Night games for rivalry games -- DISCUSS

Submitted by DISCUSS Man on

Your thoughts on them and should they happen here?

I say no because of the fighting idiots outside the game after a 3:30 kickoff.

Read the pushback so I went to the source (the same way I did when there was a disagreement about kick time for the 2004 MSU game, when I correctly stated it was at 3:30 instead of 4:30 as some were mistakenly claiming, confusing it with 2006).

Box score for the game is here.

Verdict: I am 100% wrong. Actual kick time is listed as 3:44, which is of course the 3:30 time slot. And then my memory hearkens back to those painful final minutes and it was dark. My recollection of the networks clearing the deck of interesting games was, I think, accurate, but I had the time totally off. I believe I confused it with 2004 (which I attended) and 2005, which were both 1pm kickoffs per the boxscores.

It doesn't count for much, since my statement was categorical, but in my defense I lived in California at the time and the kick times were a bit vague over there. But perhaps I should have thought about whether I recalled watching the game in the morning (1pm kick would happen at 10am and that certainly wasn't when I watched it) before I opened my big mouth.

*2005 was a 1pm kick and I did see that in the morning; a friend with some cash to burn then convinced me to make the hour and a half road trip to LA to catch a USC game so I could see the Bush-Leinart team in person, wound up seeing Reggie Bush gain 500 all-purpose yards in a thrilling 50-42 win over Fresno State.

Everyone always has the "arguments" but zero realistic evidence to back it up. That's what is most annoying. Also that everyone else can do it and minimize the problems, yet everyone seems to think we're somehow a different case.

The weather is too unpredictable for that late in the year.  Plus you may have to turn around and play the next Saturday.

I can live with a 3:30 or 4PM start to The Game, but that's it.

In favor. I was at 2011 ND and it was kickass. More time to tailgate and party during the day. The atmosphere was incredible. I don't think that there's anything wrong with playing night games, as long as they're on Saturday (none of this playing on Thursday crap that Cincinnati always seems to pull).

that's because I'm an old fart who grrew up watching Bo.  That being said, I am willing to take one for the team and push back my 10:00 bedtime to stand in the Big House and give it my all for Michigan.

3:30 is ideal for tailgating for anyone who actually cares about getting into the Stadium in time to see the band, which I do. I figure I start to eat at 1 or 1:30, an ideal lunch slot. Sit, enjoy company, and then clean up at 2:15 or 2:30 for the walk to the Stadium.

Noon games were trickier but you can do it if you commit to doing a breakfast tailgate. We have had a Coleman Road Trip grill for our entire marriage and the optional griddle tops are really useful for cooking breakfast items. You do get a better shot at watching the late games that way.

First and foremost, I do like the tradition of The Game involving the idea that - at least most years - it is a noon kick. It hasn't always been one (I remember 2006 being at 3:30 PM, and I believe it was a few years before that as well), but that just seems to be part of the story for that game each year.

As for OSU or MSU being an night game at any point, all I can say is that - if things continue as they seem to be and we're talking about matchups between ranked teams most the time these games are played - I bet the networks at least ask about them being on the evening slate. I assume schools can say "no way", but I have to think the question will come up.

A lot of the arguments for noon starts are that it "gets the game out of the way" early.

I don't want to just "get the game out of the way".  I wait all year for Michigan football.  The game is the main event, not something to get out of the way.

No. I don't even like 3:30 for those games, because it's already dark by the time it's over. We had ND and Penn State as night games with no major problems. We have a 3:30 game with MSU and fights galore. No thanks.

For fans, when the weather is nice it is a good party- but it pretty much precludes doing much else that afternoon/night, and you miss other games you'd like to watch. Night games are nice in September, when you can avoid the sun and heat of the afternoon.  But come October, November it's nice to get the sun when you are in the stands to warm you a bit.

Players do like to play in night games- AT HOME.  They suck on the road, because it means flying back sometime early Sunday morning. It throws your schedule and preparation off for the next week- and then there are possible travel delays.

What if PSU decides Michigan is a rival, and wants an 8PM start in Happy Valley?  Michigan then has to hope its flight from State College is not delayed, rerouted or canceled due to wind or fog (my folks live in central PA, believe me, it's often a problem).  That could mean a flight delayed till the next morning of...Ohio State week.  Or if Michigan plays late at Columbus and gets delayed coming back, the week of the B1G championship game.

Recruits want to play under the lights.

TV under the lights are the best , & have the most viewers.

Fans are the most rowdy under the lights.

Chics in the stands look hotter under the lights. See LSU game last week for example ...

Enough said~

I prefer the noon-kicks by far:

a) it's early enough, so only true fans are interested in the game (I can't tell you how often I scored tickets for free/cheap as a undergrad and grad student because people were hungover, or tired, or just wanted to relax

b) there's nothing better than tailgaiting at 8am, it basically, again, ensures everyone there is there because they really want to be there

and c) the games are over around 4-ish and thus there's still plenty of daylight/postgame activities that day and into the night if necessary.

The night games rock, no doubt. And I'd always like to have one per season. But the 3:30 and later stuff is a pure money-move. It's all about getting closer to primetime, that's it. It's also right in the middle of the day, and really prevents you from doing big things either before or after. And then the night games, I'm too antsy to do much else before the game. I never get anything done at all.

Packer fans have no problems with night games ...& it's colder there.

Start at 7 - done at 10 for other games.

OSU game ...3:30 is good IMO.

"I need time to drown my sorrows in alchol

After we piss away rivalry games"

For above ... we won't ever see that happen again with JH, how that game ended. I would have to believe the meeting JH had with Baxter, didn't go so well for Baxter either.
