OT: Iowa's Jordan Bohannon Honors the late Chris Street

Submitted by GRBluefan on

Really cool story out of Iowa about how Jordan Bohannon took an opportunity to honor the late Hawkeye great Chris Street.  Seems like Iowa is the place to go for these days for feel good stories, between this and the Wave.  I checked the board and didn't see this posted.

Positive stories on a Monday are always a good idea, regardless of how far OT it may be.

EDIT: This story isn't far OT. I meant in general, way OT stories on a Monday would be ok by me. I guess that's why I read FARK so much on Monday.

This is super cool. With all the turmoil currently going on college basketball, its especially nice to see moments like this. Seeing this level of respect is really refreshing.

that this was incredibly selfless. With what seems like the majority of players focusing on their own stats, it was very nice to see someone think of somebody other than themself. Great story

I hope the Stanford band of rich smart-ass kids feels at least a little bad for the way they used their halftime show to belittle Iowa people in the Rose Bowl a couple of years ago.

It was pretty classless really.

Yeah, edgy Stanford band and all, but there is a time and place.  You don't have to stick a finger in everyone's eye at every single possible opportunity.  Especially people that don't deserve it.

Great story! Love it when people aren't too caught up in the present to remember those who have gone before.

Too bad Iowa is on our side of the bracket, otherwise I'd wish them a B1G Tournament run.

Cool story, and it may be the first time that Iowa actually missed a shot in memory of Chris Street.  If I recall correctly, in 1993, Michigan rolled into Iowa City shortly after the accident and a somewhat average Iowa team handed the sophomore Fab Five team one of its 3 losses in the Big Ten that year (other 2 being to Big Ten winning Indiana team).  I feel like they could not miss that day.  I remember at the time chalking this up to the Hank Gathers principal (do not run into a team honoring a fallen teammate), and being a big baby about it, but with age I understand now that this is actually a pretty cool thing, both in rising to the occassion to honor the teammate in the very next game(s), and in continuing to honor his memory 25 years later.

We lost five games that year.

-One to the defending national champion (Duke) on the road;

-Two nail-biters to a loaded, #1 seed IU team;

-The national championship game to UNC (no further details necessary);

-...and to Iowa.  First game after Street's death.  I can't say I was even that upset about it.

My Hawkeye girlffriend told me about this and thought it was pretty cool. Amazing that the streak will forever be suspended.  Would love to see other players after Bohannon do this as well.

Bohannon is really a lights out shooter.  If they can get a real point guard next year they could be trouble with Cook inside and Bohannon raining 3s from beyond the arc.

Chris Street, Acie Earl and Wade Lookingbill were the players who seemed to have had eight years of eligibility. Those teams were always feisty. This is nice to see these days.

This year was the 25th anniversary of his death.  The team had a very emotional tribute to him at the game closest to the actual night of his accident.  They had his family there (who are amazed at how much the Iowa team still honors and remembers him), and kept an empty chair along the bench with his jersey on it.

My adoptive state is pretty special.

This is a really classy and thoughtful move. Good for Bohannon. I still think Cal Ripken Jr should have done something similar and tied Gehrig's record and then removed himself from the lineup the next game. After all, Gehrig couldn't control the fact he had to retire because of ALS.

Great story - I can't believe it has been 25 years since Chris Street passed away.  I didn't see the game but if I were the Northwestern coach I would have instructed my player to miss his free throw in response.

It is this and not the one and done players that makes college basketball fun to watch.

That was such an honorable thing to do. How counter cultual to give up an opportunity to put yourself alone in the record books.  In the post game interview, Fran McCaffrey tried to take a little credit by saying that he had thought of it but did not mention it to Jordan. I found that to be... Not classy.

Anyways, this is a fantastic story. Thank you for sharing!

That almost went in.

If I was going to miss on purpose, I'd make sure that I air-balled it, or hit the backboard off to the side.

Fortunately for me, that's my normal shot.
