OT- Detroit Lions Draft Preview
Hey everyone, this is my first post on the board, kind of exciting.
As the NFL Draft is just over a week away, I figured I would make a little preview for who the Detroit Lions could select in their various rounds.
Detroit Lions Picks:
Rd. 1 (#16)
Rd. 2 (#46)
Rd. 3 (#95)
Rd. 4 (#111)
Rd. 5 (#151, #169)
Rd. 6 (#191, #202, #210)
Rd. 7 (#236)
Areas of Need For Detroit:
OT, DT, DE, WR, C, SS for potential upgrades/starters
WR, CB, LB, QB, S for depth picks
Round 1: #16 possibilities
Notre Dame OT Ronnie Stanley – likely would be the best option for the Lions here, as he’s a very high caliber LT who could step in almost immediately and push Reiff out to RT. Doubtful he’ll be available.
Louisville DT Sheldon Rankins – Could see some snaps immediately depending on health of Ngata and Walker, but a quick-twitch defensive tackle who could play either the 1-tech, or 3-tech in various fronts.
Ole Miss WR Laquon Treadwell – needs no introduction, but even with the signing of Marvin Jones, the Lions could use another high caliber receiver to add to the mix. Might be too good to pass up, questionable with injury though.
Clemson DE Shaq Lawson – With only Ansah and Devin Taylor on the edge, Detroit may feel the need to go DE right away and Lawson would likely be the top option at that point.
Ohio State LT Taylor Decker – I may get crucified for saying this (as he’s a Buckeye) but I would love to see Decker on the Lions. May not be an immediate LT, but capable of being a high-caliber, starting Tackle fairly quickly.
Round 2: #46 possibilities
Texas A&M LT Germain Ifedi – has the potential to be one of the best OT’s in the entire draft but has slightly sloppy technique that would need to be cleaned up. If he falls to this spot, Lions should definitely take him.
Oklahoma State DE Emmanuel Ogbah – If the Lions don’t take a DE in round 1, then Ogbah would be a solid second round pick. Built to play immediately in the NFL.
Baylor DT Andrew Billings – incredibly powerful, run-plugging DT who could see some immediate minutes for Detroit. Question is if he’s still on the board at this point.
Notre Dame C Nick Martin – Personally, I think Swanson is an ok center, but not great, nor likely to be, if Martin is available he would be a good addition to the OL.
West Virginia SS Karl Joseph – Even with the signings of Rafael Bush, Tavon Wilson and several other DBs, the Lions could still be looking for another safety and Joseph is one of the best in the draft.
Round 3: #95 possibilities, Round 4: #111 possibilities
Since these picks are only about 15 picks apart, they are close enough that some of the same players may be available in either spot. So I’ll mention 7 total instead of 5 for each pick
Rutgers WR Leonte Carroo – Pretty much the only competent thing to come out of Rutgers recently. Could be a steal.
LSU FS Jalen Mills – Although Detroit is more likely to look for a strong safety than a free safety than strong, Mills is an athletic coverage safety who could be useful against pass-happy teams.
Arizona LB Scooby Wright – An instinctive, relentless tackling machine for RichRod, Wright could provide some depth at LB, maybe even contend for a starting role fairly soon.
Southern Utah SS Miles Killebrew – Personally is my favorite prospect for this spot, a physical safety who hits hard. At a minimum would likely be a great special teams player in year one.
Stanford OT Kyle Murphy – Definitely is a RT as opposed to LT. Fairly similar to Riley Reiff in that sense. A strong tackle with a quick first step, lacks athleticism to play against elite DE’s in the NFL.
Nebraska DT Maliek Collins – highly athletic, quick defensive tackle who would be a decent 3rd down interior rusher. Would need to add strength to be more effective against the run.
Notre Dame CB KeiVarae Russell – though he had some academic issues at ND and wasn’t able to return, Russell is very athletic and projects to be a skilled cover corner. Could be a steal.
Round 5: #151, 169 possibilities
same as before…7 possibilities.
USC CB Kevon Seymour – fast, athletic corner who would likely be an immediate special teams contributor.
Western Michigan OT Willie Beavers – Could be a really good LT someday but not likely to see time early.
Missouri C Evan Boehm – strong, drive-blocking center. Not likely to overtake Swanson right away, if at all.
Stanford QB Kevin Hogan – at the QBs could potentially go he may not even be there, but would be a good developmental project to take.
Penn State DE Anthony Zettell – uses hands well, could be a solid back-up, maybe even rotational player with a year or two.
Stanford LB Blake Martinez –aggressive LB who was very productive in college. Solid depth pick.
Michigan DT Willie Henry – could reasonably go anywhere from Round 2 to Round 6…who knows.
Round 6: #191, #202, #210 possibilities, Round 7: #236 possibilities
Just going to list 12 prospects, no evaluation.
Florida State DT Nile-Lawrence Stample
Baylor OT Spencer Drango
South Carolina OT Brandon Schell

In my lifetime the Detroit Lions have
-15 Losing Seasons
-12 seasons with at least 10 losses
-5 playoff appearances (0-5 record)
-A season where they went 0-16. Only team ever to do that.
-Seen 2 players that were possibly the best at their position, EVER, retire early rather than keep playing for Detroit.
There's a reason for the pessimism. Good things haven't happened to us in 50+ years.

I hope there's more than one for you in the next 31 years :)
but I was a year old when the Lions won their last championship in 1957.

My mistake. Carry on.
It is the Lions purpose to disappoint.
Consider last year as a microcosm of all Lions seasons since the curse of Layne. They appear to be promising but fall into what others might consider to be an epic losing streak bcause those others are not Lions and have no real concept of epic losing. The hopes and dreams of promise are crushed ..... of course ..... as required by nature.
But a new dream arises. The Lions might secure a very high pick in the draft. That dream must also be crushed because ..... LIONS. And so they run off a winning streak in order to deny the faithful both the dream of the playoffs and the dream of a new savior via the draft.
That one there was almost as profound as Nick Eddy ruining his career stepping off a train.

If we go WR in Rd1, Wil Fuller over Treadwell. Dude is a serious downfield threat and always seemed to play big in big games for them.
has the speed, but that's it. He has bad hands (drops a ton of balls). Doesn't offer much beyond go route.

Wait, the NFL Draft is coming soon? I hadn't heard a word about it. ESPN and espn.com should really start covering that.

I really feel like Stanley would be an ideal choice for the Lions. Had the worst RT play in the league last season and Reiff is not a natural LT. Stanley would likely start from day 1 at LT with his ability to pass protect and I think Reiff would be a really solid player on the right side.
All that said there is no way he is around at 16. If he falls out of the top 10 I would seriously consider a move up.
but I'm going to vent here a little bit............ I had much bigger off-season expectations with the Lions this year as they had finally straightened out some salary cap mess from year's past and would have a lot more money to spend going into free agency this year. Here we are months later and they've done less than nearly any team during F/A this offseason.
I've heard people trying to spin it with "free agency isn't how you build a team". That's not true as you need to look at how well both Denver and Carolina did there last season. Free agency is also how the Lions picked up Golden Tate and Glover Quin, two of their top players overall.
The new one I've been hearing is "they built up much some needed depth." Building depth sounds like a great idea but how did their lack of depth hurt them last year? In fact I'd argue the depth last year was the biggest reason for the Lions season turning around as that's when Michael Ola took over for LaAdrian Waddle and also when Diggs came in for an injured Rashean Mathis. Even DeAndre Levy's replacement (Josh Bynes) actually played very well.
The Lions should have came out of this F/A period with a bare minimum of 3 decent starters. They've failed to address their biggest areas of concern on both sides of the football. They spent the lowest percentage of the salary cap in the NFL last year on the offensive line and it showed Matthew Stafford was nearly killed early on in the season. I'm not saying the Lions were being cheap either for spending the least amount on their O.L. but instead it had more to do with all the younger guys they had up front who were on their rookie contracts.
They currently have the same group coming back this season and even if they do grab rookie in the 1st round at offensive tackle there's going to be a big learning curve with him next season.
I'm sure like all Lions fans I will start to like their offseason even more so after this year's draft is over and will once again have high hopes for a big season like I every year, LOL.
