OT: Ennio Morricone dead at 91

Film composer Ennio Morricone has passed away at age 91, from complications due to a broken leg suffered a few days ago. You know him best from The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, plus many of the other Sergio Leone spaghetti westerns, John Carpenter's The Thing, and recently, Quentin Tarantino's Hateful Eight, the first film he actually won an oscar for. All in all, he wrote some 500 film scores.

Fun fact, in 1966, the year that he wrote the music to The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, he wrote 15 other film scores, working out to about one every three weeks.

The sound track from the Good, the Bad and the Ugly was excellent. One of my favorites! RIP Ennio!

That score is so good! I liked using it in the class I used to teach to show the impact music can have on a film- the Mexican standoff scene at the end is essentially just three minutes of people staring at each other, but the score there (plus the pacing of the editing) makes it absolutely riveting.

its a beautiful thing (and kind of crazy) when one can not only do their job at 80-90 yrs old, but do it well.  talented dude

I've watched a lot of these old Eastwood movies recently, and I think it's quite amazing how well they stand up 50 years on. Especially the 3 Sergio Leone movies.

But of 3, this was definitely the weakest. My theory being the extra budget money from the first 2 made it worse, when minimalism was one of the keys to why the first two worked so well.
