OT: '17-'18 Depth Chart: Version 2 ("Just Something To Look At Edition")

Submitted by Mr. Yost on

Notes:

  1. I'm not ready to let him go. I'm not taking him off. I don't care what you say. Until there's an announcement...he stays.
  2. Same for Mo Hurst.
  3. I don't know the EE freshman, so I can't really predict who's going to play and who isn't. It's November of the year before...I really don't care at this point.
  4. I realize this is Michigan-related and technically not "OT" - but it's still way too far away to be ON topic, IMO...just some fantasy to take your mind off of poor officiating which is the only topic. (By "poor" I mean absolute dog shit, worst ever, sparking legit conspiracy theories type officiating)
  5. I realize we're likely going to have 1-2 QBs transfer.
  6. I will try and go back and update this throughout the year to keep it as current as possible.

We will feel the absence of these guys:
Peppers
Taco
Glasgow
Lewis
Stribling
Gedeon (imo, especially when considering our roster)
Allen (forget the Wisconsin game and think of the tremendous punting, especially in The Game)

We'll miss these guys but I think we can develop their replacement :
Smith
Butt (great receiver. Not a good blocker)
Darboh
Chesson
Braden
Kalis
Mags
Godin
Thomas
Hill

The problem is, that's a lot of positions to get gane-ready and prepared for Florida. There's no way we don't endure a bunch of "WTF" moments while playing so many young guys.

We will miss Wormley a LOT also.

Agree on the rest of the analysis.

Could be some rough spots on D early in the season.

On the glass half full side of things, Florida does not have great offense, so hopefully M can get the W, and then use ther est of September to improve and mature before the MSU game on Oct. 7th.

Really?

There will be an open competition, but with what Speight did this year he will be hard to unseat.

I know people have three turnovers from last Saturday fresh in their minds, but Speight was overall really good at all the stuff many don't think about.  The pre-snap reads.  The post-snap decision making.  Leadership.

Not saying Speight is (or is not) a future Heisman winner, but he was pretty good this year.

We all know that Peters has the skill set and looks to have a great arm.  But we have no data on his leadership abilities, how he performs under pressure, how well he will do understanding defensive alignments, etc., etc.

Plus, anyone who thinks Peters is likely to be the starter is also ignoring that Speight will also improve during Spring practice and during the summer.  He has shown an ability to iprove a ton both during this season and also last Spring/summer.

That is great for him. Otherwise I was thinking he would have to transfer this year to get 2 years playing elsewhere. I doubt he sees much action next year but will be a great 2nd backup assuming both JOK and Morris go the grad-transfer route.

On the RBs, I wouldn't be surprised if both Isaac (Illinois or NW?) and Johnson (EMU, WMU?) seek playing time elsewhere for their 5th (or 6th) years. Unless Isaac is dealing with an injury it seems he has been passed by Higdon and Evans -- and I think Walker fits the "bruiser" mold that those 2 may lack. Of course last year most of us (not you UMbig11!) were projecting a Higdon transfer for PT so who the heck really knows.

If Peters beats out Speight, he's really, really good. Very difficult to beat out an experienced starter, especially one who played as well as Wilton did this year.

Kaepernick beat out Smith, so Harbaugh is definitely willing to make a bold move. This circumstance is totally different though - Speight and Peters are nothing like Smith and Kaep.

No matter what happens, QB is a position of strength next year, and probably will be as long as JH is at the helm.

Peters will be QB. Speight isn't a Harbaugh guy as much as he's a fixer up project QB. I'm pretty sure Jim's over those. He would have just beat the number 2 team in the country in a place we haven't won in 16 years if he had half way decent QB play. Speight cost us the Iowa game in reality as well. Great kid but Peters will be the guy next year.

The OSU game was the almost the best of times and worst of times for Speight.  If it wasn't for Speight the offense probably doesn't score 17 points.  Speight was 23-36.  3 of the incompletions were balls that Butt and Darboh (2) could have caught.  Another two of the incompletions were blatant pass interference that wasn't called (Perry, Darboh).  The reason they were moving the ball on OSU was because of Speight's passing.

There was very little running game to support the passing game.  43 carries for 91 yds, and even if you take out the 3 sacks, it was only 40 carries for 108 yds.

People are only remembering the errors.  I am not forgetting/dismissing/downplaying the errors, but Speight was pretty good the rest of the game, outside of three plays.  And on one INT many have stated that the ball was tipped.

Not saying Speight is a future Heisman winner.  But look at Josh Rosen at UCLA.  He has made a ton of mistakes.

People look at Peter's HS tape (which is superb but that ain't playing against OSU), and hear 'practice buzz' (heard that for O'Korn too so...), and are SURE that Peters will unseat Speight.

Possible, but unlikely.

Spring game will be interesting.

Hopefully Peters pushes Speight hard.

Hopefully Speight builds on his overall impressive first year as a starter to get even better for 2017.

And hopefully Peters is as good or even better, giving M two guys that can take us into the 4th quarter winning or close, and then finish every week.

I was in the "Peters overtakes Speight in '17" camp for a long time but I've changed my tune. It's his job.. In a perfect world Speight takes another step forward and is on the NFL radar, leaves with one year of eligibility left and Peters takes over as a RS Soph in 2018 after backing up Speight next year.

I'd be shocked if Grant Newsome played at all next year, let alone started. I think his career is over, unfortunately.

Pretty solid guesses but I'd have DPJ opposite Crawford at WR, Asiasi at TE1, Bredeson likely stays at LG (he's not a T) and JBB is the RT, not sure Kugler is a starter. As much as we'd all love it, I don't think Peppers stays... sorry. I think Hudson and Furbush will split that spot, depending on the offensive packages and Metellus comes in at S when Hudson moves down to Viper. I feel good about Hurst staying though, unless he gets a first-round grade then he's likely gone too.. I don't think the OL is championship caliber until at least 2018 but the offense could very well take a step forward, while the D takes a small step back. A LOT of freshmen should see the field once again.

He has had several superb plays this year.

But I cannot imagine he will be a first rounder this year.

Because he was behind some incredible players, he has not yet shown that he can consistetly play a high number of downs and have the same motor at the end of the game as at the beginning.

Seems like this is a situation where he would significantly improve his draft stock by staying one more year.
