if I wasn't also a Michigan fan, I'd wish this on them so they could see the consequences of their idiocy..Some guys look like they need to have a meet-up with "The Ghost of Football Yet To Come.".

get the front of house in order for a real coaching search? they had a new gm last year and i imagine a lot of turnover in the front office. plus Mrs. Ford liked Caldwell so i think he got a 1 year reprieve due to the incoming GM shuffling things around.

Stoopid, uninformed comment. She's already proven herself far more capable than WCF ever did. It was time for Caldwell to go, and she let it happen - as she should have. No chance WCF would have allowed it...

I'll give Quinn credit for being fairly forthright about his decision to can Caldwell though - he talked about the record against teams with a pulse, moments in certain games, underutilized picks, and some other things, even if in roundabout terms at times. I took it as a sign that he has the latitude to do what he feels he needs, which considering who still owns this team is a plus.

I gotta give some credit to Martha Ford, too. Yes, I know anyone named Ford is the favorite pinata of the Detroit sports market. But let's face it: she's been a damn sight quicker on the trigger than her late husband was. If WCF were still here, Martin Mayhew would probably still be in the GM chair. (Think of how many years that absolute mediocrity Russ Thomas was GM, and how long Matt Millen was allowed to ruin this team.)
She might not have all the football savvy in the world, but she allowed her GM to fire a coach who just posted back-to-back 9-7 seasons. Under the previous Ford, that coach probably gets an extension - but not under this Ford. Unlike her husband, she isn't infected with the same crippling loyalty to mediocre employees.
Come to think of it, maybe Harbaugh could take a page from her book.

I didn't dig really deep into this, but I believe the Caldwell "extension" turned out to be just a 1 year deal with team options after that. So everyone thought it was an extension (because all the reporters/insiders said so) and it turned out that it was not the case. Honestly, if this was in fact the case, its a great job by the Lions. Because everyone thought it was an extension there was never any talk/hot-takes about what would happen at the end of the season . . . at least until they blew their playoffs hopes.

The Lions havent finished 8-8 since 1999. And the Jeff Fisher joke is about going 7-9.

Well, the Lions supposedly are interested in Matt Patricia, so there you go.
January 2nd, 2018 at 5:42 PM ^
When you look at the previous coordinators, I don't think they went to stable front offices. The Browns (Crennel) are a mess and Denver (McDaniels) was in a transitional period as well. If McDaniels or Patricia ends up in Detroit, at least they will have a friendly face in the GMs office.
I don't know what NYG's front office will look like, but being handed OBJ, Evan Engram, Eli and the #2 pick in the draft isn't bad. I'm pretty sure McDaniels would love to go to New York in hopes they draft Barkley. That offense would be pretty good on Day 1.

I like McDaniels for the Lions gig due to Stafford being there. He is widely considered a great offensive mind.
January 2nd, 2018 at 9:27 PM ^
McDaniels was an absolute train wreck of his own doing in Denver, front office aside. He wasn't ready to be the top guy back then. I hope he's changed for the better, by now...

then I moved to Cincinnati. The Bengals are 10 times worse!
Not all change results in progress. But progress rarely happens without change. Mike Brown, however, views "change" as something to be avoided in nearly ALL situations. Thus, there's never any progress!

This was the case in Detroit under WCF. They did go 0-16 before Cleveland made it fashionable... Martha changed that really quick.

I don't think Marvin Lewis is the problem in Cincinnati. I just don't know who the GM is that keeps drafting these headcases.
January 2nd, 2018 at 5:57 PM ^
I am a fan of a franchise run by a complete idiot. Only in Cleveland could somebody preside over a 1-31 record (and the only win came because of TWO missed FGs by the Chargers last year in the final two minutes of play) AND BE BROUGHT BACK FOR ANOTHER YEAR.
If you watched the Browns at all this year (and God help you if you did) you would've seen coaching malpractice that Rich Kotite would've laughed at. Botched two minute drills, having a rookie QB throw the third most passes in the NFL (with most of them ending up either intercepted or on the turf) and having his DC align our own Jabrill Peppers somewhere between 30 yards OFF the LOF and the planet Saturn. My 13 year old playing Madden could do better.
And yet today at his final presser for the year Hue Jackson PLAYED THE VICTIM. Claimed that nobody else could do what he did (and he said it in way meaning for the good) and that he deserved to come back as wonderful of a job as he did. One couragous reporter pressed him on naming ONE accomplishment this year, ONE player who showed improved and Hue said "I dont want to talk about that now.". The guy is an idiot who looks in the mirror and sees Vince fucking Lombardi.
So I do NOT want to hear anybody complain, bitch, moan or anything else about your respective NFL HC. Or as we like to say around here....
"Who has it better than us? - EVERYFUCKINGBODY IN THE WHOLE FUCKING WORLD."

LMAO - I feel your pain, and I do feel bad for Browns fans. (No, really - I do!!!) I mean, just last year, Detroit legit owned that 'worst ever coach/GM in the history of ever' combo. Rod Moronelli paired with Matt Millen... But man, 1-31 in two years... Damn!!
That said, I still think Detroit has an arguement in this controversy. The Lions never had 5 first round draft picks in two years. Something to be said for the Browns GM, there!

I hate being a bengals fan. Not much worse than being stuck in Ohio where everyone around you is an OSU fan and the 2 teams you root for can't win a meaningful game.
