OT: NBA Trades (McCollum, Sabonis, Haliburton on the move)

Submitted by JMo on February 8th, 2022 at 2:02 PM

A couple mid-level NBA trades going on today in the leadup to the NBA trade deadline.

First up, CJ McCollum to the Pelicans.

Next, Sabonis and others to Kings for Haliburton and Hield

Hopefully this is just the start of an eventful NBA Trade Deadline.

I know it's crazy, but I like the NBA and soccer....and I'll get in on an F1 or a rugby post too if someone wants to throw that out there. I mean, I'm watching Snowboard Cross right now after some curling, fergodsakes.  Let's get crazy with these non-football sports. Aren't these posts literally what OT is for ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I partially agree. Harden for Simmons makes little sense for either team. Assuming Kyrie decides to make himself available for home games, or NYC changes its rules, I think Simmons + healthy KD + 100% available Kyrie = Eastern Conference Champs. In this scenario, Nets >>> Sixers.  But there's a lot of "ifs." I think the Sixers are being foolish if they're putting all of their eggs in the Harden basket. Based on it being 2022, not 2016, I'd target Beal over Harden.

Beal's game and his age make a potential partnership with Embiid enticing. That duo could win a championship and potentially several championships if they're surrounded by the right pieces.

Technically, neither Harden nor Beal are "available," but that shouldn't stop the Sixers from targeting either one of them considering they both could be free agents this offseason.

To bring it back to Michigan, the Pacers traded Caris to the Cavs for Ricky Rubio and picks.  Cavs need ball handling, so Caris will probably have a big role on a playoff team.

LOL this is how you're going to go here? Bursley's bringing up a 3 day old trade involving a Michigan player is ALL you needed to allow this thread to pass through the "Monocle Smile" seal of OT validity?  Basically you want your off-topic threads to be on-topic?

My thoughts? Keep posting! This board needs more comedians (unintentional or not)!

I'm shocked the Kings were willing to move Haliburton for a package headlined by Sabonis. Haliburton's ceiling is very high. I think he can become a perennial All-Star, and soon. Sabonis is a fringe all-star 4/5 'tweener, and I like his game, but he's unlikely ever going to be central piece on a championship team.

It's confusing. It was reported that the Kings wouldn't trade Haliburton as part of a Ben Simmons deal. But now they're willing to include him for Sabonis? I'd take Simmons, even with all his flaws (shooting and mental) over Sabonis any day.

I guess part of the question then comes down to, do you think they could have gotten the same deal by swapping in Fox for Haliburton to the package?

I don't disagree with your overall premise about Haliburton over Fox, but they play the same basic "usage playmaker" position and there was never enough ball for both of them. One of them had to go.

If they can get the best set of talent for Haliburton, maybe Fox can turn it around?  He's super athletic. He's not a complete waste.  Maybe Darius Garland isn't the PERFECT example... but he's a guy who took a few years to really turn it around. (Granted this is pretty optimistic for Fox and it's been more than a few years now.)

Personally, not a Kings fan but I'll be curious to see how this team does. I like Holiday a lot. Sabonis is a fun player when healthy. The Kings are young.

Honestly, the whole mystery of everything to me is what Indiana is doing. A complete tear down?

Thompson was one of the guys who actively worked to run John B out Cleveland. His talents were FAR too advanced to be coached by some old college guy.

I'm happy to see Tristan Thompson continue to fail everywhere he's been minus two seasons when he played with Lebron.

I have no idea what Sacramento is trying to do here.  Like, Sabonis is a good player but that's a lot to give up for him.

Also, poor damn Dame is going to be dust in 2 years when the Blazers may actually be competitive again.

As a Pistons fan, I'm torn on Grant.

On one hand, he can get you a LOT of equity for the future. He's a very talented, still pretty young player that can be a great #2 or #3 option on championship-level teams when he's not asked to be the primary ball handler or have the offense run through him. I guarantee a lot of the top-flight teams are putting calls into Detroit to see what it would take to grab him.

On the other hand, with all those positive things I've said about him: why not keep him here? He's a great player that you can keep, he seems to enjoy playing here (hasn't been very public about wanting to leave), good team guy, etc. I would not be mad at all if he stuck around.

The Pistons are doing it the right way. Cade is looking great, and they will be adding another top 3 pick to pair him with. You could have a top 3 with Cunningham, Grant, and 2022 draft.

Something about Holmgren scares me, and I can't quite pinpoint it. I get the Dirk comparisons, but Dirk was a STRONG dude. Holmgren is an absolute string bean- he's gotta put on like 40 lbs. I really like Banchero as well.

I think Killian is just not going to be a great guard, unfortunately. It's not that he's a bad shooter. He's an awful shooter. Teams are literally just standing off the three point line and watching him take horrible shots.
