OT--Champions League, Round of 16: Day 2

Bayern opened up a can of whup-ass on Arsenal. Whatever. I'm an Evertonian. Go Blues!

I support Liverpool also, so have no love for Everton.  And if Liverpool ever learns to play against the bottom half of the table like it plays against the top 6, we might be cheering the legitimate club from Liverpool next year in Champions League.

But to the OP's point, it is funny to see Arsenal lose.  (I don't even particularly hate Arsenal, and - in weak moments - admit that they play an entertaining game.  But it's still fun to see them lose.)

Meh.  Everton's not even The Reds' real rival.  We save our real hate for Manchester United.  It killed me when ManU picked up Pogba (especially given that they bought him off of Juventus).

I can't even hate Everton.  They mostly just irritate me.  Kind of like MSU when things are in their natural order.

Except...no. Liverpool supporters love thumping their chests, but EFC is a highly decorated club which plays on a storied ground. No, the record is not as great as Liverpool's, but that's mostly because Everton haven't won as much lately. Everton have gone longer than any other club without relegation, and now there's a new owner, plans for new stadium, and the glory of Lukaku. Meanwhile, Liverpool continues to lead the PL in chest-thumping and disappointing their fans.

I've been to Anfield for a match a few years back when we had Suarez and he was suspended unfortunately for the match. We lost a shit game to Southampton that day and everyone was kind of bummed but they were still partying a bit. My wife and I struck up a friendship with some hooligans (something I didn't realize until much later). They took us out on the town and we had a great time. Little did we know they were hanging out and waiting for Everton. Everton was playing a match in London... So, all the LFC fans did was wait for Everton to get back into town off the train and then all hell broke loose. I wanted to hang around... But our new friends were much wiser and got us some food and flagged a taxi before the donnybrook was really a go. Main reason I wanted to stick around was the lack of respect and shit that was said to my wife and I for only wearing a red kit. Closest thing I've ever experienced to that is in Columbus.

Try wearing your YNWA scarf and LFC shirt and hat to Old Trafford and report back.  And after the game be sure to put yourself in a situation where people have been drinking all night and looking for trouble.

Then tell me if it's true.

(FWIW, I'm mostly yanking the OP's chain - I used to even kind of like Everton when Tim Howard was GK for the Toffies.  But that's kind of the point.  Howard joins Everton, and I can kind of like Everton so long as LFC's table position isn't affected.  ManU?  My favorite player in the world - Pogba - joins ManU, and I still hope they lose every game.)

With the way that Bayern Munich almost annually reminds Arsenal fans that they are wasting years of their lives in the round of 16, this shit should become a holiday.

Some great goals today, but if I objectively filter out my team preferences, my favorites were Benzema's header, Robben's curling strike, and the Napoli goal.  I'm enjoying seeing Arjen Robben back in good form this late in his career.

Which title are teams in Europe actually trying to win? To a non soccer fan it seems as if the NFL might award a title for the best team in exhibition season. Then maybe an Sept-October champ, followed by a playoff among teams that get hot after Halloween and then regular playoffs and the Super Bowl. Can someone explain what European teams are trying to win?

Well, there are multiple trophies, cups, etc teams can win every year. The Champions League is the most prestigious. The top teams in every European league play in a round robin tournament in which each team in a bracket plays the other in a home and away. In our terms (God Bless America!), it's like winning the NCAA tournament. Winning a league championship means finishing at the top of standings--no playoffs. That's like winning the Big Ten.

Round-robin normally means that you play every other team in the competition.  32 teams compete in the Champions' League (excluding the preliminary qualifying).  You play against a maximum of seven of them (for a maximum of 13 games).

The group stage does use a round-robin format, but it's just the first part of the competition.
