OT - The Masters Open Thread

Submitted by ijohnb on

Promises to be a slow day on the Board.  I would assume this will stay up for a good portion of the day and can just serve as a Masters commentary thread for those watching.

So far there has been a Tiger Woods no-show, a very moving ceremonial first tee dedication to Arnold Palmer, and a very random "super athletic - hyper coordinated - favorite to win the Masters guy - falls down the stairs and injures his back incident(?)" that I am sure won't result in any rumor or speculation as to what may have caused said fall.

Golf needs a player like Dustin Johnson at this point as a sport still trying to forge a new identity post Tiger.  He was starting to gain traction as the "big draw." Would be a tough weekend for the game if he can't play.

Wide open field at this point though.  Could make for some compelling theatre.

of the funnier things I have ever seen in a golf tournament was John Daly lighting a cigarette while talking with an Open Championship rules official a couple of years ago.  There is a guy who has just decided that he is not crazy about the current "rules" and has decided to create some new ones for himself to live by.

Sounds like Dj is going to tee it up today.  Even if he is able to get through today and tomorrow I find it hard to believe he will be able to everything he normally does.  Wouldn't be surprised at all to see him miss the cut.

Lefty and Rickie are both off to real nice starts!

They said it on Live from the Masters this morning.  They didn't give any updates to exactly how he is feeling, they just said he will be teeing off as planned and is highly unlikely to withdraw.  However, he could get to the practice range and after hitting a few shots realize he can't do  it and withdraw at that time but as of now he is expected to play.

Thanks.  Good to know.

In all honesty though, this is really an odd development.  He is a guy with a notable and publicized substance abuse history.  All of the sudden he is the talk of the town and the favorite to win the Masters and the unquestionable headliner.  He also is a fairly new dad and has a father-in-law who probably considers greatness to be fairly routine.  That sounds like quite a bit of pressure.

I know that nobody will want to ask that question but I think there may be an empty wagon rolling around somewhere near Augusta right now.

It is a very odd development indeed.  They actually discussed that a bit this morning but it sounds like the incident happened less than an hour after he got back to the house from the course.  Obviously a lot can be done in an hour and I'm sure there will be a lot of questioning going on but hopefully this actually was just a bad luck incident.  I like DJ and he is a lot of fun to watch.

Reported earlier today that he fell down 3 stairs while playing with his son. It definitely seems possible that this is just a freak accident at an unfortunate time for him.

Blows my mind people can watch golf. Can't judge others since it's just opinion and taste, but makes no sense.

does make sense if you are a fan of the game.  For people who really love golf, it is an all encompassing affection.  I love golf, golf courses, golf clothes, golf sounds, the glistening dew on the ground in early morning.  For people who really love the game we are not just watching the mechanics of the guys hitting the ball repetitively, we are looking at the course, the hats, the clubs, all of it.  And it is a sight to behold.

I'm with you on this.

There is just something about golf courses. They're so relaxing and peaceful.

of golf courses.  I have seen Augusta look considerably better than it does right now.  I mean, it still looks world class but you can tell it has not been ideal weather down there for course management at this stage of the year.  It looks a little patchy right now.

Understandable. It stormed there yesterday. I'm sure that fucked up a lot of the beauty. They will get it fixed for the remaining days, though. It's supposed to be nothing but sunny on Saturday and Sunday.

I have a cousin with a country club membership and he golfs just about every day during the summer.  He keeps trying to get me to join his club, but the whole atmosphere is just off-putting for me.  The place is literally all 50+-old white dudes except for the wait staff and the beer cart girls.  Every time I go there, it's like time travelling back to the 50s.

I realize public courses are more diverse, but it feels like a sport that is in serious need of some kind of marketing campaign to bring in young people.

Ive never seen a million dollar hand of bridge or euchre on tv. Ive also never seen someone bluff someone out of a million dollars in bridge or euchre.

You obviously dont have a handle on how gambling works.

think that most of us understand how it works but are really not that fascinated by it.  Most of those guys you watch on ESPN Ocho are degenerates who rotate between buying drinks for the bar and calling their grandmothers to get a few bucks "just to get back on their feet"  They aren't that interesting.

who spent their days playing golf and drinking. Whats the difference?

Its just as uninteresting watching a guy hit a ball around a golf course, as it is watching a guy play cards. About the only interesting thing to happen to golf in my lifetime was the emergence of a black man dominating the trust fund country club dicks.

Its when you miss the cut of a tournament but have paid for four days at the resort, so you have 48 hours to drink before leaving town.

of your sentence so your sentence structure really only makes sense if the reader assumes the subject of the sentence also paid for the room, otherwise . . . . oh forget it.

Will you shut up and quit arguing every fucking post like a kid if we all just admit golf blows and you're the most epic-est tour poker player of forver all time?

Do you always just read the last sentence someone writes, or do you take into account the entire argument, and everything someone has said up to this point.

If you were to start taking into account the entirety of someones argument, we wouldnt have to get bogged down in the minutae of every little point.

I could care less if any of you agree with me or not. Im bored and at work, and this is a way more entertaining way to lose points than a neg bang.

Also once again, if reading my original post with your critical thinking cap on, you would see i was making the point that not liking golf on tv doesnt make you a millenial like Dopeman assertained. Then i acknowledged that i watch something others probably find boring with a verbal cue "that being said", as well as acknowledging it wasnt an actual sport by calling it a "sport".

Any of the criticisms that followed by the lynch mob around here were already implied in my original statement.

Exactly. After reading his comments, his tone just smells like jealousy. He's probably the type of person who thinks profits should be donated/shared and the rich should always donate to charity simply because they can (which is a bull shit thing to think, by the way).

The trust fund comment was in reply to him classifying all gamblers as alchoholic degenrates.

Seriously, i thought you were all supposed to be college educated gentlemen. Did they stop teaching critical thinking and reading skills or something?

Or do you always read one sentence of a persons paragraph, and attack accordingly?

my comment.  The fact of the matter is numerous current golfers were poor/lower class.

You refusing to believe that doesn't make you correct.  Also, as a matter of fact, I named 4 current players on that list, without googling.

And WTF is "thanks for playing?"  If we were playing anything, I just won because I proved your asinine assumption incorrect.

EDIT:  If you include Stadler, who still plays on the Champions Tour, I named 5 current players without using google.  I win extra.  You Lose.  Good day sir.

the rules better than anyone else seated at the table if you take your job seriously.

Also if you were to google the top 100 ranked poker players in the world, i assure you about 30% of them were dealers at some point.

Its a great way to learn to read players without wagering any money.
