MSU Game 10/30 - Night Game Possible?

Submitted by Michigan Philosophy on October 4th, 2021 at 1:47 PM

So I am sure I am not the only one with plans Saturday night Halloween weekend. Is it possible we have to play this at night? I'm really hoping we don't as it will screw up my plans. I've seen there are weird rules about when we can or can't just curious if this could be a night game.

Looking ahead, if everything keeps going well for both teams it would certainly be a compelling TV matchup. Are there any other potential matchups TV would prefer? I'm just trying to convince myself that one of the biggest games of the year isn't going to totally screw plans I've had for months lol

Noon or 7:30 is my hope.  If it's at 3:30, I'm missing the ending while trick or treating with my son.  Would have to sneak a headphone into one ear under my costume if that's the case.  I'd rather not.

IF both UM and MSU enter the in-state rivalry game undefeated, it'll likely be a top-10 match up and I have to think it'll at least get a 03:30pm start time. Could be possible for two B1G top-10 match ups that weekend, which I can't recall the last time that happened.

Side note: I'm not sure if anyone can beat Bama or UGA this year but nobody, not even in their own conference, has a better ability to do that than the top 3-4 B1G teams.

UM/MSU has been the Big Noon game on FOX the past three years, so if they end up with the broadcast rights I'd expect it to be another nooner. It won't be a FOX night affair because they have a World Series game that evening.

Pretty much comes down to the records of UM/MSU and OSU/PSU and who gets first pick between FOX and ESPN/ABC. If it's FOX, no night game. ESPN/ABC, I'd say there's a chance it's at night.

One last thing: IIRC, when a network wants to make an in-season night game designation, they have to make that pick in the 12-day window, so we'll know by Oct 18th if it's at night or not.

Other plans?  I guess it's fair, since just last year there was NO football played on Halloween weekend (that's my story and I'm sticking to it).  Last I checked, however, Halloween falls squarely during the portion of the calendar known as "football season" and therefore any Saturday plans run the risk of conflicting.  Fortunately we live in the era of flying cars and DVRs, so you can at least record a game when emergencies like weddings, births of your children, trips to the vet, or youth sports schedules arise.  The older I get, the healthier I realize it is to allow those "life events" to fill the calendar first, and then add in the sporting contests between 18-23 year olds I don't know personally.

MSU AD has always been super strict about not letting tailgate lots open until 5 hours before kickoff and in general has a lot of restrictions in place compared with U-M as the result of EL getting way too rowdy after night games and a full day of tailgating. I don’t think they’ll want that to be a night game.

Nah, Fox likes their best game at noon.  It's a very uncompelling week outside of the conference. I bet Big Noon Kickoff in EL on Fox and OSU/PSU at night on ABC.

I am really hoping it is not at night. We are hosting a Halloween party and while we could have the game on certainly we are hoping to be able to catch it earlier in the day and then focus on the party / other football. I am personally rooting that it will be the Big Noon game.

A few thoughts:

  • FOX and ESPN/ABC have an equal number of weeks in the season where they have "first draft pick."  However, it strongly appears FOX had the bulk of the first picks thus far.  It is not public knowledge as to who has what week, but it is more likely that ESPN/ABC will have first pick on October 30th than FOX.
  • Whatever B1G game FOX does get, be it with the first or second pick, will be a good one.  U-M @ MSU and PSU @ OSU are always good games from a TV POV.  Given FOX has the World Series, I wouldn't be shocked if they put their B1G game at 3:30 as a lead-in and put a Big XII game (e.g., something like Texas @ Baylor) at Noon.  They've used this World Series lead-in strategy before, including in 2017.
  • ABC is required to show a Pac-12 Saturday night game at least once during the season.  Given the World Series, this may be a week for them to "burn" that game - take the L rating wise but get the requirement out of the way.
  • 2 other B1G games are already pre-scheduled for Noon.  Iowa @ Wisconsin and Indiana @ Maryland.  The former seems like an ESPN/FS1 type of game, the latter a BTN type game.

My very premature guess is one of U-M @ MSU/PSU @ OSU is broadcast at Noon on ABC.  The either at 3:30 on FOX.  ABC with first pick, but too early to say what game they'll take.

Woof. This is a rough week to go in that direction.

Colo at ORE*

WSU at ASU*

Arizona at USC

UCLA at Utah

O State at Cal

Wash at Stan

Obviously things can change in a month's time, but there's not a lot of great "natural" options for that week and a primetime Pac12 game.

I was just looking at the same thing. If they wanted to stay with ranked teams, that limits them to ASU and Oregon (assuming they are still ranked by then).

WSU is 2-3 and CU is 1-4, so not great matchups by any stretch.

Surprisingly, OSU(ntosu) is 4-1, having beaten USC and UW. If they can manage to beat mediocre WSU and Utah teams, they could theoretically be ranked by then also - although their opponent is a pretty terrible Cal team.

Others have explained all the reasons why MSU and U-M will be against having a night game, and why the networks also do not appear to be inclined to have it as the late start as well. The World Series game 4 is a lucky break, as it essentially forces the big football games to the day to avoid a TV conflict. Worst case, for planning purposes, is the six-day hold, which means the times won't be decided until the Monday prior to the game - 10/25 for the 10/30 weekend. At least that guarantees it'll be either 12 or 3:30/4, and not a night game.

I think it's somewhat likely that Northwestern @ Michigan on 10/23 is a night game, as the BTN will want to make a big deal of the George Jewett Trophy they're starting for our once-every-three-years "rivalry" with Northwestern. It seems like a perfect BTN primetime game - not enough juice for a national audience (especially with Northwestern so bad) but of special interest for fans within the conference.

Michigan has only had one night game at home, plus this weekend @Nebraska. They may agree to one more at home in the hope that keeps @MSU, @Indiana or @PSU from being scheduled at night. This assumes that the "tolerances" discussed in the article JMo linked above is only 3 for Michigan.

You just have to choose what is more important to you. However, there really is no reason you can't DVR the game . . .

  • Go out for your event, presumably at 6 or 7pm?
  • Leave a bit early, say at 8 or 8:30pm?
  • Maintain radio silence.
  • Watch the game, beginning around 9pm, skipping through interminable commercials.
  • You should be done around 11pm.

There are some bad posts… then there’s this.  No one cares about your plans, if you care about watching a specific game so much that it causes to post here to complain about game times, maybe you shouldn’t have made plans to begin with.

I believe both Michigan and Michigan State have fulfilled their night game obligation however that doesn't prevent the Big Ten Channel from choosing them again.

Iowa is playing at Wisconsin, which is already slotted for Noon.  Penn State plays at Ohio State and I'd guess that gets the ABC night slot, so M/MSU "should" get the 3:30 kick

IF OSU/PSU gets 3:30 slot, BTN might take M/MSU for their prime time slot.

Not a chance, MSU just played back to back home night games, and away at Northwestern.

100% Not going to schedule another at home.  Logistic nightmare for the AD.
