OT: I'm conflicted! OSU I hate them, I love them

Submitted by mdsgoblue on

I have just as much intense disdain for OSU as the next guy I guess, but lately I've been given reason to be conflicted about those feelings of disgust and anguish that I feel every time I hear anything about them.

My brothers wife was recently diagnosed with a type of Ovarian/Cervical cancer, they are both struggling to maintain a family of 6 with a new baby and this happens.  To make matters worse, neither one of their medical benefits would cover this type of medical issue.

So a doctor that is an OSU alum offered my brothers wife to come to the university hospital for evaluation to see what could or would be done.  After the evaluation the university offered to not only remove the cancer from her body, but to perform all follow on treatment of chemotherapy and radiation, all at the ridiculous cost of FREE!

It is these types of things that make us stronger and restores a sense of faith in humanity that has been sinking lower and lower, at least for me.

So I'm officially behind gritted teeth saying, "Thank you OSU for your generosity and for saving her life!"

Now, heres to putting a whooping on them on Nov 27

It seems that the biggest d-bags always seem to be the most vocal.  But for every d-bag there's usually a good-hearted alum/fan, even at OSU.  These kinds of stories are always a good reminder that the d-bags are not necessarily a good sample of the fan base.  That said, there's definitely more OSU d-bags than Michigan d-bags.  Go Blue!

This is a good story.  And as much as we don't want to sometimes, it's good to put aside our sports rivalries to see the bigger picture.  I'm glad to hear she is getting the care she needs and impressed at the manner in which it is being provided.

Now, why only a 2 TD margin???  It is OSU, right?

And you came to the mgoblog board to seek solace?  Interesting choice, it seems like you're looking for a reason to dislike them again.

Why don't we have people embed OSU cheap shots to refresh your memory.  Can't seem to find that soccer one from the other day.  Help?

My opinion of the Ohio health system has improved somewhat. The last time somebody had a story like this I remember the hospital refusing to treat the patient because their health care was through the state of Michigan.

Speaking of which, I wonder how that all turned out. I don't remember how dire the circumstances or anything like that, just that it was in fact quite serious and that the person was rejected for someting as stupid as the source of insurance being Michigan.

They aren't the hillbillys that we portray them to be (when they aren't tailgating and watching the buckeyes) that they are decent human beings.

<br>I have a brother in law who's a buckeye fan and he's a good guy and we talk civilly about football.

It is hard to believe that some select members of OSU and even MSU's university community are not the classless ignorant trash that their fans seem to suggest they would be.  Still, these examples of good people in the wrong place at the wrong time do persist, and make it important to judge each rival fan independently.  Just because the gene pool would benefit from the removal of the vocal majority of their fan base does not mean we can "throw out the baby with the bathwater".  This is a praiseworthy and generous act by OSU Hospital.

Hate the program, respect the institution.  For all the crap we give them, osu is a solid school academically.  Sure, it's only 6th best in the Big Ten (according to USNWR for undergrad), but it's still rated more highly than 10/12 SEC schools (Vandy and Florida are rated higher) at #56 overall (tied with Purdue and Georgia).  You can get a great education there, and they do have a good medical school and health system.

I have a family member who is treated for a rare disease by a specialist at OSU .  The only similiar specialist in the country is at the Univ. of Texas, so we think of ourselves as lucky to be near the one at OSU.

I'll be euphoric the next time M beats OSU, but the school itself is not something to hate.

Best of luck to your sister-in-law.

In a sports fan/kayfabe kind of way, I "hate" OSU and its fans, as I do MSU and its fans.  But when it comes down to living life and relating to fellow human beings, I can't really make myself hate anyone.  And I won't even strongly dislike them until they give me at least two "reasons" to do so.

I have a rare form of Cancer known as Characinoid Cancer.  It is usually misdiagnosed as Irritable Bowl Syndrome and most patients are Stage 4 before it is correctly located and treatment begins.  I was one of the lucky ones in that mine was found before it metastasized and spread to my vital organs and I was treated at the James Cancer Center at Ohio State.  It is one of only two institutions that have a specialized department devoted to Characinoid Cancer and they literally saved my life.

So while once a year I root like Hell against them in football the rest of the time they are A-OK with me.

I like your post, as it is a good reminder that there is a distinct difference between a sports rivalry and the merit of individual persons.

As a general rule, I dislike OSU fans, but primarily because they are quick to talk shit.  They probably feel the same way about UM fans.

A friend of mine (essentially my surrogate grandfather) needed a procedure done a few years back, the nearest hospital which had the equipment, personell, and expertise to perform said procedure was OSU's university hospital. However when they found out he was from Frankenmooth (spl?) they promptly ignored him... moved him from his room to the waiting room (not kidding) and pretty much forgot about him for a while.

Anyway long story short he eventually was treated, but the way he was treated was so unprofessional it prompted his son to write an angry letter to Tressel (I guess because he's the only one there whos name anybody knows), who apologized for what happened and called it unacceptable.

Basically OSU fans and employees take this way too seriously, his son should've been ripping heads off, and Tressel isn't a complete A**hole (just kidding, he seems to be a nice guy by all accounts... I still don't like him though)

MDSGOBLUE, you've got it right.

I'd like to share an experience I had.  I am living an hour east of Columbus - been here for a couple of years and will be out of here in a few more.  Being a Michigan grad, OSU was always enemy territory.

About a year ago, I was taking medication for a problem in my leg.  I was over-medicated and ended up at OSU's medical center.  It was determined that I needed minor surgery to one of my legs.  Most of the health staff I was involved with knew of my love for Michigan, and, due to the fact it was football season, "the rivalry" was often discussed..   I took the obligatory grief from many of the docs, etc. including their threat of forgetting anesthesia.  Everything was good natured, as it should be.

I had to wear a pressure bandage on my leg for a week.  So, although they threatened to have me decked out in scarlet, the nurses searched around and found blue material and used that instead.  I thought it was really neat.

I have made a bunch of friends who went to OSU.  Everybody does the obligatory bust chops about Michigan because that goes with the territory. Then, though, you go on to other things.  Obviously there are the jerks, often the wannabes, who do stupid things like those referenced in Brian's infamous trip to Columbus several years ago.  The bottom line, however is that OSU and Michigan are schools that have the purpose of preparing students for careers, and they both succeed admirably.  Well, Michigan succeeds a bit better, but OSU really ain't so bad either.

Yeah, we have to hate them and they have to hate us because that is what we do. But we are bigger than that - ask the Mealer family.  I don't cry very often, but I did that day - sitting in the Big House crying over an OSU grad, and it was all right.  I, like the original poster, have had my feelings tempered.  I wish it were otherwise, but I just can't help it.

I actually went to tOSU and worked over in the Medical Center.  It's a nice place and a lot of nice people work there and the school itself it pretty nice (even if it's not up to the academic standards of UM).  However, when it comes to football, that's a different game.  I didn't go there for the football team and since the academic and medical rankings of universities don't include "how did your football team do last year" I feel no remorse in hating the football team.  tOSU (the actual university) = good, tOSU football team = BBBOOOOOO!!!!!  :)

The school is good at certain things, but is largely over-rated.

Yet there are several things to admire about some of the people and some of the institution.  If I were to guess at one area that would rise above - it would be the medical school/hospital.

Best of luck to your families.

But always, Go Blue!
