OT: MGoFeelingsball - Things that make you cry
Since there's nothing going on today I think is an original idea for an OT thread.
I've never been much of a crier, even as a kid. I can count on my hands the number of times I've shed tears as an adult, and when it has happened no one saw it. Not my wife or my kids.
So imagine my 16 year old daughter's surprise when she looked at the seat next to her in Hill Auditorium and saw her dad sobbing like a 3 year old that was just punched in the face and then told Santa wasn't real. She has never once seen me cry and I freaked her the fuck out by doing it.
So there it is. Handel's Messiah makes me cry like a little bitch.
What about you? A certain scene in a movie? A dog food commercial? Finding out that you were adopted? What makes MGoBloggers shed some tears?
Always available to add some perspective.
Always available to overcompensate
My manhood is "slightly below average" which I am ok with. Could be worse.
Let's see...
Pretty much anything involving my kids
Anything that has to do with children or animals or innocent people suffering
Sad, powerful, or brilliant works of music and art
Stories of sacrifice, love, bravery, or heartbreak
Moments I stop and contemplate how lucky I am to have certain people in my life
...And of course, that bite of sushi that comes with an unexpectedly big chunk of wasabi that you swear is much hotter than usual today
A spring breeze while I'm trying to putt. The older I get, the easier my eyes water.
- End of A Beautiful Mind
- YouTube mashup vid of reactions to Landon Donovan's game winning goal vs. Algeria
- The J-Mac story
- Saying goodbye to seniors at the end of their last practice
- When Rachel kisses Ross after watching the video of him trying to take her to prom
The Green Mile. Every. Damn. Time.
Even though that hug is not in the book.
As an aside, I think the movie was significantly better than the book.
Haven't read the book in a long time, and have seen the movie something like 20 times, so perhaps that says it all, but I may have to read it again to make sure how much better the movie is. I remember enjoying the novella/book.
but the end of Godfather 3 is pretty sad. I watched the series again last week and my wife watched it with me for the first time. Not the greatest movie, but I still enjoy it. After his daughter gets shot and they show him all alone in a field reflecting on his life. Earlier in the movie he is talking with his mom about men being strong for their families and asks "Is it possible that by trying to be strong for them...you could end up losing them?" Just thinking about how he never wanted in the business, got involved to protect his father and how after awhile all he wanted to do was go legitimate and protect his family. He ended up the exact person he didn't want to be. His biggest fear... losing his family, became reality. And he dies old and alone in a field.
The song it what drove it home (by Neil Young btw). Should have won an Oscar instead of Streets of Philadelphia.

I saw that on its opening weekend. You know how very often the audience will applaud and the end of a good movie? This time, there wasn't one clap. The only sounds were a lot of sniffing from elderly men (many of whom had gone through that hell), and the sounds of their wives rummaging through their purses, trying to find him a Kleenex.
And I heard one old man coming up the aisle mumble, "Yeah, that's what it was like."
When Tim McGraw gives his son his old state championship ring...
Yeah, that got me, too. It surprised me cuz he was such a dick throughout the movie.
Yeah, that gets me.
I'll add Bridge to Terabithia from childhood.
I couldn't believe how deeply affected I was by that.
Oh lord, Jurassic Bark is such a sad episode. I thought that they'd just unfreeze him and surprise a dog would be a part of the crew. But no we get to sit and watch this scruffy little dog sit in the cold and wait for his master to finally come home, which is truly hopeless.
Very similar to Hachi, talk about feels....
How could something I love so much destroy someone's life
RIDE FOR RUIN AND THE WORLD'S ENDING
The ending of "What You Pawn I Will Redeem" by Sherman Alexie. The line, "Do you know how many good men live in this world?" Given what has happened in the story up to that point I just lose it every time. This even happens in class when I'm analyzing the text with my students.

any video of a solider coming home and surprising his/her kids and I have to look around for who is cutting onions

The picture of Mickey Mouse consoling a crying Kermit the Frog. Some Disney artists made it as a tribute after Jim Henson died. I call it cry porn.
You're talking about this picture
Which reminds me of this picture
SERIOUS?!?! hahahaha, good one, quality thread.
and the end of "Into The Wild". Probably my favorite movie
The ending never fails to choke be up.
Also the final scene in Band of Brothers on the baseball field. Whatever happened to them after their service they still were forever connected from their travails as warriors.
Band of Brothers ruins me. It's just so good.
Although tecnically it's a series, I think it's the best war film.
I forgot about that ending. The son walking up the hill to the house will the dog ahead of him. Chills just thinking about it.
Being a father and seeing how fast they grow up. Never ever be too tired to tuck in your little ones at the end of the day.
And being a dad to a daughter, Father of the Bride.
6 years ago, I am S.O.F.T. Follow that up with my son being born, and I am crying softy. Chad Carr's battle and the Chad Tough videos still bring a tear. Anything child related that hits the heart strings will leave me red eyed.
MasterChef, when the contestants get surprised by their loved ones, especially if it involves an adorable child or baby.
I punch my hand through glass afterwards so the universe balances out.
There are several episodes of The West Wing which get me every time.
"In Excelsis Deo" comes to mind right away...The Christmas episode from season 1 when Toby's coat and card are found on the body of a homeless person.
And Mrs. Landingham, standing there with her coat on, thinking of her dead sons, saying "Toby ... I'd like to come along."
Yup. That'll do it.
Good Will Hunting is a great movie. The scene that actually gets me is Will going off on Skylar while telling the truth about his past...
Yeah that's a great scene too. The whole movie is fantastic and even more powerful now that Robin Williams is gone. He was tremendous in it.
That scene in Field of Dreams where Moonlight Graham steps over the foul line. Just thinking about it gives me the dusty onions.
