External heel counter which (best of my understanding) helps stabilize the foot motion and "forces" a more neutral heel strike pattern. I would guess it's also to aid in lateral stability, given that this is likely a "training" shoe rather than a pure running shoe.

I'm not a fan of heel counters, but I'm also not a fan of motion control/stability shoes in general.

I'm becoming more and more convinced that the Michigan apparel design team is full of Suckeye fans.

They do enough to show that they spend an exorbitant amount of time on it, but with intent in mind that the guy wearing it looks undeniably ridiculous. That's without even considering the cost the onlookers would know you've paid to do so.

It's not that damn hard! I'm sure we'd be happy with re-treads of older classics in Michigan colors with a Block M slapped on it.

(Yes Ma'am, I'm aware this is a Popeye's)

WD, you are my official arbiter on official M gear like this, and I don’t even know why. Although, in this case and many others, I give the thumbs down automatically when there’s not really much yellow to found. Then they’re just navy blue sneaks.

the first thing i look for in a stylish shoe is whether there is a tiny plastic visor attached to the heel for some reason. big plus if the visor obscures a more essential design, like a team logo. 11/10.
