OT: Fire up the Michigan Click Cannon: 4-H Kid needs clicks to help pay for feed

Submitted by LSA Aught One on March 31st, 2020 at 7:51 AM

As we are all hunkered down at home in front of our keyboards, I ask you to help fire up the Michigan Click Cannon; like the Money Cannon, but far more affordable.  My 13 year-old niece decided to raise a steer this year and could use your clicks to help her win some free feed.  Grace and her mom do not have a farm, but have received support from some locals who board Clifford, the Big Red Steer, for them.  When they got him, Clifford barely weighed 300lbs.  In a few short months, he is now up to 600lbs.  To compete in the fair (hopefully it still happens), Clifford must reach 900lbs by the end of July.  As any of you who have animals know, feed is expensive.  The good people at Formula of Champions are giving away feed to support youths raising cattle.

Thank you, be safe, and Go Blue!

Well, crap.  I tried voting twice, but the page was smarter than me.  So I'll take the same size order as SCar, only with filets instead of ribeyes.

I just outsmarted the page.  Finally commuted to 'work' by walking upstairs, and voted from my work machine.  Then, just for fun, from my phone.  Screw you, one-time page counter!

As for 4H, the reason we haven't signed up the kid (aside from age, he's only 9) is because we have a bunch of chickens, ducks, and geese right now.  BTW, we are overrun with eggs...  The damned geese are known to lay only a handful each spring (Toulous geese), but the three hens have dropped well over 40 this spring.  Dude, one single goose egg is literally the size of three jumbo eggs at your local grocery store!  In fact, I stopped collecting them so they can sit.  Maybe they'll hatch?  They're first year geese, so the hatch rate isn't great, but might as well let them try.  We've already had enough egg salad, deviled eggs, and fried eggs to last the rest of the year.

Now, about this 'work' thing...

you can bet i voted.  fine looking steer and kudos to your niece.

i'm glad people do this and i hope the local fairs are able to be held.  for those unfamiliar with 4H, the kids raise their animals to show and sell at the fairs.  they get (over)paid for their animals, which is a wonderful part of the tradition.  local families and businesses will bid up the prices and these kids learn a ton about agriculture, commitment (its an everyday thing), patience, etc.  and as you can imagine the money that the kids get usually is their big step toward college tuition or other worthwhile expenses.

Yes, it’s a worthy cause. My daughter showed horses at 4H, which is just performing, not selling like livestock. The kids really work hard and the parents also get involved. The fair is one hot, sweaty week.  For a city boy, it taught me a lot about animals. I will definitely click. And attend your county 4H fair if you can to support.

Done!!
Nephews do 4H here in Ingram county. Whereabouts is your niece? What fair would this be for?
nephews did a dairy steer, bunch of poultry, and I think a couple other things, maybe duck or goat or something. Can’t remember. Their dad and mom are pretty into it, they have a small farm. Kids seem to love it, older boy is doing a full size steer this year. Hope all this works out for everyone involved. Not at all cheap. Brother-in-law tracks the cost of everything, then deducts that from what they make off the animals at fair. Seemed a little douchey to do that to your kids, considering they take that money and save it for them or reinvest it in next years animals, but certainly not my place to say anything. Also don’t know how costly it is for them and maybe getting back the “operating cost” is a big deal

Done!

Can you imagine what the price would have been had the auction been at the beginning of the lockdown? All metro-Detroit stores were out of meat, could've made a fortune!
