Nuss's pay - not as high as rumored?
Nussmeier will not make more than Mattison, Brandon said.
“We put together a package for Doug that’s consistent with what we’ve done at Michigan,” said Brandon, adding they have not yet signed a contract.

Brandon seemed pretty rattled when the reporters asked him about compensation, saying that he didn't think reports of Nuss being in the top five were true because "that information is often very hard to find."
Hey Dave, you are part of a PUBLIC university now. I can find out what any UM employee makes from the general fund within ten seconds - it's all online. Him trying to play coy is really annoying.

well, apparently the contract doesn't even exist yet. so... it would be very hard to find.
January 10th, 2014 at 4:27 PM ^
It's hard to find what makes a top five compensation when not all of the schools have to report salaries. There are also various bonuses.
January 10th, 2014 at 4:51 PM ^
under the FOIA I believe. Since Northwestern, Vandy, Baylor, and Stanford are probably not amongst the top paying schools I would say it is pretty easy. Publications like USA Today release salary rankings for coaches all the time.
January 10th, 2014 at 4:54 PM ^
are all private schools who don't have to report coordinator pay. Why does it even matter if Brandon knows his guy is in the top or not? Also, public school reports do not necessairly include bonuses and perks (usage of cars, cell phones, bringing spouces on recruiting trips...)

Yeah, but isn't that only the base salary, which would show Hoke at something like $300k? I don't think that database would give the actual amount, since a good deal comes from outside funding...

There is a rumor that Borges actually quit. Also, I've heard that this was 100% Dave Brandon's hire. There is another rumor that Hoke wanted Parish to be the OC. Who knows what is true or not. Originally the first choice was the OC from UCLA. There is a rumor that he turned the job down.

unsubstantiated rumors based on what some talking head says on the radio, at least you should identify it as such instead of pretending you have some kind of inside information because you're just SO well connected.

I heard a rumor that Barack Obama thinks politics should be freely discussed on the MGoBoard and that Pope Benedict XVI wanted Zoltan Mesko to be demoted from Space Emperor of Space, which is why he was overthrown by the Illuminati.
Also, Craig James and Jenny Craig got married after meeting at Hooker Killers Anonymous, and he hyphenated his last name to be Craig James-Craig.
Allegedly.
I also heard a rumor that I'm not wearing pants.

i don't think given magnus's performance in 2013 that he deserves to not be wearing pants.

VAlenti has so much UM envy it is laughable and pathetic. Instead of doing shows on MSU basketball or football they are devoting a whole show to DB's presser and think they are Sherlock Holmes discovering DB runs the show. Really?! DB is sort of our Jerry Jones in love with the spot light? No kidding? WOW! That's newsworthy...I don't care who makes the decisions as long as they are good ones. Nuss looks like a home run. Now let's go win more games! End of story.

If Borges quits he does not paid for the last year of his contract. The offical announcement of his depature stated that he would get paid and provided the amount subject to offsets. If the terms of Borges' contract in this regard are the same as Hoke's, which is generally part of the boilerplate, then, under the contract, the University does not have the option to pay him.
While it's possible that Al quit and through the goodness of its heart the University amended his contact so they could buy out the remainder of his contract. It seems pretty unlikely.

Brandon is quoted as saying "Nussmeier will not make more than Mattison."
To me it doesn't say Nuss isn't getting what was reported. He could in fact be earning over $1 million/year, but they may have bumped Mattison. For example, if Mattison has a clause in his deal that stiuplates that he's always the highest paid coordinator on the staff (I'm not saying he actually does, I have no idea) then maybe GM got a raise, too.
It's just interesting how Brandon worded it. There's plenty of wiggle room in that statement
He also said, “We put together a package for Doug that’s consistent with what we’ve done at Michigan"
That can be construed a couple of ways, too. What's consitent with what they've done? They have dramatically increased pay over the past few years (Gerg's final year was $250k, while Mattison's first year was $750k, and this year his base is $851k).
So jumping both coordinators into the million dollar range is consistent with what they've been doing. Keeping their coordinators among the highest-paid in football is consistent.
Maybe they didn't bump Mattison and gave Nuss $850k, but made it incentive laden so that if he hits certain metrics he crosses the million dollar mark (Mattison's first contract had $150k bonus for winning the B1G). That would be consistent with what they've done, too.
I guess we won't know until the FOIA is filed after the contract is signed. But in the meantime, I don't take Dave's words to mean he isn't necessarily getting a 7-figure deal.
January 10th, 2014 at 7:13 PM ^
they struck with Nusseimer. Same salary as GM (after his yearly boast) and bonuses for goals he meets in 2014. Conceivably the total package could exceed one million dollars.
Regarding Saban and Nuss leaving the program consider that expectations at Alabama are NC or else. I have no doubt Nuss and Smart were scapegoated by Saban for Alabama's failure to repeat as NC. I am sure Nuss was relieved to get out when Hoke threw him a lifeline.
Hell, even Saban was looking to get out until the redid his contract with a good pay increase and additional job security provisions.

Hoke didn't give Borges cart blanche?
There isn't a concept in any football playbook that Al didn't try to implement. So are you saying that Brady was forcing Al to try 8 million concepts without focusing on 1. I could see Brady beign responsible for the stubbornness that leads to 27 for 27, but as a whole I'm not sure Brady was much into offensive micromanagement.
