OT: How was everyone's trip home?

Submitted by othernel on January 10th, 2024 at 11:47 AM

After the euphoria of winning the title, I know a lot of us faced the reality of getting home in a storm that was crippling a large part of the US.

In the Austin airport, I saw a lot of us grounded, waiting for updates on whether flights would take off. I personally was able to get in early this AM, after several delays, and my home airport closing 20 minutes before we were set to land.

Hopefully everyone made it home without issue.

Best decision I made was rebooking my flight from day of the game to night before.

After the game, walked out of NRG around 10:30-11ish, tried an Uber but it was hopeless so just kept walking until we found an Residence Inn/Suites with a bar and lobby full of Michigan fans.

Chilled a while, warmed up, and got a ride to an IHOP for pancakes at midnight. Of course the only people there were other Michigan people.

Got back to the hotel around 2:30, went to bed at 3:30, up at 4:30 to catch a 6am flight back to California. On time. Back home for lunch.

Military precision, baby.

No issues flying out of IAH late afternoon/early evening yesterday. The biggest travel/logistics issue was the ridiculous amount of time it took to get an Uber/Lyft from the stadium back to our hotel in downtown Houston after the game.

I'll be back from Houston in just a few hours after a road trip there and back.  Probably gained 5 lbs from all the good ribs and  barbeque along the way, including some fantastic brisket yesterday afternoon.  I guess that's the silver lining to this method of travel.

We drove. 3 of us left Houston around 1pm yesterday. Luckily we never hit bad roads. Arrived home in Lansing about an hr ago.  Currently in Powerhous Gym in East Lansing working out for only the 3rd time since December 31st. Wearing full out Michigan gear and getting dirty looks from dozens of people.  Still riding on euphoria!

Didn't fall asleep till around 4 after the game. Up at 6 for a 9:00 am flight out of Houston on Tuesday, with a 30 min layover in Charlotte en route to Detroit. Delayed flying out of Houston, so it was a tight window getting to the next gate, but we made it. Tons of Michigan fans in the airport and flight. Saw Desmond and his kids waiting for a different flight at the airport, we talked for a minute (both of us were wearing Michigan vs Everybody hoodies. The pilot on the Charlotte to Detroit flight (about half of us in Michigan gear) had us sing The Victors.

Got stuck on my route twice. Dallas -> Miami -> Detroit. Stuck in Dallas most of the day yesterday. The plane took off 5 hours late due to weather (understandable). Then Miami Flight boarded at 12:30 AM and sat on the runway waiting for gas to take off at 2:15 AM. Then to land in Detroit just after 5 AM to not have an available gate at DTW for 45 additional minutes. I pulled into my house at 6:30 am. Ridiculously handled by the airline that I shall not name but will never fly with again.

Like plenty of others, we had quite a time getting back home yesterday. . . flew from Dallas to NYC; original connecting flight thru ATL was delayed so I was able to rebook direct to LGA. . . looked to be no problem; BUT there was a glitch w/the Delta app and I spend over an HOUR at the ticket counter in DFW trying to get that squared away, which caused us to miss the rebooked flight. . . now we finally got on a flight leaving around 4 (then 5, then 5:30), which promised to be landing during the worst of the storm on the East Coast. . . and WOW - what a flight.  Almost got sick on the roughest flight I've experienced in 20+ years. . . finally landed without issue; home before midnight. . . all in all, really didn't care - was still buzzed from the game.

Long boring story about a long travel day. . . in the end, who cares - MICHIGAN IS THE NATIONAL CHAMPION!!!!

Feel blessed I was able to go; first bowl game I attended since 97 Rose Bowl. It was worth the wait!

My trip home Tuesday morning, 14 hour flight to Tokyo then an hour on the Narita express, was much better than my flight to Houston 32 hours prior. If you have the patience, this is the story of how I traveled across the world and snuck into the national championship game.

Monday morning in Tokyo, about 24 hours before kickoff, I book the last seat out to Houston. 16 hours before kickoff, we takeoff. 4 hours before kickoff, the flight is diverted to San Antonio due to tornadoes in Houston. After sitting on the tarmac for a few hours, I accepted that it wasn't going to be, and let go of my ticket purchased hours earlier, at a $900 loss. I also let go of my ill-fated attempt to witness what I've been waiting 25+ years for. Then, 15 minutes before kickoff, we get the clearance and takeoff for Houston. We land 30 minutes after kickoff; I race through the airport watching what I missed on YouTubetv (phone)... jumping at the dons first td. I reach the taxi area to find madness. I eventually get a cab and give him a monetary incentive to jet me to the stadium. I arrive at halftime, and set off to find my friend's car in the Blue lot in order to drop my luggage. Impossible; I'm losing hope. I flag down a police officer on a cart, and he drives me around until we find the Explorer. I drop my luggage and race to stadium entrance while navigating stubhub and ticketmaster to purchase a ticket... any ticket. No luck; neither site will process a sale that late. It's over... I walk around the stadium dejected. I traveled all this way to make it that close; I could hear the roar of the crowds. As if it couldn't get any worse, suddenly, a rainstorm; I sprint for shelter near a stadium entrance. There, about 20 stadium crew that were cleaning the pregame festivities from the lots scramble in. Without thinking I get in the middle of them and shuffle into the stadium. I quickly flash a screenshot of my previous ticket that I had let go of hours before, and security just nods and waves me in. Couldn't believe it, I snuck into the national championship game with about ten minutes left in the third quarter! The rest is history.

Southwest flight back yesterday afternoon from Houston Hobby to Baltimore was delayed about an hour due to late arrival/boarding then another 2 hours waiting for clearance to fly due to air traffic control restrictions. The pilot claimed that all the traffic from corporate jets at nearby airports were also having to wait their turn the same as us. I was just happy to get home with no other problems after a fantastic win by Team 144.
