OT: Finding "Some Good News" and spreading it around

Submitted by mi93 on March 30th, 2020 at 9:41 PM

We could all use a little, and one of the threads earlier talked about gratitude and finding the silver linings in even simple things.  For me, my kids are playing their instruments together for the first time ever (piano and guitar).  It's like listening to a high school garage band at the moment (a little meh with promise in those misaligned notes), but the highlight of my day.

I also saw this today.  And the Krasinski YouTube video is awesome.

What's inspiring you or making you appreciative today?

Can confirm they work.

And if you don’t want to trip balls, look into microdosing.  Google info on the John Hopkins psilocybin/depression study.  Many of the scientists involved in the study are asking for shrooms to be on the same level as CBD and the FDA is fast tracking research into it as a depression medicine.  They have virtually zero adverse side effects and they’re safer than weed (when microdosed)

Paul Stamets is a world-renowned mycologist (study of fungi) and has written and spoken extensively on this subject. There are people who have claimed to be cured of years-long crippling depression through one psilosybe trip. He's done a couple of podcasts with Joe Rogan which were absolutely fascinating.

I have to say, having a now 9 week old at home has made this time much, much better than if he were not here.  Now, I work in healthcare and am to an extent up in this shit and have been around a few patients who ended up coming back positive for Covid19...but thus far it hasn't been terrible (in Iowa) and so I shall not make a mountain out of my situation, but to say it's not an anxious time, especially with little guy and mom at home waiting for me, would be a severe misrepresentation of the times.

All that is to say, as much a missing out on my favorite part of the year (opening NCAA Tourney weekend, of which I took off, as well as last Thursday and Friday + weekend) was a gut punch, and this virus overall wreaking havoc on society, priorities and perspective have been put into place, for sure.  Godspeed all. Please listen and ride this out as instructed, even though you're likely to be okay if you were to catch this bastard virus.  It's a real ordeal for many others and you being able to carry this, possibly without knowing, can spell disaster for someone else.

Now...I wish this kid wasn't such a sow at times so I could finish this already months-long bathroom remodel!

spring peepers, one of my favorite things, have started their chorus

i anticipated that farm chores would go into overdrive, more detailed tasks getting done.  that is happening and i have a heck of a list to go.

working out with my oldest two boys in the mornings - hit legs hard today

doing a duathlon tomorrow with one of the daughters.

turkeys started calling, just a little, but they started.   hunting is not cancelled on the farm.  (picture of elmer fudd, in cami's)

Pretty sure Elmer Fudd didn’t do legs or Duathalon’s!
Also, saw a BUNCH or Turks yesterday myself. They were not social distancing themselves from one another. I’m afraid for them...

I am not a hunter, but my housemate in med school was. I must say as much as I love turkey, I was very disappointed in the ones he'd get for us. They were the toughest meat I may have ever eaten. Now his venison sausage and chili were terrific.

don't blame the birds, blame the cook.  wild turkey is the best eating of all the upland game birds.  they are leaner than the genetic freaks people are used to buying/cooking from the stores, so you need to cook accordingly.

years ago we had to leave the UP for a few years and moved out west to take care of my in-laws.  when thanksgiving came around we actually had to buy a turkey.  i realized that up to that point in their lives, my children had never eaten a store-bought bird.  man i missed being home in michigan.

Try your first ruffed grouse or any of the quails and get back to me on that.

Years ago there were not many turkeys anywhere. Now they are everywhere. There are 100 birds easy in my little valley outside Estes Park, CO -- 25 years ago, zippo. Damn things eat the eggs and chicks of our blue grouse in the foothills and bobwhite in the South Platte riverbottom out east.

lots of olive oil, and keep basting with it during cooking.  tented most of the time, except maybe the last 20 minutes or so.  for smaller birds like grouse, chukar and quail, we would lay bacon over it while cooking.  i'm sure google has tons of great/better ideas, but these are ours from before google existed.

Thankful that my family is healthy.  We are all on each others nerves, but I would take that any day over having anyone get sick.  Just praying that my elderly parents do not get this, because it will take them out.  As much as my kids drive me nuts, it has been nice to spend some quality time with them.

I got some more fence boards painted, which will make a nice sliding gate for the new duck pen.  Also got the door track hung.  Need to finish building the door and stapling up the wire fencing while waiting for the aviary netting to arrive.  Other than that, been bike riding with the kid, working, and spending more time at home without the 3-3.5 hr commute time!

Grateful the family is sheltering together and still healthy, and youngest daughter was just accepted to her first choice for college: Northwestern Engineering (tried like hell to convince her to go blue...).

Wash your hands and isolate!
