OT: Am I a Bad American if I Root for Coach K to Lose?

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on

OK, I'm as American as apple pie, and I've been rooting for every single one of our athletes and teams to win in Rio ... but when we started having problems in basketball against Australia yesterday, a big part of me was thinking, "You know, I'd be OK if Coach K lost this."

If that makes me a bad American, then so ahead and neg me. But I just hate that guy so much, and I hate that I have to root for a team that he's coaching to win. I felt this same way when Kelly Tripucka and Christian Laettner played for the Pistons.

Anybody with me on this?

I have no problems if USA were to lose basketball. It's bullshit that they can go into a competition with a team like that anyway. I miss when the Olympics were supposed to be "amateur" athletes.

What is the reason for your strong dislike of Coach K? I've listened/watched several interviews and he always comes across as a humble and polite man.  Can't say the same for all of his college players, but I don't understand the coach K hate.

IMO, Coach K, love him or hate him, is the #1 reason why our team of NBA all-stars finally broke out of the funk of "me first" basketball in the Olympics and started winning gold medals in 2008.  It took a man of Coach K's force of personality and irreproachable credentials (like Jim Harbaugh in those respects) to mold the best talent in the world into a winning team.

That's overdoing it.  I respect him for giving up his summers to do this but don't think he's done anything remarkable.

We won gold easily in 1992, 1996 and 2000 with NBA guys.  2004 was an unusual case in that almost all of our first-choice guys didn't go (there was a fear of terrorism in Greece at that time), and then Larry Brown exacerbated the problem by making LeBron and the other young guys "pay their dues" on the bench.  It was a perfect storm that wasn't likely to be repeated in 2008, regardless of the coach.

If a UM athlete is representing a foreign country and competing head-to-head against an American, who are we supposed to cheer for?  And does it change your answer if the American athlete is a Buckeye?

I'd cheer for the Michigan athlete, no question.  Whatever connection I have with the U.S. Olympic team is definitely weaker than the connection I have with U-M.

I remember when there was a Brazilian swimmer who went to school here.  I cheered for him bigtime in the Olympics.  By the accident of birth, he wasn't an American.  But he chose to go to our school.

I hate to say it, but I was pulling for Australia to win yesterday.   I don't know if it's the fact that it's kind of funny to see all of these supossed superstars struggling with average NBA players like Paddy Mills or Deladova or Bogut.  At the end of the day I was glad we won, but I would not be upset if they choked.  I do want to see us win in everything else though.

Nope - I'm not.

Would you have rooted for the Russians in '80 if you harbored all sorts of hate for Herb Brooks?

Root for the name on the front of the jersey, fergodssake.

What the fuck is wrong with you?

I was so sad when Australia lost yesterday. All those golden state douchebags are enough to turn me. The living cancer Draymond Green especially. Loved seeing Thompson brick shits as well.

"and I've been rooting for every single one of our athletes and teams to win in Rio ... "

"As a layman, sounds like a Coach K obsession  to me. By rooting for Coach K to lose, wouldn't you, by extension, be contradicting your claim above." Would Coach K be the only U.S. loser on the court if the U.S. were to go down?

I really don't care if they lose. They are extremely highly paid individuals participating - yes, I understand every other country does it as well - in an event that is designed to bring together every four years the best amateurs in the world to promote something far more important than patriotism. Who could honestly cheer against Olga or Nadia, after watching them?  The work they put in to be that great was obvious and to cheer against greatness simply because they were residents of the then USSR would have been pathetic, imo.;

Remember, it's only been a little less than 6 decades ago every spectator in the Shoe stood up to cheer for Tom Harmon.  Often times acknowledging greatness, even if it's performed by someone not wearing your favorite uniform is the right thing. That is actually the lesson sports is supposed to teach.

Coach K has already won medals. If they lose, almost no one points to him. they might point to all the players who skipped out on Rio. they might point to lack of effort of the guys who are there. but I doubt anyone would actually attempt to say that coach K is responsible, even if it'd be somewhat true.

Bad American or not, who cares. But the fact that you want a team to lose just because their head coach, who in this case has virtually zero impact on the end result, is pretty pathetic and out of touch if you ask me.
