OT: Offseason in review

Submitted by NFG on August 20th, 2019 at 1:32 PM

As we wind down the offseason and head into the 2019 college football season, what is the biggest event that has occurred these past 8 months that we've discussed and why? For example:

-Tiger winning the Masters

-St. Louis Blues winning the Cup

-JB leaving for CLE

-Hiring of Gattis

-Hiring of Howard

-GoT Season 8 being awful

-The rise of media streaming

and more...

For me, it was the introduction of Gattis and how the offense will evolve and Tiger winning a major. Frankly, I though Harbaugh was too engrained in his ways, and that Tiger's back and knee wouldn't allow for him to perform at a high level.

Yeah, I was going to say this myself. Pound for pound, it was the coverage of Michigan baseball up to and including the Finals. Something that historically gets a passing mention around here became THE story on the board for several weeks. That says a lot really.

NBA offseason was ridiculous. Durant, Kyrie, Kawhi, Kemba, D'Angelo Russell, Paul George, Jimmy Butler, Al Horford, Russell Westbrook, Chris Paul and Anthony Davis all changed teams. And there was obviously a lot more than that.

The amount of star power moved and money spent was insane. Not to mention the league looks to have some parity for the first time in a while.

Well, it was another disappointing offseason where neither Tyra Banks or Kate Beckinsale had a threesome with my wife and me. At this point, I'm beginning to think they don't even really want it to happen!

Tiger winning The Masters was one of the best sporting events I have ever seen. I have never felt the feelings I felt watching him those last 6 or so holes in any other sporting event. My father and my girlfriends dad said the same thing, it was one of the greatest sporting moments ever.

I'd say JB leaving for Cleveland and the hiring of Juwan Howard should be counted as one as "Basketball Coaching Change", and would be my #1 by an incredible margin.

My butcher finally started carrying picanha on the regular and a couple weeks ago I smoked a tri-tip that was pretty much life changing, so yeah. That's pretty much the short list for me.

Certainly not the biggest, but losing Chris Evans was still really big from a football perspective. At that moment we all assumed the running back position was fuuuuuuuuuucked

I'm going back and forth between:

Mineral King being Shea or not

Fire Bakich

Will Yak stay or will Yak go

But i'm going to go with Tommy Henry and the Wolverines Baseball squad going to Omaha!

On a personal note, purchasing a chunk of Northern Michigan.

GoT8 may have been disappointing for some people but not for me.

Could it have been better? Yes, but that's a weak standard that perhaps always applies to everything -- though I can acknowledge I risk glossing over the nature of "extent."

Still I'd rather squeeze all the value I can from this philosophy: not simply to "be ok with what one does have and not pine for what you don't" but to shoot for the fences and "love what one does have and don't bother with conceptions of what you don't."

  • Avengers Endgame was freaking awesome
  • MIB aka (Asgardians in Black) International sucked
  • X-Men Phoenix sucked - thank god they are Disney's problem now
  • Lion King was meh, too sterile
  • Spiderman Far From Home was alright and good transition to phase 4 of the MCU
  • Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was really good
  • GoT final season sucked balls
  • Michigan baseball's run was awesome!
  • Beilein leaving sucked donkey balls, but Juwan Howard is here!

The biggest thing now is that all of Detroit pro teams suck! The pistons barely made the playoffs, so it could have been worse for  our pro teams.  The Tigers are years from being any good. The Lions will never be good. There's hope that the wings may start rebuilding enough to make the playoffs in the next year or two. May be the Pistons will keep improving. But overall pro sports in Detroit are quite bleak. Michigan sports is the only thing to get excited about around these parts. Michigan basketball, baseball and football all have great teams.
