OT: New App Lets You Avoid Commercials During Games

Submitted by Charlie Bucket on

I'm a long time MGoBoard memeber and UofM grad. My buddy and I designed and developed an app, SportFlip, to help users avoid commercials during games. Just tell us whcih games you're watching, and we'll send you real-time notifications as soon as the game starts, returns from commercial break and ends. Perfect for flipping between games during the Tournament. It's free to download and use and is availiable in the App Store via the link below. Please let me know if you have any questions or feedback. Thanks!

You can use it with streaming, but the notifications might come a little early. My only hesitation is that the notifications might include score spoilers. We talked about making a setting where a user could indicate that they were watching online, but decided against it becasue there's no reliable way to know how much of delay there is versus linear.

Can you build in a feature where the end user can self calibrate by indicating when you’re back from commercial break? The app Tunity allows you to do this (syncs live tv audio to a tv you are watching where you can’t hear the audio stream). Allowing the end user to influence the time your notifications come in would seem to be an easy, logical fix that can account for many differences in streaming delays.

Great concept. Have you looked into any potential liability you could be exposed to for profiting off of undermining the TV business model? Did TiVo already go through that?
