OT: Being a Wolverine in Columbus

Submitted by sedieso on
I had the good fortune of being accepted into Ohio State next year for medical school. While I may hate the school like no other, they do have a good medical program. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, chances are I will be moving to Columbus this summer. The downside to that though is being a UM fan living amongst OSU fans. I was wondering if there is anyone from the area who can tell me if they even show UM games down there, and also if there are any good spots I can watch the games should they not broadcast them on ABC or ESPN.

I live in Cleveland, so it's a little different, but the Michigan game is almost always on, and in fact every game was on last year after I got the Big Ten Network. The good thing is that if Michigan is the regional game, it will almost always be shown in Ohio. I don't know of any spots in Columbus, but in Cleveland, there are a ton of Michigan alumni, and we meet at the Fox and the Hound to watch it, so hopefully there's a similar place in C-Bus.

It's on Mayfield east of Cleveland. I think it might actually be Mayfield Heights. It takes a long time to get there, so I usually only go for the Ohio State game. But even then, there were still Buckeye fans who taunted me in the bathroom about how our QB's sucked.

Do they show games down here? Do you think you're moving to the moon? Congrats on your admission to med school - they have a very nice medical center at "thee" Ohio State. I have lived down here through two seasons and haven't missed a Michigan game on TV. The local alumni society usually organizes "game watching parties" if interested. There are lots of Michigan fans down here. Unfortunately, there are many, many more obnoxious OSU fans. They'll tell you you'll convert, they'll laugh at you when Michigan loses, they'll give you their "condolences", etc. Most is in good fun but, like anywhere, some take it way too far. The recent goodwill may be fueled by the 5-game football winning streak. Hopefully, that will change this fall...

My most sincere and heartfelt condolences to yourself and your family. Find comfort in the thought that all things in life happen for a reason, and one day you'll look back and realize that this horrible tragedy has made you a stronger person. In all seriousness, and regardless of football hate, if it can give you a better life then good luck. The upside is imagining you going into a patient's room as an intern dressed in full block M scrubs, scalpel in hand.... GO BLUE!

I just got done with my undergrad at Ohio State so I spent 4 years on campus. You should be able to watch the games that are on ESPN or ABC and whatnot but if both the Wolverines and OSU are on the Big Ten network at the same time, you are screwed, happen last year when Mich played Purdue and I went to 4 different bars on campus trying to get one tv in the corner on them and it didn't happen.

They show everything- every cable provider basically has Big Ten Network for those games, but the other games are all shown, no worries. UOS and UM hardly ever play at the same time, I don't think. No worries.

My buddy did the same thing as you, undergrad at Mich, Medschool at tOSU... he had no problem with watching games. Usually drove over to my house in Dayton and we watched on my TV drinking copious amounts of Bell's. Just get DishNet or DirectTV with Big Ten Network and you'll see everything just fine. Occasionally you'll get a tOSU or Miami (NTM) v Michigan hockey game on Fox Sports Ohio. Reading this reminded me of my favorite new quote, comes from Bruce Campbell's "Make Love the Bruce Campbell way". In a section of the book he's faking being a wedding planner in Columbus and he just pitched a wedding ceremony at Ohio Stadium with the band and Archie Griffin, etc. The dad of the bride is a Michigan grad and he says, "You were never on the other side like I was. Even before the game, dressedin our Maize and Blue, little old ladies would spit and swear at us as we walked down the street.... I been in 'Nam. I didn't come home to no picnic then either, but I never come against bigger assholes than the goddamned Buckeyes and Woody 'chew your hat' Hayes" My advice: buy a good stain lifting detergent, learn how to wash egg off the siding, and show your maize and blue picking heart where ever you go.

I attended OSU for five quarters before transferring (I was a jerk-off in high school). At first I wore my M gear everyday, mainly because 80% of my clothing consists of M t-shirts, but eventually all the bullshit comments got so annoying that I stopped. There is no where to go that is Michigan friendly in Columbus, and if you wear an M shirt to any bar near campus chances are you'll find yourself in a fight with a handful of drunks. But all the games are on TV, so have fun watching them in your apartment next year.

I went to law school in Cincinnati and when I wore my M t-shirt on the friday before The Game I had 3 guys dumps their leftover panda express on my head. No joke. I LOVE OHIO.

Ugh, I also go to law school in Ohio and have seen similar things. I didn't realize that Cinci was full of tOSU fans also, I think Ohio public schools brainwash every student to hate Mich and love OSU. They don't even know why they hate us, it's like Muslims v. Jews.

Not a damn thing. I was there with one of my law school buddies, and there were a handful of them, they were undergrads. Not to mention that if anything were to happen, I know whose side all the other kids there would be on. Also, the law school frowns on getting in fights with undergrads. Had we been in a bar, I would have dropped one of them, even if it meant getting my ass beat by the rest.

im an undergrad at OSU, soon to be 5th year senior. you might catch the games at the bars if they are different times the buckeye games, but everyone will be rooting against michigan obviously. I say just watch them at your place, its not the same as going out but growing up near columbus my entire life, 90 percent of buckeye fans are the delusional type with about ten percent the type that are logical and not completely biased. Oh and make sure if your one of the outgoing type that wants to try to wear michigan around you have tough skin you'll get heckled all day everyday.

You guys (living in OH, going to undergrad at OSU, and moving to Columbus, alike) have balls. And for that you deserve congratulations. And now you have it. When I applied to med school, I refused to even apply to OSU. I had no balls. No congratulations for me.

Penn State (MD/PhD). I'm in my second year. Being a Michigan fan here is certainly tolerable. The natives don't like my taste in t-shirts very much, and they are vocal about it. However, I find alumni easily; I live with great people; and I do a lot (or, more accurately, a little) to stay happy. Plus, the words "One" "Second" "Henne" "Manningham" do well to find me peace and quiet, too. It's a great trump card if you're at the bar and disinterested in dealing with hecklers. And it works best if the words are said at once, in order, charmingly, while counting off to four with extended index fingers. (That won't help you in Columbus [though, you still have that nice Cahones Trophy], but it will if you're ever in this figurative neck of the woods.)

And I am a UM grad. It's good to know that if I get accepted, I won't be the only one down there. From what I have heard, you can watch the games on TV, too. There is also a church on the OSU campus, H2O. It was started by Michigan ppl, so it should be Michigan friendly.

I was born and raised here. Grew up watching Bo with my dad. It's rough being a UM fan these days, I miss coach Cooper. Columbus is an awesome city to live in, but there are no bars devoted to UM, and you can catch 75% of the games on TV. You may miss UM-NW or the like... Or try and find a applebys or the like that will play it for you.

My girlfriend's family lives in C-bus (I can't believe it either), and we were there a couple of weekend's ago. We went to a store called The Anderson's, and I was shocked to find a decent amount of Michigan items dispersed among their OSU stuff. Her mom got me a nice Michigan jacket there for Christmas, too. There are obviously copious amounts of OSU garb, but outside of Michigan, I saw no other school represented.
