OT: ND OL graduate transfer

Submitted by YoungGeezy on

ND Offensive lineman Matt Hegarty, who started 11 games last season after recovering rom a 2012 stroke, has decided to transfer after graduating in May. From his comments, it looks like Brian Kelly is looking to give his staring spot to someone else:

"They also explained that with many younger players in the wings, they wanted to develop them more heavily in the rotation -- a need that I understand and appreciate."

I'm not sure if we would try to snag him and add to our OL depth or not, but given his experience, I hope we entertain it. Especially if there's impending attrition we haven't heard about yet. Even if we don't go after him, he's an impressive young man.

A. Why buy into any hype you hear out of spring? It's only natural to rave about guys you haven't seen play in a while, so everyone looks like an all-American to observers. B. The kid's a junior. Linemen more than anybody take time to develop. Not everyone is Jake Long, Hutch or Lewan and looks great out of the gate.

However Braden couldn't beat out a true freshman last year! That tells you all you need to know. The previous staff was notorious for giving starting positions to upperclassmen solely because they were older p. So just through common sense, how poor must Braden be that even Hoke and co couldn't justify him playing over Cole? Just something to think about

Was trolling or even false. Everything I've stated is either fact or at the very least commonly acknowledged and accepted by Michigan fans and this board. If you could point to a particular point you disagree with and would like to discuss I would be happy to do so

that you're unaware that Braden started last year. I'm sure you're also unaware that he was never talked about as a potential LT. I doubt you know very much about our team at all.

You've made consistent posts running down him and all of the other lineman in a hyperbolic manner consistent with trolling. Combine that with an obvious lack of knowledge of the team = troll.

I am actually very knowledgeable about our team outside of who started on the o-line the past few years. There's been so much switching and different starters on a week-to-week basis with that group that I was confused. My original post alluded to the group as a whole and when Braden got brought up I latched onto him. So I apologize. However my original point still stands: wed greatly benefit from this transfer. Here's a guy that started 11 games for a team that typically pulls in lots of talent and the unit has been an absolute mess the last 2 years. We'd benefit enormously if he were to join

Braden started at RT...where he is a better fit anyway. He is a big, road-grading tackle. Which is what most teams employ out at RT. LT is more reserved for a pass blocker to protect the QB's blind-side. I think Braden was a solid starter. Honestly, they all were solid. Gardner made the OL look worse than they were. He held onto the ball for far too long and made poor decisions with the ball. How many times when most QB's would throw the ball away, did Gardner run backwards and lose an extra 10 yards? Nobody feared his arm and teams blitzed Michigan like crazy as a result. As far as the running game goes, Green averaged 5.7 yards a carry, Smith averaged 4.8 yards a carry, and Johnson averaged 6.0 yards a carry. Point being, they flat out produced for the running backs. Now give them another off season with an OL coach as highly regarded as Drevno and they will be even better next year. It wasn't a great Michigan offensive line, but it was much better than people make it out to be.

You obviously are a novice when it comes to offensive line. The offensive line improved a bunch as the season went on and should actually be a strength this year based on experience and continuity. Many of these guys were highly regarded and recruited by some of the best programs in the country. Hoke and staff had a very difficult time developing guys, something that this staff is notorious for. I'd be happy to bring on any good players for depth purposes, but in this case I'm not sure we really need him.

I throw up a little in my mouth when I read that ND and Brian Kelly can afford such luxury...

I only wish the worst on this program and I will never forget how they treated the murder and the rape.

It's certainly something that ND isn't proud of, but you're not getting any of the facts straight. It was not a murder, it was a suicide. It was not rape (Seeburg even admitted it wasn't), it was sexual assault. Shembo touched her breasts. They did not have sex. Seeburg never claimed they did. Shembo denies touching her breast. I typically side with the victim in these cases, and I do with Seeburg.

You can criticize Notre Dame's campus security on how they handled the case if you wish (and I do...), but at least get the facts about the case straight. But, in all honesty, I'm not sure Michigan fans want to throw rocks at ND for players committing sexual assault.
