OT - Favorite/Least Favorite Broadcaster

Submitted by aa_squared on April 26th, 2023 at 8:06 PM

Ok, I saw this topic on another thread, and thought I would bring it here.

Even though it may appear to be negative/mean in some respects, there are also many good aspects.

I can appreciate that everyone sees/hears events in a different light.

If you can, try to list one broadcaster per sport, however, some broadcasters may do multiple sports.

Here is my list:

Favorite broadcaster (Sorry for being a homer.)

Dick Enberg

George Kell/Al Kaline

Frank Beckman

Bruce Martyn/Ken Kal

Least favorite broadcaster

Bob Costass,

Jim Nance

Joe Buck

Gus Johnson

Favorite: Jim Nantz announcing golf

least favorite: Jim Nantz announcing football and basketball.

absolute least favorite: Tony Romo, he’s terrible, the NFL media has brainwashed everyone in thinking he’s good because he predicts plays.

I have to disagree about Romo .obviously he is great at play calling "not predicting"  he would be an ELITE OC (but i know hed never make near the $ he makes now)     he is a great story teller during games. him talking about taking 9 buses to visit teams (pre draft) paying out of his pocket ,is something he brings to the games-- he knows his football (25% of the broadcasters dont seem to know the game)

Tony taking the jokes about his former women is also great - Carrie Underwood .Jessica Simpson the other Miss USA contestant - people have made funny comments about these women and he usually says something like "you try living with her " and the person that made the joke would say something like "ya mustve been rough dating a Miss America runner up"  ...

Brent Musberger and George Blaha can fight it out to see who is worse than Joe Buck.

The best was Frank Beckmann.  Man I miss him.  He had that growling crescendo every time someone broke free.  I think of him when I hear Kevin Harlan.

I will second Spielman, that guy makes a game so fun to watch because he says things that clearly come from his own vast knowledge from playing Linebacker, and he communicates really well for a television audience.  A unique perspective goes a long way.

Herbstreit, on the other hand, was annoying for much of his career.  Perhaps he has gotten a little better, but he was so biased for so long and tilted toward OSU that I don't really think there is any making up for whatever that was.  It clearly wasn't journalism in any normal sense of the word.

And then Musberger and Millen were absolute trainwrecks.  If you had to watch them, you were literally submitting yourself to torture.

There is no one I have missed more over the last few years than Frank Beckman. Such a huge part of my childhood being in northern MI most fall weekends with Frank calling the game. Ricky Powers, Brian Griese, Charles, Timmy B and all the other greats was so fun to listen to. The Brabbs game vs Washington I fell onto the ground as the ball went through the uprights in pure joy and relief hearing Frank call it! I used to turn the TV volume off on the rare occasion I was home and listen Frank as I watched the TV. Rarley were they in sync but didn't even care to me Frank was the voice of Michigan football from 6 years old on.

Showing some team bias here, but... the late legendary Laker play-by-play guy Chick Hearn.

A LOT of basketball vernacular was his invention: slam dunk, air ball, triple-double, finger roll, dribble drive, ticky-tack foul, and those are just the easy ones.

Jim Gray and Jim McKay will go down in infamy.

Gray blindsided Pete Rose at the all-star game and attacked Donovan Bailey after he won a gold metal and set a world record.

Jim McKay called Vancouver a little village.

I like the guys calling the game when michigan wins. Like Klatt and Johnson this year - iconic.

I dislike the guys calling the game when michigan loses. Like Klatt and Johnson going gaga over Urban Meyer in 2018. disgusting.

Joe Buck is my #1 most despised. Dude would be managing a low/no credit furniture store if it weren’t for his daddy.

Doesn’t matter what sport, I mute him.

If you don’t remember his late night talk show this is a gem (featuring a young Jason Sudekis as well):

I don't watch games that Pam Ward or Beth Mowins announce. I also never liked Sean McDonough just because of the way he talks. I find Joe Buck very difficult to tolerate as well.

Also brutal homers like Hawk Harrelson or Jack Edwards annoy the hell out of me. Kirk Gibson, you know, is also a pretty difficult broadcast to watch. I know the reasons are beyond his control, but at the end of the day it's the entertainment industry not a charity (the fact they let Kiner do Mets broadcasts when he was clearly no longer even 80% there was brutal as well).

Sort of on topic, I have fallen in love with synchronizing the TV feed of the game with the Michigan radio feed for the audio.

Great Karsh line on Colston's TD against buki, TD by last year's Co-offensive MVP of the Sawtooth Central Idaho Conference....
