OT: NMSU hoops - suspending their hoops team operations
Not that New Mexico State hoops is often talked about here, but this is a story developing this evening that has the potential to turn into a major story. Not often that a program suspends operations for one of their sports teams.
Reportedly, this is SEPARATE from what happened earlier in the season, when one of their basketball players shot and killed a University of New Mexico student the night prior to a game against the Lobos in ABQ.

It’s 2023, people are still doing that? Is Richard Nixon still President?

Umm, do we really think kids these days are more mature than they were in the 60s and 70s?

They're dumber now, because they film everything.

If older generations had camera phones, they would have filmed everything too.

If that isn't a "lack of institutional control," I don't know what is.

shooting and hazing your students isn't even a level II violation with the NCAA. you haven't lost control until you've lost track of that $10 brown jug tip. then the NCAA comes after you.

I have a friend who's an alum of NMSU. He alerted me to the earlier unrelated incident. (It was splashed all over the sports sites and I would've eventually heard about it.) If you're bored and have some spare time this morning, it's pretty complicated. Here's one of many articles on it:

New Mexico State Police Officer Dusty Francisco confirmed Friday that on Nov. 30 the agency seized the phones of head coach Greg Heiar, assistant coach Dominique Taylor and players Issa Muhammad, Anthony Roy and Marchelus Avery.
"Dusty Francisco" wins the prize for greatest western cop name in modern history. He needs to be the lead singer of a 70s tribute band or something.

Yeah its pretty crazy, even crazier is almost all of the incidents are on video. There is a big fight post game outside of an UNM arena where a UNM student gets teamed up on and beat pretty good by multiple NMSU basketball players, including laying into him while hes curled up on the ground.
Student who got whooped makes a revenge plot and ends up having a female friend lure the NMSU bball player to campus. They approach him with 3 guys, a gun & a bat and eventually a fire fight breaks out where the UNM student is shot dead and NMSU bball player has a bullet in the leg.
Fuckin a.

Jeez, if it’s not the University of New Mexico basketball program flagrantly engaging in academic fraud, it’s New Mexico State basketball players hazing and killing people.

Must be something in the water out there.

I think they just believe Mr Burns is running the NCAA

Recommended: The Later career section of the Ellenberger Wikipedia page. I saw Nimrod Nation many years ago and looked up "Coach Norm" afterward. I was reminded of him a few years later when former Schembechler assistant Elliot Uzelac became Benton Harbor's coach in his mid-70s.
