MSU special teams

Submitted by Farnn on

Early in the season, MSU seemed to really struggle with special teams, giving up a 100 yard kick return against WMU, a 49 yard kick return vs Oregon, and a 81 yard punt return vs Oregon.  Since then they haven't given up any big returns but I would think special teams would be more of a story going into the game considering how well Michigan has done in that department so far.

Unfortunately, advanced ST stats don't come out until after this week, but Michigan should have a major advantage in that phase of the game.  Would be great for the punt/kick block to finally get home or for Peppers to finally take one to the house.

It's because Special Ed's your idol, the highest title, and numero uno.  Also, he's kinda young, but his tongue speaks maturity.  He's not a child -- he don't need nothing for security.  There's much more I could add here, but maybe later cause my waiter made potato & alligator souffle`.  To put it short, he's got it made -- so it's basically the opposite of Sparty.

Don't need advanced to know they are bad - their punt teams esp are bottom 10 in the country each.

that is actually kind of stunning.  It could be flukish and kind of circumstantial if 1 or 2 of those rankings were that bad but that is flat-out failing report card.

Why do I get the feeling that they are going to play their game of the year?

I think he'll have a good chance Saturday. Mike Wilson from Sparty's 247 page did a Q&A on Michigan's board yesterday and said their punter has a very strong leg, but also tends to outkick the coverage leaving a lot of room for the returner to make a play. Also said he's not very consistent and has shanked a few.

awful is a strong word there when the biggest issues aren't anything a ST coach can control. We've had bad snaps, missed FGs, dropped snaps on punts, shanked punts. all things I don't put on a coach. We have also allowed 3-4 really big returns, which can be placed on him though

Their FG kicking game has been pretty rough too, 5-9 on the season, with one banking in off the uprights. All his misses are from inside 40, and one inside 30, so it's not like it's just from attempting long kicks.

Assuming we do not turn the ball over, and Peppers has done some crazy stuff on punt returns this season, our ST should give us a significant field position advantage in this game.

My fantasy is that dantonio calls a cheeky fake FG pass early in the game that gets picked off and run back for a TD. It's not going to happen but I would relish how demoralizing that would be for staee.

He called that play at an extremely risky down and distance, 4th and 13, if I recall, rather than go for a tying fieldgoal from 46 in overtime.   And there should have been a delay of game called to boot.  Just the start of Sparty's way too lucky run under Dantonio.  I may very well lose my mind if they pull something like that off this weekend.
