I don't follow your logic.  What does having friends who went there have anything to do it being a good school?  I have a bunch of friends who went to Grand Rapids Community College.  So what?

All that means is that because of your friends, you have some bias in favor of the school.  One of my coworkers who I think is really smart went to University of Idaho, so my opinion of that school is probably better than it actually is.

This is not a knock on you or your friends as people, but Ole Miss is not a good school.

I agree. Especially for undergrad, I think you make your experience what you want. At times as a MICHIGAN student I felt compelled to study when I maybe didn't want to, but because everyone else was. Then there were those friends/fellow students who did nothing but talk about how much work they had and how hard they studied and you'd think, whatever ...we're all fucking smart here. But if you're at Mississippi State (I know, not Ole Miss ..I know a lot of Bulldogs) student and nobody gives a shit about going to class, you're going to skip too. Hackey Sack or Fris on the Diag was always an option during the last three weeks of class, but that's another thing ....when the weather sucks in the winter, why not stay inside and study??? Takes a lot of discipline to 4.0 at San Diego State!

most of the colleges that aren't 'elite' for undergrad do things that seriously undermine your claim, like allowing high school kids to enroll, and half of the lecture will be empty. This forces the exams to be made easier and it's just a remedial trickle down effect. Most the kids who go to Michigan would just be wasting their time at such places, unless it's a program they naturally struggle with

Get him up to campus a couple times or when MJ shows up for a game and then see who wins this one. Muhahaha!

We all know that certain schools such as Bama, OSU, USC. Oregon and Ole Miss pay their players.  I can't imagiane anyone going to one of those schools and not getting paid, especially once they found out how much some of their teammates are getting.  If kids don't want people to assume they are getting paid, maybe they can try signing with a clean school.

I think they deserve the money anyway.  I tend to be more pissed at the schools for being dishonest than the kids for taking the money.

Oxford, MS is actually pretty nice (Starkville is a dump).  Home of William Faulkner and whatnot.  Cute downtown, with good bars and a decent music scene.  Gay is from MS.  And MS reportedly has some of the most ... fetching coeds in the whole U.S.

And if a kid wants to stay in Mississippi, an Ole Miss degree will in most instances get him farther (as far as opening doors) than a Michigan degree.

Finally, Ole Miss may be very comfortable for him.  When the kid from Nebraska suddenly decides that they always wanted to go to Ole Miss, that's fishy.  This one doesn't strike me that way.

Thank for your the lucid and gracious thoughts.  This place is starting to sound like the Red Cedar Message Board.  The fact is that there are places all over -- north, south, east, and west -- that have charm and are doing some pretty cool things.  Yes, Oxford, MS is one of them.  If you don't think the whole Grove thing on a Saturday is pretty compelling stuff then, well, you should be on RCMB.

"If you dont want me to assume you're a shitty person, don't go to Bama, OSU, USC or Oregon... also known as some of the best football programs in the country"... huh? That's absurd. Besides, if you think the only way those programs get top kids is paying every last one of them, you're kidding yourself. Many have very normal recruiting processes, yes, even at your so-called "dirty schools".

Yes, but on the other hand, when you been caught cheating over and over, don't be surprised if your reputation suffers.  Some of these schools -- Ole Miss at the top of the list -- deserve the scorn they get when a 5-star from Illinois flashes their cash.  But there are other Southern schools that have records that I believe are just as good as ours.  I hate it when I mention Michigan and someone says, "Oh, that's because you pay your players!"  Where is the shred of evidence for that?  But the same is true for Georgia, Clemson, and others.  Some of these schools don't need to cheat to get top recruits.  I just took my son for his freshman orientation at Clemson.  If we had seen that campus, etc., half of Bursley Hall my freshman year would have transfered there by mid-January.  So, I agree, not everybody is cheating down South.  But those who are deserve the suspicion they get.

To be fair, there are things which would attract people to Oxford, Mississippi. For example, you can visit William Faulkner's typewriter and you can hang out by Eli Manning's house until you are politely asked to leave. There's also densely forested clay-laden hills all around you there, so there's stuff to see, but you have to go up to Memphis to find most of it.

Great title. Regardless of whether or not he got paid, I find it fascinating that there is so much $ to go around to athletes there when MS is consistently the poorest state in the country. Weird
