He got ejected for THAT?!?! Wow. I'm all for player safety, and he'll, if you wanna flag that because the QB was "giving himself up" the be my guest. But an ejection for that? What the hell?

I didn't know about the ejection.  I just assumed Countess hurt Auburn by carrying a little Hokeball with him into the AU locker room and infecting the team.  How else do you explain such an underwhelming performance against a clearly outmanned team?

just another case of "how did these guys become referees?"

I can't even see how that draws a 15-yard flag, let alone an ejection.  Ridiculous.   Countess is already starting to tackle the QB before he goes into his slide.  He didn't lead with him helmet.  Yeah, his arm hit the QB in head specifically because the QB slid, not because Countess targeted his head.

Is there some rule that football refs have to be completely terrible or something?

Bad call and even worse job of kissing referee's asses by color commentator. Blake had started his tackle right before the QB started to slide. If he was in the process of sliding, sure Blake deserved the penalty, but not this time.

A DB in the Colorado vs UMass game was tossed for the same thing and after 15yds were tacked on. In that situation, he definitely lead with his shoulder but his helmet hit under the WRs facemask. After further review and a chorus of boos for the ejection and bad call, color analyst Jeremy Bloom said it's an area of focus for refs this year in CFB - 'crowning' - and something the NCAA wants enforced.

For targeting.  Nine.  I heard the Colorado one on the radio and the announcers thought it was an awful call too.

Football is a violent sport in a wussified country.

But the "man up" attitude comes off as ignorant. Hits to the head ruin lives. Deliberate attempts to injure just aren't very classy. I love me some big hits, and yes I can get frustrated when refs make BS calls which only focus on the result, instead of the situation (e.g. Countess yesterday). But let's not pretend that 'clean' takes away from 'tough'. That's like saying you're less of a man if you don't beat your wife.
