Multi-banner raising season for Michigan Basketball

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Was having a discussion today about our season and tried to think when the last time multiple banners would be raised at Crisler for one season.

It hasn't happened often. Some elite company.

Take a look-

1964 Big Ten Champions
1964 NCAA Mideast Regional Champions

1965 Big Ten Champions
1965 NCAA Mideast Regional Champions

1989 NCAA Southeast Regional Champions
1989 NCAA National Champions

2018 B1G Tournament Champions
2018 NCAA West Regional Champions

Those are the only four teams in program history who have won multiple championships in a season.

A historical oddity: we almost never win the Big Ten (regular season) and reach the Final Four in the same year.  The last time we did both was in 1965.  It's strange.

If that damn ball just fell in in 2013 or we made our free throws against Indiana we would've had another one. That game still bothers me still to this day.

Also regarding the lack of Final Fours in B1G Championship seasons post-1965, here's how each of the teams fared in the tournament that won the B1G-

1966- Elite Eight
1974- Elite Eight
1977- Elite Eight
1985- Round of 32
1986- Round of 32
2012- Round of 64
2014- Elite Eight

Yes, that loss still sticks in my craw a bit.

There's no guarantee that we make the Final Four if we win that game, though.  We'd have been a higher seed (#3 or even #2) and who knows, maybe we draw a tougher region.

1. Big Ten regular season championship

2. Big Ten conference tournament championship

3. Final Four + National Championship

All 3 in the same season would be a program first.

So will they do 2 banner raising ceromonies on 2 differnt days or will they do it during the same game? Seems like it would make more sense for 2 games to maybe help with attendance against lesser opponents that otherwise would not sellout

At once and I only say that because Beilein will win his 800th game in the season opener against Random School Name here. I think it would be special to have him see both banners go up and then celebrate that milestone after the game as well.

Once in the Final Four (8 total appearances), Michigan has an excellent track record of getting to the championship game (7-1 in the semis; only failing to progress on its first attempt in '64) but a poor record (1-6) in the championship itself. I suspect that both of those rates are meaningful outliers nationwide.

We've drawn tough opponents in those games:

1965 UCLA

1976 Indiana

1989 Seton Hall

1992 Duke

1993 UNC

2013 Louisville

2018 Villanova

Only Seton Hall was not a #1 seed.  Several of these were the #1 overall team coming in.  We were a decided underdog in four of the seven matchups (UCLA, IU, Duke, Nova).  Still a bit disappointing to only have the one win though.

NCAA West Regional Champions?  I remember the Fab Five banners said, "NCAA Finalists."  Do we do it differently now?

Yeah.  Whenever it was that they replaced the hand-sewn banners with the more modern-looking ones, they put "FINAL FOUR" on them.

I remember we also had at least one "AP #1" banner - 1977, I believe.  I don't think it's still around.

One minor quibble:

The Big Ten Tournament did not exist before 1998. Raising multiple banners before 1998 was much harder to do without the Big Ten Tournament.

I am still stunned how far this program has come in 10 years.

This is nice to read. I know it was a hell of a season, overachieving many would say. Lots to celebrate, but I am still having a hard time accepting the season is over, and that we didn't win on Monday night. Just really missing Michigan hoops right now, and just wish the game would have gone our way. Ugh. I guess that is life.

Has anyone played in more championship games than the five Michigan has played in dating back to 1989?

Well, DERP--besides Duke and Norf Carolina
