Musical Confessions (and what're you listening to) During the Quarantine

Submitted by xtramelanin on April 25th, 2020 at 10:29 PM

Mates,

I hate to take away from the speculation about Dear Leader (not that one, the one in N. Korea), but maybe it would be a good time to share some of your musical confessions.  You know, the stuff that may or may not be cool, but that has been playing around your house these days.

For unknown reasons I have been enjoying some Dave Matthews band, live stuff, on youtube when I'm doing other things.  And I have a confession:  one of my sons is pretty partial to country music and we listen to it sometimes when we work out.  It doesn't bug me, and in fact, I've kind of filled him in on some of the older 'classic' country stuff by people like Willie Nelson and Patsy Kline.  That is way old.

Tonight's question is simply this:  What have you been listening to during the lock-down, and of that, what is some of the stuff that you kind of sheepishly look around when you are playing, glad that your cool friends don't know that's on your play list?   Share a link to it if you can so others can easily access it.

Be safe and happy Saturday,

I have to admit I never heard of Volbeat.  I listened and watched the YouTube videos graciously provided and exited seriously impressed!  Those guys are skilled musicians and singers.  The melodies are catchy.  It has sort of an 80's hair metal vibe mixed with 90's alternative.  Anything that makes me tap my foot and swing my head to the beat is good for me.  Very nice and thanks for sharing!

Artists that I've been playing a lot of recently that I don't typically listen to include

+ John Prine

+ Lyle Lovett

+ Iris DeMent

Something about those three voices seem to bring a sense of calm to me.

and playing with john prine, who wiki tells me passed away 2 weeks ago.  sad.

EDIT:  and i figured out who he sounds like.  he sounds like a gravelly jerry jeff walker.

lots of pleasant character.

A Tribe Called Quest. Mainly their latest album: We Got it From Here...every track is unique with great artist.

Elton John. Never listened to him and now, added several songs to my list.

The other: Taylor Swift. Not sure, maybe it’s the beat, but I listen to her songs.

Confession: Two of the first ten CDs I ever owned were Michael Bolton albums.  In fact, they were the same album.

Listening to now: The new Sturgill Simpson album is fun, although the production stinks.  And I have no shame in saying that the Billie Eilish album is fantastic.  I’m thinking my next purchase will either be parcels from the Pink Floyd “Early Years” set or something from the Bob Dylan “Bootleg Series.”

I was in Daytona Beach for High School for Spring Break with buddies.  We wanted to buy new swim suits so we could look a bit more current than the suits we had from Michigan.

The guy in the beach shop said every swim suit purchase included a free Beach Boys ticket.   We were sold and spent the day celebrating our good fortune only to find out when we got to the show that admission was free of charge.

The Hamilton Soundtrack. I used to hate musicals/theatre but Hamilton has changed my perspective. The musical is amazing and the soundtrack is awesome.  I find myself even using some of the tracks as pump up songs before/during a workout.

I've been listening to some darker and depressing music during this pandemic. Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss, Zeppelin - in my time of dying, Pantera - cemetery gates, Matellica - One, Mega Death - symphony of destruction, Ozzie - no more tears. Just to name a few. Though they all have good lead guitar riffs.

Dylan wrote this song in '62 but I like Zep version much better. It was not  played much on the radio, since it was too long. I first heard this song when I purchased the album Physical Graffiti in '75 when I turned 12. The most popular song seem to be The Rover, which was good and played a lot on the radio, WRIF 101 or CKLW 800 AM.

Blind Willie Johnson is incredible.  He also first recorded "Nobody's Fault But Mine" which Zeppelin covered.  His song "Jesus is Coming Soon" is about the 1918 flu epidemic (sample lyric: "great disease was mighty and the people were sick everywhere. It was an epidemic, it floated through the air").

His song "Dark Was the Night, Cold was the Ground" is one of the spookiest songs I've ever heard; just a bunch of slide guitar and weird moaning.  And what does that title mean?

To answer the OP's question about sheepishness, the song "Carrie Anne" by The Hollies has been going through my head for a week and a half and I don't have any idea why.

One or four points about that tune:

1. The title was taken from a VERY old spiritual about Christ’s death.

2. The song allegedly was just Blind Willie playing while he thought about Christ on the cross.  It was essentially just him emoting his sadness.

3. That song is in space.  It was put on the gold record that was shot into space in the 70s.

4. In the “House of Cards” episode where Frank goes to tell Freddie that he can’t be associated with him anymore on account of his son, Frank sees a poster of Blind Willie Johnson and says “‘Dark Was the Night’ gets me every time.”  Freddie then shows him an original 78 pressing of the song from the 20s (which if he actually had, he definitely could have bailed his son out of jail WITHOUT having to sell his restaurant).
