OT: Friday POSBANG (MGoBloggers In Real Life edition)

Submitted by ChopBlock on

Happy Posbangin' Friday, everyone! Time to do our civic duty (don't worry, it's nothing like jury duty) and upvote each poster to his/her full five. What better way to celebrate the weekend? This weekend's task for me is MacGuyvering some backpacking gear and making a few last-minute preparations for a hike.

Topics!

  • What are your weekend plans?
  • Any MGoBackpackers out there?
  • Have you ever met an MGoBlogger in real life, or found out someone you know is an MGoBlogger?
  • Favorite grilled cheese variants?

I've actually only ever met two MGoBloggers, one who posts occasionally on the board, one who doesn't. This is rather surprising, given my residence in the Mitten State. Have you ever run into someone, guiltily admitted your obsession with MGoBlog, and discovered they were a fellow MGoAddict?

My weekend plans entail more time at the driving range in advance of my golf trip to Myrtle Beach in March. Also imbibing in some adult beverages to celebrate surviving the layoffs at my company.

I don't backpack, but recently got into camping with the wife, so maybe in the future.

I know a few fellow posters in real life. I've never disclosed my screenname to people and haven't had them disclose theirs to me, but I know they post here.

My favorite grilled cheese is wheat bread, swiss, and some spiral-cut honeybaked ham. I've been told I make some killer grilled cheese by several people, but I really don't think I do anything special.

1. Picking up youngest daughter from college to be home for the weekend.  Will find something to do with her.

2. No

3. No

4. My wife bought us a panini press for Christmas, so we've been trying all sorts of combinations for grilled cheese.  Smoked gouda with a bit of garlic salt is good, as is corned beef and swiss. Of course bacon makes any sandwhich better,

1. Drinking.  Midterms are over and I'd love to forget them.  Replacing "beer, wings, sports" with "beer, wings, whiskey, beer, sports, wings, beer, beer."

2. hell yes.   Backpacking the Smokey mountains for Spring Break (first week of March for UMers).

3. I know none.

4.  Ancho Chili powder with sharp cheddar.  Slice of pepper jack.  If you like it as I do, replace the powder with cayenne.

Wow. You have crampons and gaiters and whatnot? You're gonna need them if you get out of the river valleys. This photo was taken at ~4000 ft on Mt LeConte on March 22 a few years ago. Trail conditions were worse near the top (and blizzarding)

2. Novice.  I have backpacked Isle Royal before.  That was an awesome trip.

3. No.

4. Ham & Swiss.

Going to the game Sunday! Buying a gun Saturday at Cabellas, and studying for the P.E. after work today! Giddy up! My chronological order is out of whack!

I fulflled a portion of my Beveled Guilt by donating a ticket to The Game this past year and went to The Game with Seth, from MGoBlog. I don't know if he counts as a MGoBoard member? :P

Has become more of a means to good fishing in the last decade than an activity for its own sake.  Wind River Range in Wyo and Mt. Zirkle Wilderness area in CO are great for both the walk and the fishin.  Good (but small) trout stream and ponds in the Porkies as well.

Know a couple mgobloggers

sharp NY cheddar on sourdough with mushroom soup

a buddy and I made about a 3 or 4 hour climb up to the first pass.  I was in ok shape, but he was in kinda piss-poor shape.  Altitude got us both a little and the reconstituted beef stroganoff looked precisely the same coming out of his gut as it had going down an hour before.   Things got better after that and it is beautiful country.  Pizza and beers in Lander were a good way to finish the trip.  That was a long time ago.

1. Watch some Tigers spring ball, Michigan game on Sunday, clean the house, read, and possibly go snowshoeing.

2. I'm currently looking at packs, but it's proving difficult to find one that fits well. However, purchasing a pack can wait since most of the good/challenging backpacking areas here (Wyoming) require mountaineering skills this time of the year.

3. Yes

4. A regular 'ole grilled cheese with tomato soup.

What are your weekend plans? - Not a whole lot really.  Dinner with friends tonight, watching the game Sunday, and studying for a grad school quiz Tuesday.

Any MGoBackpackers out there? - I do camping but not so much backpacking. More of the pull your car in to the campsite and pitch a tent there variety.

Have you ever met an MGoBlogger in real life, or found out someone you know is an MGoBlogger?  - MGoBlogger OrientalAndrew works in the same company as I do, as it turns out, in a different department on the other side of the building.

Favorite grilled cheese variants? - Just straight up standard grilled cheese, nothing fancy. Butternut white bread + kraft singles.

Have a great weekend everyone!

1. Hanging out with my newborn son.

2. Yes, and the key is to not stressing out when you don't have all the perfect gear. I live near the AT.

3. No.

4. Quesadilla with Tapatio sauce.

Twins man, that's gotta be wild. He's about 14 days. We're slowly getting better sleep. Key so far is not wake him up during nighttime diaper changes which equates to fast and "half-ass" cleaning. Also, the littly guy konks out in the moby wrap which helps mom and I get a lot of work done.

Wow, can't believe I'm writing baby stuff on mgoblog, please don't neg me.

to you Bombadil on your newborn, and to you Will on the twins - your hello post on them when they were born was epic.

I know it sucks now for lack of sleep, but it'll get better in a few more weeks (at least it did with one kid, I don't know the dynamics of twins).  Our 14 month old started sleeping  6+ hours less than two months after birth so once the kids get to that point you can regain your sanity.

It seems a lot of us mgobloggers have had kids recently or already have kids, which makes sense because many of us on here were in college when this blog started up, and are now at the age of typical parenthood.  BiSB had one recently as well. Sometimes I'm honestly surprised the topic of kids doesn't come up more often on the OT posts.

Glad you liked the hello post. Even though I had most of it pre-written, it still took me 2-3 days to have the time/energy to write it up, upload pictures, and hit submit.

I think you are exactly right. I saw quite a few comments from others about to have babies.

I wish there was a private message system for mgoblog, clearEyesFullHart offered to send me some mgoHandMeDowns, but I have no way to get ahold of him.

I thought about making a MGoHandMeDown post, but I'm not sure how kosher that would be since some of the major ads on the site are for apparel. I don't think it conflicts with MGoStore because they only have 1 onesie available... but I try to err on side of caution.

If you ask them nicely, and show them where he offered that in the hello post (I remember someone did offer you hand-me-downs, I think because there's not a lot of UM stuff in Ohio where you are IIRC), they might give you his email address, or email him to ask him if its okay to give you his email address, since the mods can see what email addresses we have on file.  Try your luck in the moderator action sticky thread perhaps.

I do wish the MGoStores had more babies and kids Michigan stuff in general.  We've got a handful of M stuff for our lil wolverine, most of which came from the MDen and was very pricey.  But considering how often we stick him in it, at least we're getting our money's worth.  We're saving hand-me-downs for baby #2 when that one comes, otherwise I'd offer to send over some of ours.

But yeah, a MGoCraigslist section of the board or something would be rather useful, but I bet a lot of people wouldn't like having that on their sports blog.  I've come to think of this place as a community though, not just a sports blog, in the short time I've been commenting on here (despite being a pre-Horror reader).

I love the idea. Maybe suggest it?

The sticky ticket thread was my idea - just tried it one day, let Brian know, and the next thing I knew my google spreadsheet was getting hundreds of hits.

MGoBlog is more than just sports to many of us, but I understand the OT restrictions during the season.

MikeCohodes

February 22nd, 2013 at 10:55 AM ^

that it got suggested once before, even to keep it off the main page like your ticket spreadsheet (brilliant by the way) still resulted in it getting a lot of negative feedback.  I know during the season the mods tend to kill posts on the board related to any sort of craigslisty type stuff, so I don't think it'd fly that time of year for sure.  Maybe after bball season is over and its really really slow during the summer we can take a board user poll and see if there's a support for it, and if so see if we can talk Brian & Co into making it real.

I did a hello post on the twins a day or two after they were born. We had a scheduled C section on signing day, so I had it planned way ahead of time, but then was just simply too exhausted. Got tons of positive comments. I think people are really understading that babies end up taking alot of your time, and while you have a baby lying on your stomach is the perfect time to go on MGoBlog.

Our kids were born 3 weeks premature, so feeding is a nightmare. We got 2 hours of sleep last night. Have you encountered cluster feeding yet?

I took 2 weeks of work, and go back on Monday. I have no idea how MGoWife will handle this all herself.

And that's perfectly OK.  I didn't have twins, but when I went back the wife had a tough time for that first week.  Being her rock was one of the most important jobs I had (though she may argue how good I actually was at this, at times it's tough for both) - let her be sad if she needs to, but you need to be the cheerleader.  And try to do the changing when you get home.

I've found with newborns, for the most part, every day gets easier.  Your second month will be much easier than the first.  Your fourth month much easier than the first three.  Keep that in mind when things are spinning.  It's all worth it.

Yeah your Hello post was awesome. We had some cluster feedings but more cluster bombs when I change a diaper and he fills it upon putting on a clean one. The names Denard, Brady, or Desmond made the final list but narrowly lost out to my wife's father's name. Perhaps on the next one.

Congrats to both you and Will!  My son is 10 days old today (I posted a little further down)...it's been a fun week-and-a-half.  Twins...man, I'm stressed out just thinking about what that might be like.  Best of luck to you, my friend!

If you guys start up any kind of a MGoHandMeDown thing, keep me in the loop.  Or even just some sort of private-ish conversational exchange...advice, encouragement, laughs, whatever.  That is all - I'm done talking about non-football for now.

TODAY IS MY LAST DAY AT THIS JOB!!!!!!!  I am packing my apartment because we are moving from Cleveland to Milwaukee.  I've been looking for a new job on and off for a couple of years, but finally dug in and got it done.

From Michigan....followed wife to Ohio....leaving for a job in Wisconsin.   From a fan perspective it may seem like a easy move (out of Ohio), but Cleveland surprised us and we will really miss being here.

I know nothing about Milwaukee.

Milwaukee is a great town. Definitely get out and see a Brewers game. Miller park is one of my favorite venues. We almost moved to Milwaukee for a job at the Medical College of Wisconsin Milwaukee but decided to head south instead. Good luck with the move.

My wife and kids are gone for the weekend, normally this would be awesome the events that led them out of town weren't the most pleasant.

1. I sorta wanna get drunk this weekend. Since I don't drink anymore this is probably a terrible idea.

2. No.

3. I've met a few real life MGoBloggers.

4. I like my grilled cheese deep fried.

5. Please don't neg me to death, I'm having a shitty shitty last couple of days.

I love Michigan!

You're in luck, this is a "no-neg" posbang Friday!

Secondly, if drinking is a problem for you, I would strongly advise against it. My step-mom passed away due to her problems with alcohol. No need to drink when you have all the mgobloggers for support!

Hope your weekend ends up better than the last few days!

I won't say I'm an alcoholic, but I could never control myself when I drank. I turned into the belligerent fuck you monster. So a few years ago I gave it up.

I don't wanna get into to much detail about what's going on, but the wife is dealing with a tramatic event that happened to her about 10 years ago, that unfortunetely -sp? just reared its ugly head. It's hard watching someone you love more than anything in the world suffer uncontrollably -sp? The worse part is we're not even sure when she's coming home. I miss my best friend.

Sorry resume the posbang. I don't mean to  be a debbie downer.

1.  I got three kids so painkillers and merlot.

2. Not here in my office

3. My little brother who is currently at UM but not sure that counts

4. Dude.  With Italian sausage on a Foreman Grill.

Weekend plans: taking youngest son to baseball clinic; watching basketball game on sunday, working on edits to first novel

Does MGobackbacking count if there's cable? probably not then

I went to the UM game vs. W. Va in Brooklyn, heard some younger guys a few rows up talking about MGoBlog and the rampant discussion at the time over whether we would get Treadwell and Green. I just smiled to myself.

Favorite grilled cheese variants? Man, I can't remember the last time I had a grilled cheese. Now I wants one!

and it is a little awkward sometimes, because I hope that I am anonymous, so it seems like an unfair advantage. Also, I have gradually become aware that some bloogers live quite nearby. I would like to reach out to them, like to watch a big game together or road trip to Ann Arbor, but what are the unwritten rules about that? And I guess it is time to admit this, but how exactly do you upvote someone? I don't see a button for that, and I am afraid of accidently down-voting or moderating them instead.
