You’re name is Toby Flenderson. I figured you’d get it, nerd
You mean the people who have been correct for 6+ decades? Yes so annoying.
“If I had a gun, with two bullets, and I was in a room with Hitler, Bin Laden, and Toby, I would shoot Toby twice."
Yes, Brad Holmes is responsible for drafting Mike Williams. Riveting.

This is just peak Loins.

My question is how is the NFL able to track who is betting on what and where? This is a very specific allegation that would indicate very close electronic monitoring by NFL spooks. Techies with far greater knowledge than me can weigh in please.

Most likely got the data and the geolocation from the gambling companies themselves. Would be my guess.

You'd think after 65 years of mediocrity, they would have exhausted all reasons to lose football games, but they keep finding new ones!

I'm sure these players were made well aware of the rules regardless of anyone thinking they are petty or not. That's one expensive lesson when you figure that Williams probably just lost a third of his salary for the year.
Certainly they were being constantly reminded of the rules related to gambling and the consequences. It's not like the rules were complex or hard to interpret. It's not as though they were being told they couldn't do something important They foolishly made the decision to break the rules assuming they wouldn't get caught. I can't work up any sympathy for them.

This is legitimately asinine. The NFL partners with gambling sites FFS. If they were betting on or against the Lions during the season or for futures bets (like total wins), then that's an issue. This is a NON-issue and strikes me as totally stupid. And yes, I would say so if they weren't Lions players.
And six games??? C'mon man.....
April 21st, 2023 at 12:38 PM ^
Six games is ridiculous now that the league is actively promoting gambling---and making hundreds of millions from it. Games out hurts the team more, so if anything hit him with a big fine and fewer games.
For a first time offense, there's no reason they couldn't have suspended him for 1 game and/or just given him a fine. Looks like the league is trying to send a message. I wonder if the 6 games will be appealed and maybe reduced.

Guy barley played last season not sure this is that big of a loss but...This is one of the dumbest rules especially when NFL stadiums are adding betting areas into their stadiums.
April 21st, 2023 at 12:38 PM ^
Two of the guys are fringe players, one is a special teamer, and then JaMo.
Lions have to look at WR in first two rounds now. Probably were anyways, but doubt has to be creeping in about JaMo’s maturity.
Contrary to the histrionics some are displaying this isn’t a killer. Lions have time to find a guy to fill Williams spot. Good thing this happened before the draft.
With how the offense played last year minus Williams I still think the defense has to be the focus in the first 2 rounds (3/4 picks). That said if a talented WR drops to us now we probably have to take him.

Unreal. Only the Lions could have this shizz happen. Over many decades they have a ridiculous combination of terrible decision making and weird, bad luck.
That said, I frankly never liked the trade up to draft Jameson and it looks even worse now.

Aside from stating the NFL are total hypocrites. WR just shot up the priority ladder for the Lions in next weeks draft. Do they take JSN now at 18 if he is there?
April 21st, 2023 at 12:49 PM ^
The thing is that they need a speed guy to go with St. Brown. JSN is a slot guy like St. Brown. Jones and Reynolds don’t have much speed. Raymond does, but he is more a 4/5 WR.
The dolphins have two short fast guys in tyreek hill and jaylen waddle…..doesn’t seem to impede their offense any….I think Ben Johnson could work JSN into his offensive game plan very nicely
JSN probably won't be there, besides they need an "X" receiver. The first opportunity for one @ 18 will most likely be Quinten Johnston if they decide to go that high to grab one. The Lions have already met with him so it's a possibility.
I agree but I would love a JSN Amon double slot WR package. JSN played with 3 NFL WRs and 1 just won rookie of the year and another was nearly just as good and another will be a top 10 pick next year and yet I fear JSN the most. Feel he is gonna tear up the league and people forgot what he could do since he was out last year.
Yeah a rookie WR is gonna help Lions so much for 6 games.
If they have the talent and desire, a WR will impact the game more immediately than most positions.
the lions need talented WRs to keep this offense rolling. Trotting out MJJ as a starter is a nonstarter
No, they trade for D'Andre Hopkins
Over the hill.
Rather they keep the youth movement going and draft one. Let them all grow together

These suspensions were brought to you by Draft Kings, official betting partner of the NFL.
I wonder what the penalty would be if - they bet on the Lions to both win a game and cover the spread.
I've never understood the fascination with sports gambling. Going to the casino I can understand. Soak up some atmosphere, have a good time and try to make a quick buck. But if I had extra millions like these guys, I would be in the market having some real fun.
Welp, that sucks. Is it just me, or is this an insanely harsh penalty for something that I wonder why it is even an infraction?
They should be ready and well rested for a long playoff run.
So the NFL views betting on NFL games as a far worse crime than sexually assaulting 24 women. Pretty standard NFL behavior
Yeah, though ... one potentially threatens the long-term economic credibility -- and thus viability -- of the league, and one doesn't. I don't think anyone at the NFL would reach the conclusion you're accusing them of on a personal level. But in terms of what threatens the league more? Yeah, the risk of players throwing games is much worse.
See also: Alex Karras and Paul Hornung.
Of course. It's just amusing to view the world through the moral compass of the NFL. Basically rule #1, don't hurt our profits. Rule #2, you can be a dirtbag if you're good enough at football. Maybe we'll throw a token suspension at you so we don't get a PR hit
I'm starting to get some really bad feeling about Williams working out for the Lions.
Kids got loads of athleticism and talent but I'm not sure he's got the discipline. Rules might be stupid but it's also really stupid to break them when you're a guy that was traded up for and got paid to miss basically your whole first year and now (pending possible appeal) you're going to miss the first 6(!) games on a team that for the first time in forever is poised to compete for a division title? That's a bad look man. Through your first year and a half he'll have like 3 games under his belt.
Combine that with some of the comments from Holmes like this:
"Jameson also has to hold his part and make sure he's doing everything he needs to do," Holmes said of Williams in March. "So it's always accountability factor on both sides."
Not sure Williams is going to work out on this team.
That Holmes quote was more than likely after Brad and the front office knew of the betting violations. But still... Jamo is off to a horrible start with the team.
Agreed. Further disappointed that Williams didn't even bother to create a statement himself. Had his "team" do it for him and in third person. Shows me he doesn't think he did anything wrong, which absent the rules of the NFL I'd agree... it seems like a somewhat stupid rule, but he's got too much invested in him and he has delivered far to little at this point be have the luxury of not caring. If this had been something that happened to Calvin Johnson, I'd be team benefit of the doubt all day long but Williams is a guy who was traded up for and has delivered 1 catch and 3 drops and not much else on a team that needs talent.
Not a good look bruh.
It's a simple rule. And unless I'm wrong, one fully agreed-to by the NFLPA -- it wasn't forced upon anyone. The argument that if the rule you agreed to as a fully-negotiated contractual term is stupid you don't have to follow it doesn't hold much water, in my opinion.
Whoops, wrong content!
Honestly, It wouldn’t surprise me if they take JSN or Jalin Hyatt in the first two days to keep the offense on track through those first 6 games (as well as being future Jamo insurance…..or replacement)………..ARSB can’t do it all himself and I can’t see MJJ or Josh Reynolds being go-to guys for this offense….
Jamo has shown us glimpses of what he could be when he’s on the field……..he just can’t get out of his own way right now
The 1 catch was awesome. The 3 drops quite a bit less so.
Well, I guess that closes the door on Jalen Carter.
(joking, kinda...) I wish he would have only sexually assaulted someone, the suspension wouldn't have been so long. The NFL is disgusting for letting gambling on something entirely unrelated to the NFL receive greater consequences than sexual assaults
Can't prove it yet. However, I have a gut feeling this was Okudah's fault.
Are we ever going to get a full season out of this guy? Sheesh....
On another note, doesn't the NFL have a deal with FanDuel promoting gambling on their own games?
Dumbass NFL hypocrisy.
