NIL friendly player t-shirt

Submitted by magonus on September 20th, 2021 at 7:30 AM

Anyone know if any Michigan players have partnered with one or more sites/stores to sell legit t-shirts? I'd like to buy a Corum shirt and there are several sites selling them, but I want to make sure I go through a site that's giving him a cut.

I haven’t seen anything announced for Corum besides the Yoke Gaming thing that came out as soon as NIL was permitted.

you can get a custom jersey from MDen and choose current student athletes and he gets a cut of his jersey sales as do most of the players.

Real question: can we just start gofundme campaigns to directly give to players? I'd donate to that.

Also, it's nice to have Michigan shirts, so it's not like this usurps the question being asked in this thread. But if the goal is to give money to players, gofundme campaigns would be way more effective than buying a shirt.

The whole point of NIL is to allow the players to be compensated for the use of their Name, Image and Likeness (get it, NIL?) They’re not being paid for the sake of being paid. They’re using their popularity to promote/advertise products, restaurants etc. and being compensated for it.

Just giving them money is still against the rules.

The NCAA is going to characterize it as a gift.

You need to structure it as a commercial transaction because the rules only permit players to earn compensation in exchange for the commercial use of their identity. The commercial use needs to be reasonable in consideration of the amount paid, otherwise the alarm bells are going to start going off with the authorities. In other words, paying Corum $200,000 to make a single Instagram post saying "Darker Blue's Carwash is the best carwash in town!" is almost certainly not going to fly w/ the NCAA or the IRS.

No, but I think if someone were to start a "company" that pooled money from fans and that "company" gave money to players for a "promotion" then it would be fine. Anyone who has been paying attention to what other schools are doing knows that no one is following the rules and it's just pay for play

I agree. I want to get as high of a % of my money directly to the athlete. I reached out to  Sydney Sims - Director of Strategic Communications and Branding at U of M but no response hoping for some information.

I understand the University is not directly involved but was hoping for some kind of response, but no go.
