OT: 26 tickets to USMNT

Submitted by VintageRandy on September 29th, 2022 at 10:14 AM

ESPN just put out a decent write up of a roster projection for the USMNT ahead of the World Cup. https://www.espn.com/soccer/united-states-usa/story/4755864/projecting-the-usmnt-world-cup-squad-who-wed-take-to-qatar

tl;dr looks like this:

GK: TURNER, Steffen, Horvath

FB: DEST, ROBINSON, Yedlin, Scally, Cannon

CB: ZIMMERMAN, LONG, Carter-Vickers, McKenzie, Richards

Mid: ADAMS, MCKENNIE, Musah, de la Torre, Acosta

Wing: PULISIC, REYNA, AARONSON, Weah, Morris, Arriola

Striker: FERRIERA, Sargent, Pefok

Thoughts? Anyone you think Gregg will call up that isn’t on this list? Anyone that should be left off?

Until Japan it seemed like they had so much confidence and momentum building. Hopefully that's just an outsiders perspective and inside that locker room they're ready to show the world who they are. When will we have a competent striker? Excited to see what Reyna will do on the big stage. Also, I love Weah and hope they play him as much as possible.

Man, I hope Gio Reyna can get healthy and stay healthy. And everyone else.

Guess Pepi was a shooting star - flamed out too soon. I wonder if he'll improve & get back into the mix someday.

The USMNT didn't look so good in the two warm up friendlies. Fire Gregg!

Gregg has a CB problem.

Aaron Long has been mediocre at best in the tuneup. And honestly I think that's actually being pretty forgiving of his performance. And the thing that no one is really wanting to talk about, myself included, is that Zimmerman has had some pretty severe lapses since his great qualifying run in 21. Miles being out is a big blow. Richards with a knock was unfortunate. Sands not getting a look is.... peculiar. Brooks is obviously a pipe dream to settle the squad at this point. The long and the short is we have a CB problem... again.

Curious who gets the call up top. Gregg doesn't seem to be interested in bending to the will of the public opinion. Im curious if he digs in on Pefok. Although, let's not confuse the fact that Pefok has had plenty of opportunities for the national team and done little. But his club form has been impressive lately.

At this point the team just needs to be as healthy as they can be. Then from there, let's see more Weah as a spark. Aaronson as an energy guy/super sub. Musah healthy. Please. And fingers crossed that the stars align.

It would be a mystery if Brooks was only missing from the USMNT. His previous club (Wolfsburg) let his contract expire after his level of play significantly dropped last season. Then he moved to Benfica in Portugal and has literally 1 appearance that lasted for all of two minutes.

I am not one to shy away from critiquing GGG, but John Brooks is currently out of form.

I think this is an accurate representation of the last 30 days. If you "haven't been paying attention" like PutTeam mentioned, then the actual mystery started about a year ago. Like BN said, for whatever reason Brooks... one of the few people who had solid tangible experience on the international stage, one of the few people who had gone through qualifying, a guy who one year and one month ago was one of two guys (Brooks and CP) who were 'locks' for the side... was now unable to even make the team. Gregg wasn't saying and it was less of an issue when Walker Zimmerman and Miles Robinson both stepped up and filled the gap. It was confusing at times when we needed CBs in qualifying, specifically for depth, and Brooks was available and ready to be called in.

Miles has gone down with an injury now and won't be available for Qatar. Richards is my fave to be the other CB but he's alternated between not playing, injury and being out of form. So, we're now rotating through a bunch of guys who aren't in form or arent ready or haven't proven themselves.

As for Brooks' club status... I would only point to the idea that barely anyone would have batted an eyelid if Richards would have been given the starting nod against Japan or SA. Richards having barely played since he transferred over to Palace. Brooks signed with Benfica in early/mid September. He's had 3 or 4 opportunities to get in, he's played in 1. The Portuguese have a 20 year old they want to play and sell at a premium currently rostered ahead of him. It's going to take a little time for JAB to get into that lineup. I'm personally rooting for him.

Why, how, or what tf Gregg is doing... no one knows.

Brooks was the starting CB in marker at the start of WC qualifying this time last year, but Brooks played himself off the roster with his play on the field as much as off of it. He was caught ball-watching as Cyle Larin tapped in an equalizer for Canada in the 1-1 draw. The next game he made a WILD 15-yard sprint off the back line into the midfield to attempt a comically late tackle that led directly to a Honduras goal and was taken off at halftime. When Brooks was left off the roster for the following qualifying window, that is when the reports of the locker room stuff started coming out.

If it was only his US appearances that suffered, I would be more inclined to think this was a Berhalter/USMNT problem, yet Wolfsburg went from being eager to sign him to a lenthy contract extention (as late as September) to letting JB walk out the door on a free transfer six months later. And if Brooks was actually interested in trying to find playing time to work his way back into form, an MLS club would gladly take him on and get him a long run of games to regain his form (ala Gareth Bale)... but he preferred to reserve role to stay in Europe.

To me, this speaks to a player who was born and raised in Europe, who probably does not get along with the current USMNT leadership, and doesn't want to be a part of the US team, especially if he's not going to be an every match starter (see Timmy Chandler).

Believe me, I would love if the John Brooks who was our best field player at the 2014 World Cup and a Bundesliga stalwart for a half-decade was available for this team, but the truth is he's been in poor form for over a year, he's not currently playing for his club at the moment, and he's probably clashed with the manager inside an extremely young locker room.

Again, I think your linked section is a great representation of a 30 day stretch in September.last year. JAB's Wolfsburg "struggles" were as much a result of his bitter contract dispute as it was his play. What it forgets are the YEARS of solid-as-a-rock play that Brooks has had in the back.

But don't get me wrong. He wasn't bulletproof. He absolutely positively did struggle in consecutive matches last Sept, including one I was at and got to see in front of my face. But does that mean he played himself off the roster for good? Hell no.

As far as his contract situation, he was set to sign with La Liga side Mallorca. Then a Champs League team came calling at the last minute and he took the better offer (Benfica). It's not uncommon for a player in Brooks' age category with experience to wait until the end of the window to sign with the best opportunity. Thats when the most money is flying around. He literally signed on deadline day.

I feel like a weird Brooks apologist on this. I think he would be a solid fit and at minimum a smart add by Berhalter for a team that is desperate for CB stability. But there seems to be a lot of weird misinformation flying around.

Lastly, as far as doesn't want to be on the team... here's a quote from Brooks from March of this year.

"Months ago, I accepted responsibility for my play & the decision that kept me off a roster. Now, I'm happy I've regained my form but unfortunately, I wasn't invited to camp," said Brooks, as quoted by Rae.

Brooks continued: "I accept this as the coach's decision, but I won't accept that I can't change this before the final World Cup roster selections. There should be no questions about my desire to play for this team. My plan is to fight as hard as I can to make it back to the [USMNT]."

"My American identity is at stake, an identity some have questioned over many years. We [Americans] have all been down and out at different times, but we always fight back and I plan to do the same."

Does this sound like someone who doesn't want to be on the team? Obviously not. He specifically says he wants to be on the team. But further, he also very specifically sounds like someone who accepts responsibility, understands that sometimes players can be benched, and will take on the role that's given. He just wanted to be given that opportunity.

Like BlueJazz said earlier, this is unequivocably 100% a "Gregg thing." Benched for bad play, sure. But never to be brought back? No way. There have been tons of guys who were benched. Sands was straight trash at Honduras and came back. (just a random example)

So much of this has turned into a Gregg digging in thing. Which is why I won't be surprised if Pefok isn't called in for Qatar. The public "backlash" has been so loud, his response to that is to lean in to himself. I'm sure he'll just do what he does best and put Christian Rondon in a roster spot for no good reason instead.

Or my guess?  Brooks slept with Ime Udoka. Prove me wrong.  :)

Totally agree. The only silver lining is that unlike past CB problems, this one is about the inability to pass and build out of the back, and not about complete defensive lapses that gift the other team an early goal.

I'm not worried about whoever starts defensively, but if Aaron Long is one of our starters we probably aren't scoring very much.

JMo

September 29th, 2022 at 2:25 PM ^

I'm a little worried if Long is starting. I'm not worried about the other three. I'm ABSOLUTELY worried if we have to go to the bench. And you're absolutely correct about how we're starting out of the back. Zim has an ability to bomb some from the back, but well, in Michigan football parlance, his deep ball is JJ vs Maryland accuracy. We need JJ vs UConn accuracy.  But the giveaways, the giveaways, the giveaways ... that will be the death of this team defensively.

Offensively, my read is strictly continuity. They have not played "together" consistently. Either injury (lots of injuries) or Gregg or some combination of fitness, COVID and youth... they just haven't had the opportunity to play enough together. And it shows. They lack the continuity and creativity of a team that has miles under their belts. Their only hope is that it all comes together in November now.

Otherwise, lets just try not to embarrass ourselves and get out of group. From there, anything can happen.

Sands has not been playing well for Rangers - and he hasn't exactly lit the world on fire in his past USMNT call ups. I am fine with him not being on the plane -

Tim Ream and Pefok, on the other hand....

You mention Pefok - while he hasn't looked all too sharp in the USMNT jersey - what strikers have? I would have more patience for this argument if we had three, two, or even one other player that has been lights out in that position.  Truth is, Pefok, Ferraria, Pepi, and Sargent have been a big pile of MEH so you might as well roll the dice with the person who is in club form in a big league.  (He also gives you something a little different than the other three mentioned).

I agree with some of the latter point. As far as not playing well for Rangers, I guess someone should tell Rangers that. He's started 11 of Rangers 14 matches since the beginning of August. Including, and you would assume they took particular interest these lineups, all of the Champs qualifiers playing a full 90 in 3 of the 4 (subbing after a card against PSV).  And then starting in the Champs matches against Ajax and Napoli, full 90 against Ajax... and whomp whomp... a red card against Napoli. So, their champs match against LP next week will be the only one he hasn't started for Rangers since joining the club full time this year.

Sands WAS struggling last year. Sands IS doing quite well this year. Unknown Gregg decisions as to why he didn't get a call into camp.

You listed 27 players. Morris is the obvious one to be left out. He basically offers nothing Arriola doesn't.

Otherwise I think this is probably pretty close, barring injury or some tinkering around the edges. For example, my guess is Pepi is in instead of Pefok, and perhaps another CB instead of McKenzie. Also, if Steffen isn't going to start I could see Sean Johnson being the 3rd keeper instead, because I'm not sure if Steffen is going to be cool just being on the bench.

Also, are your all caps players your starters? If so, there's basically zero chance Musah doesn't start, and I'll be shocked if a healthy Weah doesn't start either.

And damnit, Long better not start.

i duno anymore. im tired of this build up every x years only for us to look flat etc... Are we any good? What are expectations? Can we get out of the group round? Someone who follows this blindly, please share!  I get excited, and let down... lions / jets fan style each time. Just trying to see where expectations should be!

If we have a full roster, like that listed above, we should compete to get out of our group and maybe win one match from there.  If we are missing players do to injury, like we were in the recent friendlies and don't add some leadership to the squad, we will be lucky to get a few points.

I heard Gregg speak at an event, and it was surprising to me how much he talked about 2026 vs this round of the WC.  I think he views this version as a bonus with such a young team and that qualifying was mission #1 and getting out of group is #2.  He did mention the England game the day after Thanksgiving as potentially one of the biggest (and most watched) matches our country has ever played in.

We should be big underdogs there, but for folks who follow American soccer like me, it's rarity, makes it bigger than the Super Bowl to play England.  App State over Michigan type big.

Gregg's biggest problem is that his players are made of glass and his selection sucks.  I like the roster above with some tweaks, but think GBB will get funky with it.

We will also look so much different than the last two putrid friendlies if we are able to bring Musah, Weah, Jedi, CCV and Richards.  But that is like relying on Reyna's hamstring to heal.  If 1/2 of those guys are not available, particularly Musah, we should lower expectations.  If we get out of group, that would be amazing.

On roster, I am a big Sands fan and think he brings versatility (CDM and CB better than Long), but think he's unlikely.  I also think Ream is a no brainer based on what the team just displayed (lack of energy/leadership, a better complement to Zimm, and someone who is familiar w Jedi and played against folks like Wales and England for a living).

I think it should be Ferriera who is left home, but know he is a GB fave, and it needs to come down to Sargent or Pepi staying back...and I think its the right choice to leave Pepi.  If Gregg leaves Pefok home, that would be idiotic given the lack of service, chances and utility he has been able to get out of the position.

I think he will bring SJ over Horvath, but I would bring a dude like GaGa to give him the experience heading into 2026.

And then finally, I am really curious if we get a "Julian Green" project type flyer at the last minute.  I don't think we will, but fun to speculate.  My favorite would be (old guy surprise) Darlington Nagbe or (new guy surprise) Paxton Aaronson or Florian Balogun.

His third problem is that he's wedded to a system that doesn't suit his players.

1. His (apparently) first choice CBs don't pass well but he wants to build the attack through their passing.

2. Adams, who is excellent when facing the play and when partnered with a deep lying mid-fielder (and an excellent progressive passer from that position), doesn't do well receiving the ball from the back line and, therefore, is ineffective as a single pivot (Musah may fix this problem, but only because he's willing to drop deep and is excellent on the half turn).

3. He asks McKennie to receive and distribute the ball in attack, which he's very poor at (he's excellent as a disrupter and with late arriving runs into the box), so most effective attacks go wide.

4. He wants his 9 to drop into midfield to facilitate runs behind, but point 3 renders this tactic ineffective because most attacking action is down the outside. The result is that strikers rarely touch the ball in dangerous spots (the strikers had 5 touches in the box in the 180 minutes of these matches).

IMO, the US would play much better out of a 4-2-3-1, with Adams-Musah and either Pulisic-Reyna-Weah/Aronson or Pulisic-Aaronson-Weah, and either Sargeant or Prefok up top. It doesn't solve the central defense passing problem (maybe Richards would help but he's seen so little game time it's hard to say) but it at least gets players into roles they're better suited for.

BJNavarre

September 29th, 2022 at 12:49 PM ^

The best thing would be to fire Berhalter and bring have an assistant take over. He cares more about whether players fit his "system" than winning games. And I think he also does a poor job of player evaluation as well - someone like Long clearly does not even fit his system, yet he's started the last 6 games.

That aside. I would start Scally over Dest. Musah over Mckennie (assuming Musah retains his pre injury form). Morris should be off the roster. Sargent and Ferreira can play the wing. Brooks and/or Ream over Long and maybe CCV.

Berhalter's unwillingness to incorporate a lot of these guys is frankly unforgivable. I kinda think we're just F'd. 1 point and 2 goals scored might exceed my expectations at this point.

BJNavarre

September 29th, 2022 at 4:31 PM ^

I'm assuming Antonee will be available, and prefer him over either of those guys on the left. I think Dest needs to have a few good games with Milan before you start him over Scally, who is very in form.

That's a pretty minor decision compared to fixing our tactics and the BS that GB continues to roll out at CB.

September 29th, 2022 at 1:17 PM ^

Pefok *should* go, but probably won’t. Scally sure as hell should go, but probably won’t.

If Pefok goes, it may mean GB is bending on his system and is willing to play a countering style. Which Jordan is quite well suited for.

Tim Ream is playing the best soccer of his career in the best league in the world. He needs to be on this team.

I will be pleasantly surprised if Pefok makes the team. The one in form goal scorer in our player pool and he can't get a sniff.

Everyone is arguing about which strikers and which cbs to bring and play. I want to talk about the goalkeeping pecking order!

Turner is the much better shot stopper especially lately. Make him the number one, make Horvath 2 since he's seeing playing time then bring an up and coming talent like Slonina for three!

I know people want the USMNT to be this possession style break down the other team with passes type team, and maybe that dream isn't dead in the long term, but man after seeing the team play worse than the sum of it's parts, I want to see some different tactics.  There's nothing wrong with being a high pressing, counter attacking type of team.  Lots of teams do it at a high level.  The USMNT has athletes.  Just lean into that to punch above your weight.

Needs

September 29th, 2022 at 3:24 PM ^

And high pressing, vertical passing soccer actually fits with the skill sets of some of the team's midfield players (Adams, McKennie, Aaronson, Musah, Weah, Pulisic in particular). None of those guys are particularly well suited to a possession game because they're not elite at holding the ball and passing out of pressure. Reyna is the only player the US has well suited to that style, and Berhalter's system strands him out on the wing.

You could tell the players were uncomfortable with the style and didn't know where the ball was supposed to go because they were picking their heads up and looking at 2-3 options before playing the ball, rather than allowing the ball to flow.

This is to say nothing of how slowly the CBs move the ball.

If the US tries to play possession, it plays right into the hands of every other team in the group.

BoFan

September 29th, 2022 at 4:57 PM ^

The team sucked in the friendlies.  They are not going anywhere with those turnovers in the back third of the pitch. Long and Zimmerman have problems and there are no other options. McKennie has problems with focus and intensity and if these friendlies were another problem with his partying he should be benched.  They need to generate 2X to 3X the scoring opportunities in games like these but they can’t even move the ball up consistently. Their listless play seems more focused on winning a meaningless ball control stat rather than creating opportunities.  And ball control is worthless when you turn it over in the back third.

I heard an interesting point on Sirius XM after this window.  The analyst (don't remember his name) speculated that part of what we're seeing with the mediocrity and missed expectations with the USMNT may have a component related to the media coverage of the team.  Here was his logic....

In England, and most international countries, the general population is following their team like a religion (not unlike why we're all here on MGoBlog for Michigan coverage).  The media in those countries has no need to drum up fan interest in the sport or national team - it is already there.  Thus the media coverage in those countries is more critical and measured - setting expectations more aligned with likely outcomes.

In the US, the media and fan sites have a bias (whether conscious or unconscious) to rally support around the team in a crowded sports landscape.  Therefore the coverage tends to focus on more hype, the positive, grabbing any glimmer of potential from an outcome (Gold Cup) or player (Pulisic) and throwing that out as a reason to follow the sport.  The result is to inflate expectations beyond what is realistic.

The US has indeed made progress.  We did well in our region and are squarely in the World Cup.  We may be able to snag some points in the group stage.  We are still not a top-15 team relative to the rest of the world and still have depth problems, coaching concerns, injuries to top players, and structural limitations.  Finally, while no one would question England's status relative to the US, it isn't like their international performance has been stellar for a long time and Italy, another long standing hotbed for talent, isn't even participating for the second Cup in a row.

September 29th, 2022 at 6:34 PM ^

I heard an analyst say a slightly different variation of this idea, namely that the US has far more soccer fans who are exclusively fans of their national team than soccer fans around the world, where national teams are often a sideline to the club teams that are their central passion (which makes perfect sense). So the US has supporters that are exclusively fans of the national team, which doesn't really happen elsewhere.

This kind of leads the same place, essentially the focus on the "glimmers of potential" you mention, and less criticism of national team managers (until things really fall apart), because in other countries, national team selections are enmeshed in club rivalries and club loyalties (see the furor among Liverpool fans about Trent Alexander-Arnold being left out of the England side).

Anecdotally, in England, friends have told me the most dedicated national team supporters tend to be supporters of lower table clubs, as the national team is free of disputes over whether their players are called up (which can go in strange ways. My friend who's a lifetime Liverpool fan hopes Alexander-Arnold is left off the team so he doesn't get hurt).
