OT: Baylor SID Attacks a Reporter

Submitted by Sac Fly on

What the hell is wrong with this place?

The Sports Information Director for Baylor football is in trouble after attacking a reporter on the field after a game.

The incident started after Baylor lost 66-22 to TCU; the reporter was taking a picture with a player, which is not allowed, when SID Heath Nielsen tried to karate chop(?) his arm to get him to drop his phone. When he was unsuccessful Nielsen grabbed him by the throat and told him he will never work in the business again.

What's worse than PR guys fighting reporters is that this happened against TCU three weeks ago but Baylor didn't issue a press release until today when people found out.

According to the school's website, Nielsen is "responsible for management of the public image of the program.

ouch, the dudes not exactly excelling in that department

I am... astonished at the level of meltdown in that athletic department.

First, let's establish something we all know: This is bad, but it is on a different planet than an epidemic of sexual assaults and gang rapes that is substantively alleged to have happened.

With that out of the way, it seems clear that the athletic department has deep problems that have not been resolved simply with the firing of Art Briles. There is something very, very wrong in those offices, and Baylor as an athletic program seems destined for total collapse. Grobe is not going to produce extended success, and no coach worth their salt is going to want to take a job there right now, especially with a handful of high-profile jobs available and only one coach (Tom Herman) really qualified to step into one of them.

This story, if accurate, is astonishing.

What the hell happened to football in the state of Texas? Wasn't long ago when it had five very good teams. Now, they all seem to suck. Well, 'suck' might be strong, but they've fallen off. At least they have the Cowboys before the inevitable choke...

It's at a low ebb right now. TCU and Baylor are kind of reverting to the mean (though TCU should rebound). A&M has had a very good, but not great, season that is hampered by losing their starting QB, a situation we can understand.

Texas is the team that is really underperforming. If they get Herman as the rumors suggest, they'll have a Harbaugh-like rebound and are likely to hit 10-2 next season.

Enjoy it while it lasts, because it won't stay this way.

I'm a Christian. I'm amazed by the fact that Baylor has had all this happen - mostly unrepentently - and still calls themselves a 'Christian' university. Seems like it's just a plug to boost admissions...

I have no idea what you're saying. Sandusky is a Christian. Paterno was a Christian. Hell, one of Paternos reasons for not investigating further was because Sandusky was a good Christian man. I thought we had all learned of the dangers of such a statement, but feel free to explain whatever it is you meant.

Obviously saying what your faith is means nothing for the man you are. I was saying that for an institution that professes to be a Christian one, they do not appear to be adhering to Christian principles much if at all. It seems like you and I are more or less agreeing on the hypocrisy going on down there

I've spent a lot of time in Texas.  This honestly doesn't surprise me all that much.  There is a level of crazy in that state that just can't be understood in other parts of the country.

Good lord... Ohio too.

Doesn't seem like whenever you read a story about something fucked up happening somewhere, it comes out of Ohio?

And if there is video, it's some dude that looks like he still lives in the 80s and has a buckstache?

Nielsen is the program's spokesman, the liaison between local and national media, and the primary contact with television and radio networks that broadcast Baylor games.

I am going to guess that these are no longer his duties unless the image that Baylor wishes to portray to the broadcast media is still the image that it has anyway, which is not a very pretty one.

Just when you thought that Baylor couldn't make itself look WORSE.....there they go.

Baylor was not good before Art Briles and they'll not be good after. There's no track record or tradition there to go back to. Briles is their only success and now that his era is tarnished, there's no reason Baylor should ever be anything more than the other second class big 12 teams.
