Seems weird to do it for just a year...
But I'm happy he's back. He can take #1 if he wants. He'd wear it well.
January 7th, 2020 at 10:29 PM ^
Interesting point about only for one year. I guess I'd assumed plenty others only donned the number for a year (before finally earning it) but maybe I'm way off on that and it typically was possessed for multiple years.
WD where you at?!

Every #1 at Michigan-
January 7th, 2020 at 10:45 PM ^
Didn't realize Kipke wore it. Thanks for sharing
January 7th, 2020 at 11:03 PM ^
More like Angus G.O.A.T.s, right?
January 7th, 2020 at 11:05 PM ^
GRIEVES!!!!!
January 7th, 2020 at 11:07 PM ^
Huh, no one wore it for 51 years. I find that interesting.
January 7th, 2020 at 11:13 PM ^
Was there a CFB rule prohibiting it at the time?
January 8th, 2020 at 10:24 AM ^
EDIT: No, but in 1941, the single digits left our rosters and did not return until 1974.
January 8th, 2020 at 11:06 AM ^
I don't think it really became a thing until AC.

All HAIL the SUPERGUIDE!!!!!!!!!
This is great, thanks WD

I'm confused. Listening to Braylon, I thought he was the only player to ever wear it.
January 8th, 2020 at 1:42 PM ^
thumbs down because this took you ten minutes to respond

Lame take that it's weird, he deserves the #1 for coming back as a senior with his production this past season. He will surpass that in 2020.
The only reciever on the roster that could bid for #1 besides Nico is Bell.
If we are going to put tradition in our mouth's, the #1 jersey was our best wide receiver in years past. (Seems we've lost that tradition)
How long has it been since we have had a wide receiver wear the #1 that deserved it?
January 7th, 2020 at 11:35 PM ^
Braylon . So it’s been over 15 years
January 8th, 2020 at 1:21 AM ^
Manningham was worthy of the #1 jersey.

Indeed, it was The New Math.

"The only reciever on the roster that could bid for #1 besides Nico is Bell."
This is true. I love Bell - easily the most underrated 'croot we've seen in these here parts in decades. He's a game changer, and a clear candidate for best WR on the team. But (and there's always a 'but', right?), he needs to make catches on plays like PSU and the 3rd&9 agaisnt Bama where he stepped out. There are others that he just missed, also - though Shea could be fairly blamed (and should be) for most of them. Until he starts grabbing those few types of passes, Nico is a clear #1 over him. I'm looking forward, though, to Nico taking two with him, and Bell being open everywhere on the field. With Jackson, Sainristill, and Evans between those two, my Gawd...
Hope springs anew each year!
January 8th, 2020 at 10:16 AM ^
I just assumed that #1 when to the shortest guy on the team like in little league.
January 8th, 2020 at 1:17 PM ^
If you think Ronnie Bell 2019 shows that Ronnie Bell 2020 doesn't deserve #1 due to dropped passes, then have a look at Braylon Edwards 2002 and let me know your thoughts.
January 7th, 2020 at 11:37 PM ^
i agree. if he wants, he should have it. reward him for his loyalty.
January 8th, 2020 at 8:15 AM ^
Does this mean we are going to hear for a full season how Nico hit that 3 point jumper against Houston?
January 8th, 2020 at 1:21 PM ^
So freaking pumped he’s back.
January 7th, 2020 at 10:27 PM ^
Would very much welcome it
January 7th, 2020 at 10:31 PM ^
Let's first make sure that BRAYLON EDWARDS would be OK with the idea.
Seriously, Ambry Thomas is the only #1 listed on the roster, so it would be easy for Nico to take it, too.
January 7th, 2020 at 10:38 PM ^
Is Ambry declaring for the NFL Draft?
January 7th, 2020 at 10:41 PM ^
There can be multiple #1s on the team. In 2017 we had Crawford at WR and Ambry at CB both wearing #1.
January 7th, 2020 at 10:42 PM ^
No but unless they start putting him out there on offense, it would be fine to have two #1s. Duplicating numbers is fairly common as long as they're not on any of the same units.
January 7th, 2020 at 10:45 PM ^
We have four guys wearing #23.
January 7th, 2020 at 10:47 PM ^
I get it. Just asking if there is any correlation?
January 8th, 2020 at 12:04 AM ^
This year seemed to have a ton of duplicate numbers, and they were going to guys getting lots of playing time. I don't remember it being THAT common before.
January 8th, 2020 at 12:36 PM ^
If I remember correctly we were penalized in a game during the Rich-Rod era for 2 players being on the field with the same number. I don't remember the game or circumstances, but it was such an odd penalty that it has been trapped in my mind for years.
January 8th, 2020 at 12:37 AM ^
Didn't Ohio State have a player wear a second jersey over their primary number in The Game this season in order to be on the field in multiple phases?
January 8th, 2020 at 1:23 AM ^
Yes, when they wear multiple jerseys they get paid twice or three times per game.
January 8th, 2020 at 8:42 AM ^
Side note here, seems like Ambry should be on offense. Speed in space and all.
January 7th, 2020 at 10:34 PM ^
He deserves it more than any receiver since Braylon, or maybe Manningham.
January 7th, 2020 at 11:00 PM ^
Not challenging you, but where would Chesson rank on that power list?
January 7th, 2020 at 11:09 PM ^
Ever so slightly behind his teammate, Amara Darboh. Darboh doesn't get enough recognition for how many bad passes he turned into spectacular catches.
January 8th, 2020 at 6:00 AM ^
I'll never forget his one handed stab against BYU
fun times...our collective hopes were so so high back then.
January 7th, 2020 at 11:22 PM ^
I would put him in the Darboh/Greg Matthews/Adrian Arrington group of very talented guys who all made memorable plays, but just didn't quite feel like "big time" receivers who could consistently take over a game against good teams.
Funchess probably deserved it based on ability, but had injuries and played on bad teams, so he never had the numbers.
Junior Hemingway seems like he would have been a good #1, especially with some of the things he did in 2011.
January 8th, 2020 at 9:01 AM ^
Greg Matthews' best year had 400 yards receiving and 2 TDs. He had another year with 3 TDs.
Arrington's was 882 with 8 TDs.
Hemingway peaked at 699 with 4 TDs.
Darboh had 826 (7 TDs) and another 700+ season.
We remember Hemingway because of his jump ball catches. Matthews shouldn't be in the same conversation as the other 3, especially Darboh and Arrington.
January 8th, 2020 at 10:14 AM ^
Jesus, that was all that Greg Matthews did? For some reason I remember him being better, but that's probably just because he played during the Rich Rod years.
January 7th, 2020 at 11:38 PM ^
Nope. Jeremy Gallon.
January 8th, 2020 at 12:17 AM ^
Roy Roundtree would like a word
January 7th, 2020 at 10:35 PM ^
I'm all for it
January 7th, 2020 at 10:35 PM ^
He's earned it and who knows, it may bring some sense of pride back to Michigan Football.
Either way he should be in for a huge year ?♂️〽️
January 7th, 2020 at 11:13 PM ^
He absolutely deserves it. Guy's gonna be a hell of a leader on our offense next year.
January 7th, 2020 at 10:37 PM ^
Hell yes!
January 7th, 2020 at 10:45 PM ^
Absolutely--he's more than earned it.
I get the argument that others made back when we unretired all the numbers that it makes it harder to make a new number memorable. I agree for all other numbers. But the #1 is too cool to pass up.
