Interesting what this bodes for Scott Frost. Moos hired Frost and I imagine the new AD isn't going to be in so love with him if he has another mediocre season. I'm sure they'll want to bring in their own guy for the position
except SURPRISE HIRE it's SCOTT FROST'S MOMmmmmm
...which, ok i guess his job could still be in jeopardy, true
Posting this at the top so more people see it. Not directly responding to StateStreetApostle's comment...
According to ESPN, he retired. Not fired, let go, or "canned" as the OP so delicately put it.
Knowing this bit of info, I will have to cross off
canned moose
... on my grocery list.
I wonder if Meijer sells aged moose steaks at the meat counter.
Be sure to check the expiration date on the steaks.
Okay, before I read any more of the comments, I wonder what the Over/Under on Scott Frost comments is. And the Over/Under on references to Scott Frost's mom?
Like the two above this post?
Yes, including them. That's why I wrote "before I read any more of the comments."
The timing strongly implies some sort of personal malfeasance. Nebraska football has not been a beacon (or bastion) of success lately, but basketball has shown unexpected signs of life and the remaining programs all seem successful enough.
E: Added an alternate description of Nebraska's nonsuccess to mollify East Quad.
Local paper pointing to him being 70 (retirement) and the end of the AD fiscal year being reasons for timing. Could be a lot of things - no need to assume malfeasance
You're right. The phrasing of the original tweet made it sound like Nebraska fired Moos. I took that implication and jumped to a tenuous conclusion. Your additional context shifts the needle away from malfeasance and toward retirement, although the sudden announcement does raise questions. Both Moos' age and the department's fiscal year are known factors. If this was a planned retirement, why not announce it in advance and start the search for a new athletic director as soon as possible?
I'm going to engage in some completely unfounded speculation for my own enjoyment. This feels more a little like a forced retirement. I would guess that someone at Nebraska had been turning the screws behind the scenes. Moos either decided to get out now while the timing made sense or got offered a buyout in lieu of getting shown the door down the road.
His contract went through 12/31/22, and he had repeatedly said he wanted to see it through, as they're also in the midst of a $155M facility expansion.
He didn't just suddenly decide to hang it up.
I found some additional information that I posted below. It sounds like Moos treated his job as a sinecure. He spent as little time in Lincoln as possible, popped in for the occasional football game or media appearance, and hired new subordinates to do the actual work of running the athletic department.
sinecure

+1 from a classics major
Too lazy to google it. Wtf does that mean?
A sinecure is a job with pay, but no responsibilities.
beacon v. bastion
I prefer the latter with success. Beacon goes better with light.
Bullwinkle prefers Moos.
At your insistence, I added an alternate description. I would ask if you are satisfied yet, but you are a Michigan fan and posting on a Friday morning. I think I can safely assume that the answer would be a resounding no.
Not insistent and never satisfied. But, +1 to you for not taking offense.
Probably coincidence, but there's a big article in today's WSJ about how he and Nebraska are trying to be at the vanguard of the new NIL competition.
Basketball shows signs of life?!?!? They have only had a winning record in the B1G 2x. The most recent in 2018. Hoiberg has 14 total wins in 2 years!!! Signs of life are very weak.
ESPN's article directly states that he retired. He was not fired, let go, or "canned" as the OP so delicately put it:
Have a Moos instead.
He's gone. It's a moos point.
No thanks. Moos bytes kan be pretti nasti...
Two questions come to mind for me.
- I wonder how much of this had to do with the Cornhuskers reportedly trying to back out of the game with Oklahoma?
- Though he's signed through 2026, is six wins the minimum for Scott Frost in 2021? He's 12-20 (9-17 B1G) in three seasons, with his best mark being 5-7 (3-6) in 2019. I don't know the last time a P5 program kept a head coach after four consecutive losing seasons to begin his tenure.
In looking at NU's schedule, I don't see 6 wins for them. If Buffalo manages to upset NU in Lincoln, Frost might not make it to October. Of course, I don't know Frost's buyout is, etc. I presume NU gave themselves an "out" in anticipation of this scenario.

If he can't win 6 games with that schedule, he shouldn't be coaching Nebraska.
In addition to being 70, he was also an outsider, with no connection to Nebraska when he was hired.
Given the domestic acrimony we hear about day in and day out, you always have to consider malfeasance...
I must admit "malfeasance" is one of my favorite words....just behind "moist"
What about squirrel? Does he survive?
The Moos is loose!
This you, Bill Moos?
To his point, Scott Frost did outlast Urban Meyer, so....
He'll outlast Harbaugh too.
No he won't... Harbaugh for life! As a disclaimer, I am in the Harbaugh camp. I love what he is doing in trying to turn the program around.
When you go the wrong way but end up at the right place...
Rumor is Scott Frost's mom wasn't a big fan so connect the dots.....
What does that say about Frost?
That they're warming up to him, so he's thawing.
…don’t know what it says re Frost. Minor hat tip Nebraska for admitting a moostake.
After perusing /r/cfb, it sounds like a fit problem with a thick glaze of internal Nebraska drama.
Athletic department sources say Moos wasn’t around the office as much as predecessors Eichorst or Tom Osborne. Moos rarely, if ever went to practices — he said he preferred to stay away — and outside of football, he did not have a reputation for attending many Husker sporting events either. His suite at NU basketball games was not often illuminated. He did not attend the Husker baseball team’s run in Arkansas recently.
“Only in spirit,” Moos said by text. He also sent one of his lieutenants, Garrett Klassy, to the season-finale football game at Rutgers.
Especially during the start of the COVID pandemic, Moos spent large stretches of the summer at his cattle ranch in eastern Washington — Moos would readily admit in interviews where he was or if he was driving through Montana back to Nebraska — instead of North Stadium, where the bulk of the athletic department works. He hired two Senior Deputy A.D.s — John Johnson and Klassy — to handle internal and external departmental work while Moos handled media interviews and made numerous appearances for fans. The department is full of competent employees, one source said, who made things run smoothly on a day-to-day basis. But $150 million operation with hundreds of employees needed final input from a leader.
“Internally, it was a trainwreck,” a source said. “The department ran by itself.”
I suspect this article captures the reason he was canned—he didn't seem to really give a fuck about actually being the AD at Nebraska.
I think I need to work this out myself - would be nice to be able to simply not have to show up and actually, you know, do work expected for the role.
That his direct leader would both hire Moos and allow that to continue does not exactly inspire confidence in that program turning things around.
Yep. He wasn't in the office. Like most every other white-collar worker over the last 15 months.

Speak for yourself. In fact, doublespeak for yourself.
