.
The Will Smith and Chris Rock thing was staged. They're actors. Its very likely it was all scripted.

I absolutely loved Belfast. Especially poignant in this current time of loss and mass displacement.

I will withhold judgment until I see what Uncle Phil and Aunt Viv have to say.
