Title says it all. I am weary of his schtick, but damn, that’s some shitty news. Get well, Coach.

Really sorry to see that about Dickie V.  The first basketball game I ever went to as a very little kid was U of D with Vitale as the head coach and I remember his short stint with the Pistons.

College basketball wouldn’t be the same without him!

Get well soon Dickie V!!!!!

I was at his last game as a Piston coach. They had to drag him off the floor. He went beserk on referee Richie Powers.

It's worth noting that this is Hodgkins disease, which is very curable. Still, it requires chemo and for an older man is going to be a tough road. Prayers for him and his family

His Notre Dame football love always irked me more than his basketball schtick.  But I don't wish this on anyone.  Prayers to him and his family.  F*ck cancer.

Please get better so I can happily go back to muting you.

I believe at least one of his daughters attended Notre Dame as well. While I was in college, I was a security guard in the gated community where Dick lived at the time. I have met him several times and spoken to him when he would call to give clearance for guys from ESPN to enter...and "Mean" Gene Okerlund. He was pretty authentic to what you see on tv....there was some degree of drama to the diaper dandy.stuff, but he just seems very excitable.

By "reported" you mean "published a letter from Vitale."  Says doctors tell him 6 months of chemo, but 90% survival rate when caught this early.  That much chemo at his age is rough though.

I know some people do not care for him, but this man has raised millions of dollars for cancer research through the JimmyV foundation and has a deep passion for kids that get diagnosed with cancer.  I pray that he can beat this.

I'm OK with the tokens....both of those guys have given so much to their respective games.  Let them hang on as long as possible in a limited sense.  Their originality is unsurpassed and something that the slew of younger talking heads can not duplicate.  Wishing Dickie V a good fight and a quick recovery!

I don't care what anyone says, I like Dickie V AND his schtick.  The guy is genuinely enthusiastic about college hoops.  We should all be so lucky, to be that excited about stuff, especially at his age.  I think his enthusiasm has been great for that sport and I don't think there's any doubt he's legitimately a good dude as well.  Hoping for a fast recovery and many more years of that schtick.

I know I am in the minority, but he's great. Dude got to live out his dream and he's just super enthusiastic about the sport.

For the people that think he's a big Duke slappy- he basically loves EVERY team. When he talks about Michigan on other broadcasts, he is off-the-wall positive.

Wish him well!

His original dream was to be a great coach (he did well at U-Detroit but then bombed in the NBA) but he moved on to announcing and clearly has enjoyed it.

As annoying as his shtick sometimes is, he’s a good guy and CBB would not be the same without him.  It’s true, he’s always been very fair to Michigan.

Get well soon Dickie V.

Given all his work with the Jimmy V foundation and the hundreds of millions he helped raise for Cancer research and awareness over the years....

This feels like a really cruel twist of fate.  Wishing him the best.
